New Infrastructure Deal Mandates Anti-DWI Tech Be Installed In All New Cars
Thought this was interesting. I'd never heard anyone mention this part of the bill.

The $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill President Biden will sign into law on Monday includes a provision that will require automakers to install an anti-drunk driving system into all new cars.

The mandate falls under the section of the bill that provides $17 billion to road safety programs. Under the timeline laid out by the bill, the mandate could go into effect as soon as 2025.

“To ensure the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger motor vehicles,” the bill says in summing up the findings of Congressional research.

“Not later than 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall issue a final rule prescribing a Federal motor vehicle safety standard … that requires passenger motor vehicles manufactured after the effective date of that standard to be equipped with advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology,” according to the provision buried in the massive bill.

I've seen it brought up and a lot of people are pissed about this, rightfully so. In essence, it will be additional expensive and faulty tech that will cost everyone more to single out a few bad apples. Imagine paying more for a new car that has this mandated and then you try to start it, but the sensors screwed up and you can't drive your car because it "thinks" you're drunk.

Drunk drivers are a menace, but this is not the way to go about dealing with them.

Yup. Seems like just one more thing that can go wrong---and likely be expensive to repair.

Extra cost and I'm sure there's a censor in it and if it goes out without warning your vehicle is rendered useless.

Well... I remember when your car wouldn't start without the seatbelt fastened. Do you?

I remember people fastening them behind their seats.

I remember people asking the dealership how to disable them.

I remember a lot of them quit working shortly after they visited their dealership.

I remember the regulation being changed.

Y'all remember?

30 years ago I was charged with a dui and had to have a monitor installed in my truck. You had to blow into it to start it and every 5 minutes blow into it again to keep the vehicle running.

I learned that mouthwash would set it off but I could drink 2 beers and the truck would start.

That’s funny. I don’t remember that period. I guess I never owned a model that did that. I do remember some cars having mechanized seatbelts that automatically strapped across your body when you started the car. You still had to buckle them manually. I had an early 1990’s Nissan 240ZX that did that.

Its not really specific. Ive wondered for years if DWI goes away if self driving cars become the norm.

@lmmfao

It will be implemented by means of a rectal probe to also monitor all health vitals and preclude the need for those pesky jab mandates.

For the good of the community komrade.

Or better,

Can we require the self driver car to blow our “detectors”?

Maybe, just maybe that would be a value added.

To whit:

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Ben Effin Franklin, yet again.

Some you leftist dopes should soak that one in.

Y’all starting to figure this out yet?

The thing is that we get way too many people get drunk or high, get behind the wheel, kills someone, goes to jail, then gets out to repeat the cycle. It costs us more with court costs and all that.

Yep, it's one of Pete Buttichug's pet policies. Someone, I can't remember if it was him or Spongebrain, said they are not going to do this. Translation: we are going to do this.
