It was always going to be tough on whomever followed Beamer at that job .... He'll land on his feet somewhere .... Probably another G5 job then maybe turn that into another P5 shot ....

How much time did they give Frank Beamer to start producing winners? Did they give Fuente that much time?

Funny you should say that. He had six losing seasons (the same amount of seasons Fuente has had), but got his seventh year and turned it around.

Quote:As a result of the violations uncovered under Dooley's watch, the Hokies were limited to 85 total scholarships in 1988 and 1989, and 17 initial scholarships in 1989. The sanctions hampered the Hokies, and Beamer went a combined 5–17 in 1987 and 1988. Beamer's record in his first six seasons was 24-40-2, a win percentage of .385. After the team went 2–8–1 in 1992, athletic director Dave Braine believed in Beamer and thought he deserved more time. It proved to be a wise decision; the Hokies would not suffer another losing season under Beamer's watch. At his hall of fame induction, Beamer said he would have been unlikely to survive his early years had he been coaching in the 2010s.

How many guys do you know who work their way up to that nice P5 job. Then fail. Then drop back down and find similar success the second time around?
I guess Kiffin and Freeze are examples.
Any others?
It just seems to be tough to get the magic back after you've lost it.

I don't think I'd lump in Freeze with Fuente and Kiffin. Freeze didn't get fired for losing too many football games.

Sabin and Bellicheck were coaching the Cleveland Browns the last season before moving to Baltimore. Both Sabin as DC while Bill was head coach both were fired.

Agreed...

Freeze was fired for "reasons"

Kiffin was fired for being an *******.

Agree. And Kiffin actually never worked his way up to begin with, so another bad example.

I just can't think of a good example of...
Someone with success at G5 who leverages that into a P5 gig...
Ultimately fails at P5...
Goes back to G5 (any G5, let alone a return to a previous stop)...
And has the same type success at the G5 the second time around.

Petrino, Butchie Jones, Tuberville all come to mind. Les Miles too - as Kansas would be a very bad G5 team. Tommy West doesn't fit because he never had G5 success prior to Clemson.

doing not so well this year...but I have a name for you... Skip Holtz.
Took South Florida job when they were in the Big East and flunked miserably there.
Up until the last 2 seasons was doing ok at Loisiana Tech.

Pros are a different story.
Some of the best college coaches of my life have been fired (or had rough tenures) in the pros.
Saban
Urban Meyer
Pete Carroll
then there's
Pitino
Calipari
Brad Stevens

also...Sonny Dykes at SMU.
Had brought Louisiana Tech to respectability, bombed at California, and is doing well at SMU.

That's a key ingredient to my theory. G5 success -> P5 failure -> G5 success.

EDIT: You're counting USF as P5. Maybe, as they were BCS. But seems a stretch. Certainly not a traditional P5.
