Sounded like Swann had a possibility of replacing Sroba as the punt returner at the beginning of the season. Our punt return game has to be near the bottom of the CAA/NCAA.

It seems that Cignetti is comfortable with Sroba fair catching the football almost every time. Guess there aren't any other athletes on the team (e.g., Thornton or Vanhorse among others) who Cignetti or the special teams coach (who IMO hasn't done much to improve specifically our return teams performances on game day) feel comfortable enough putting back there and letting them return a punt from time to time. You would think Thornton could fair catch a punt as well as Sroba does.

Not sure if any of you noticed like I did last week when we hosted Campbell that Cignetti was lining Sroba up on the sidelines when we would initially set up for a punt return. Seems like our HC is alot more hands on with the punt return team than some of us thought or maybe think he should be.

To be honest I don't think the current coaching staff got enough out of Amos his last year at JMU when we were making a run at the FCS Championship before he decided with COVID-19 to transfer to UVA for the 2020 Season.

As an aside let's face it, our ST Coach hasn't had to do much to improve Ratke's accuraccy, Harry's distance or Connor Madden/Camden Wise's kickoffs. Connor Madden was booming kicks out of the end zone at Bridgewater which is why he transferred to JMU.

Yes, and I also dislike they took the run option away from Harry. It caused other teams to spend time focusing on Harry, and less attention on their returns. He was a real weapon for us for us a few years ago.

I was excited about the resume of the ST's coach Cig brought in, but must admit the special teams have seemed to decline the last few years.

If we convert two or three of our red zone FGs into TDs the final score would have been 40-22 or 43-22 which IMO would look better to the selection committee when the pick the top 8 seeds this coming Sunday.

I think at best with the lack of quality CAA wins unless we blow out Towson in our final regular season home game by 40+ points, we're destined for the #4 seed if Montana State and NDSU win their regular season finales.

I guess the question for my fellow board posters is would you rather JMU travel to Huntsville, Texas for a semifinal rematch (if we advance that far) against Sam Houston or travel to Bozeman, Montana for a match up in who knows what kind of weather against the Bobcats?

I’d be happier if he fair caught every punt. His lack of play making is one thing I can live with if the team doesn’t have another set of reliable hands. But his failure to catch punts in the air kills field position repeatedly. It happened in the Spring season and continues in the Fall. We might as well line up 11 guys and try to block every punt with no returner. Same effect as the ball rolls for extra yards.

Bozeman for sure. I bet they actually believe in freedom and won’t sh!t bricks when we throw crepe paper to celebrate scores. Unlike Huntsville Texas where they employ security disguised as police officers to remove only opposing fans who throw streamers. Got beer aggressively thrown on me. Nothing. Pretended to throw a streamer. Dear Jesus, they were nearly on top of me.

RE: Week 11 - JMU @ W&M - 3:30p - Roll call and such
Not really sure where to put but I guess this is as good as anywhere:

Teams with >50 redzone attempts:
JMU 23 TDs out of 50: 46%
Southeast LA 48/61: 79%
EWU 44/60: 73%
Samford 34/50: 68%
VMI 31/50: 62%

Top 5 teams:
SHSU 30/40: 75%
Montana St 22/34: 65%
NDSU 25/39: 64%
Nova 27/40: 75%

Others:
Holy Cross: 34/39: 87%
Cen. Ark 36/43: 84%

Ouch

EDIT: Realized I could just copy and paste into excel and run some calcs and throw it on imgur.

JMU is ranked 113th in FCS in TDs per redzone attempt (46.0%). Looking at CAA (teams going against common defenses) and we are second to last with UNH being 119th at 43.3% and Towson first at 71.0%.

No surprise that we fair much better (20th nationally) if you go with scoring drives per attempt (88.0%).

DOUBLE EDIT: F'CK the image, I cant get it to work, much like our redzone offense

Not that I think Cole is getting drafted, but those links at bunk. The last one has Rattler still rated as top QB.
You can argue the order between now and the upcoming draft, but those listed are in the conversation. They show anywhere from 8-46 QBs for the upcoming draft, and CJ is nowhere in there. I posted them because they were the first three I could find, I couldn’t find any showing CJ getting drafted. Maybe somebody can provide links to draft rankings that have CJ anywhere near where he would be expected to be drafted.

Hart, I agree with your point about Sroba just fair catching punts. That's all the Cowboys used Cole Beasley for before he became a FA.

If we were to put 11 men on the line and try to punt block on every 4th down our opponent decides to punt I'm not sure how successful we'd be. Our special teams have been a concern under Cignetti not that they were a strong suit for Houston and his staff in 2018.

If you asked me the coach who had the brightest future and had done the most on the current staff it would be Corey Hetherman. He may be the common denominator for success at Maine and JMU. I love his aggressive style on defense. Think he's in his late 30's. I hope we don't lose him before we begin full time in the Sunbelt.

The only thing I can't figure is how he could not adjust the defense to stop Trey Lance. Other than that he's been amazing.

Perhaps the best defensive coach we've had since Withers. 03-lmfao Barlow and Trott were quite good as well, but I'd probably take Hetherman over the others.

Of course I didn't think Brandon Staley was a good DC for JMU, and 7 or 8 years later he's a NFL head coach. Go figure. 03-lmfao

Pretty much sure that Withers was behind the D that year and did not let Brandon run his stuff. Other than that one year his defenses were consistently great. Only year he was not good was with Withers which tells you everything you need to know.

Likely played a role in Staley returning to DIII John Carroll after just one year at JMU.

Pretty damning info when it comes to red zone effectiveness when we're not relying upon our what I would say is our AA kicker Triple D. If red zone TD efficiency doesn't improve against Towson and in the 2nd Round of the playoffs, our last go round in the FCS Playoffs will be short lived.

That mindset has to change as we move into FBS. Special teams can win you games or lose them. Cignetti is way too conservative at times for my liking and others especially when it comes to STs.

I agree with you on Amos. I believe Roy Tesh was our ST coach in '17 and '18. (I think he had a position duty as well). Whatever scheme he was using with Amos on punt returns worked extremely well. I believe I read somewhere that Jimmy Moreland helped Amos pick his routes by leading him. Maybe w/ Jimmy gone, it effected Amos's numbers? His numbers were still very good, just not as game changing as they had been.
Amos 2017: 18 punt returns for 284 yards and a touchdown, 15.8 average
Amos 2018: 25 punt returns for 549 yards and 3 touchdowns, 22.0 average
Amos 2019: 33 punt returns for 426 yards and a touchdown, 12.9 average

Cheek absolutely deserves to be on the list.
As for Cole, I think he deserves a chance, but I understand him not being on the list.
I think the playoffs for him could really help his chances. If we make a long playoff run, I think it's going to have a lot to do with Cole's performance.

Texas Tech’s radio broadcasters just got suspended one game for ripping into the officials and listing their full names after doing so… Hmm… where have I seen that before?

So they "doxed" the referees who are listed by full name in the box score anyway? Makes little sense, here's who refereed our WM game:

Referee: Boyd,W. Todd
Line Judge: Shober,Robert
Side Judge: Burrell,Duane
Umpire: Toliver,Elton
Back Judge: Gallagher,Tim
Score Keeper:
Linesman: Snyder,Mike
Field Judge: Garcia,Jose
