I agree. We should be overjoyed with a .500 record against FBS teams.

It's called a transition for a reason. What a freakin' homerun that would be to jump straight into that level of competition. You have to think about it from a recruiting standpoint too. It's one thing to talk about being FBS, it's another thing to have numerous opportunities to show recruits FBS level football in person. I really hope this smoke turns into fire.

With the availability of the transfer portal there is no reason why we could not go out and pick up some good players that would allow us to add enough ready made depth to be competitive with that schedule next year. Prior to the TP it would be very difficult as Freshman would not be ready, but now you can get enough in the portal while bringing in Frosh to make it work.

To make the above work I do think we need bring in a transfer QB for next year even if we think Atkins or the recruit will ultimately be a good QB1 at that level.

How would we compete in the SBC this current year? Haven't we already set all of our schedules even through baseball and softball in the spring?

Good point on the TP. And to be clear, I'm not saying we are going to get our asses kicked in every game, I just think its more likely we lose more than we win in year 1. I think most, if not all, will be competitive games and I cannot wait!

Yeah. If this becomes a reality and it's 10 FBS with 2 FCS, a .500 season in the first transition year would actually be huge. With that being said, some will still call for cignetti's head if he loses more than 2 games next year.

I think it was suggested by a poster that we could use the 12th game to schedule a H-H series with another G5 program (this with the assumption we're locked into our P5, 2 FCS powder puffs and an 8 game SBC slate). That 12th game could be another FCS.

My guess would be for some minor sports that the SBC would allow our teams/athletes a chance to compete in their conference tournament. Not sure what sports those would be or how it would work, but I think that is what is being discussed. I would think it would be sports like golf and tennis that we are talking about.

There's no reason to buy out our current 2 FCS scheduled, and then we have Louisville already announced. With an 8 game SBC schedule, there's one 1 game left. It could be an FCS, it could be an FBS. Who knows.

This is a 9 or 10 FBS schedule if it ends up happening and we don't cancel currently scheduled games, which I don't know why we would.

Agree I think you keep those games we're locked into for the next two seasons (why pay a buyout if you don't have to). Frankly I'm cool with a 3rd FCS next year and then target a 10th FBS in 2023 to help 'ease in' the difficulty (unless it is UMASS then we have an extra 'bye week' playing them)

That would be a tremendous gesture by the SBC. Absolutely love how they are working to accelerate this as much as possible, and an SBC football schedule in 22 would be great.

Would absolutely love it if we could somehow rip up CAA schedules and exit sooner this Spring for some sports. If the CAA doesn't want to treat us as equals for postseason, why play them at all?

I double checked his twitter follows and its still mostly ODU coaches and 4 JMU accounts and some oneoffs at VT, South Carolina, and others.

Any QB that can throw a good enough deep ball to keep a defense honest should have our offense FBS ready with our RB depth. I'm sure the coaches are keeping an eye on potential transfers to give Atkins another year or two of development (and a redshirt year if that falls thru over the next 5 games).

The Louisville game will be interesting with QB Malik Cunningham most likely returning as a redshirt senior.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2022-2028)
Gill has said in an interview that the SBC is working with JMU to shorten the transition period. Since the NCAA keeps their teeth in a glass on a nightstand lately, I think a full SBC football schedule in 2022 is a real possibility. Cignetti said in the press luncheon yesterday, that Percy and a lot of the seniors that will be honored on Sat. will be returning. They just want to be honored on Senior Day with their other classmates. Some candidates are Wesley McCormick, Wayne Davis, Liam Fornadel, Bryce Carter, Bracey, Ross, Hampton, Greene, Ratke etc. Cig also said he thinks we will have a mostly FBS schedule next year. With a full recruiting class this year and a couple or more transfers we will be at full strength (85 scholarships) for 2022. Given that our current O-line and D-line have plenty of youth, QB is the only position that doesn't have significant game experience. Recruiting classes will be adequately spread out for continuity in subsequent years. If we cannot get a major QB transfer, I am fine going with Atkins as the starter. Four years with the same QB, if he is as talented as Cig says, would be a big positive.
We may just be experiencing the perfect storm to jump right into FBS and be ready to really compete next year. If it all comes true, how sweet it is.

RE: Future FB Schedule (2022-2028)
Watching Atkins throw on the sidelines before games and at the half, his arm is loaded. He throws a tight spiral and his passes are heavy with some zip. Watching him side by side with CJ, Cole's passes seem to be more floaty for 30 yards while Atkins were cutting through the air like a dart.

While there is a lot more to making a good QB (including experience, reading the defense, scrambling, etc.) than just throwing a good ball, from the mechanics and flight of the ball he could have as good as an arm as we've seen in the last few decades.
