RE: VT HC Fuente out, JC Price named interim
I was really hoping they wouldn't fire him so they would keep losing.
Their stock has plummeted since Beamer left, yet they still see themselves as elite.
I am going to bet they are going to go after a big name and try to lure him in with big money.
But here's the thing: who are they going to get? I'm not sure a big name will go there. I am also not worried about Cignetti going there as that would infuriate their donors.
I hope they reach for another unproven guy and continue to lose. They need to be humbled.

VT Massey Ratings and records
2021: #62 (5-5)
2020: #62 (5-6)
2019: #52 (8-5)
2018: #65 (6-7)
2017: #20 (9-4)
2016: #16 (10-4)
2015: #45 (7-6)
2014: #42 (7-6)
2013: #48 (8-5)
2012: #53 (7-6)
2011: #26 (11-3)
2010: #12 (11-3) (HA!)
2009: #6 (10-3)
2008: #25 (10-4)
2007: #12 (11-3)

In the past decade they've had 2 good seasons. Their fans are just delusional in thinking they should still be up in the top 15 every year. They still think they are a program that should be in the top 25 every year, but should they be? I just don't think they're a program that will be there every single year. And with other area schools moving up (and UVA being competitive again), even if they're not losing top recruits, they're certainly losing their depth guys.

They are the new East Carolina. It won't be long before we surpass their ass.

Surprised to see Cignetti being passed around, I will put the odds of VT even entertaining hiring an FCS HC at 0%.

There is no consensus amongst VT donors as to where they should go next but if they aren't careful they could enter a UT-type coaching turnstile over the next 15 years.

They've never been elite. Beamer ball was play a bunch of patsy teams, rank up high, and drop the big games. Wash, rinse, repeat, year after year. There will always be an up and coming coach from a G5 conference willing to take the job. If they do well, they'll leave. If not, fired.

Absolutely agree. They were the team to come to mind when I saw Fuentes fired. Their donors are going to get in the way and will lead to some poor hiring decisions based purely on name and not results.
I would love nothing more than to pass them. If they continue to make Fuentes-type hires, we will.

RE: VT HC Fuente out, JC Price named interim
I think in a dream scenario they would take Shane Beamer but I don't think there is any amount of home cooking that would get him to leave SC after just one year. I would assume they would make a run at Clawson. Wake Forest may have to ante up to keep him around. I am too lazy to go look it up, but there was an article earlier this year (think it was in the athletic) where they interviewed a lot of Virginia high school coaches and none seemed pleased with how Fuente and his team acted towards them. Whoever takes this job has some work to do to repair recruiting relationships, especially in the 757.

Not sure I can say that yet, but they are approaching that territory. They need a few more hires before I can put them there. They still have a strong following and haven't had any ECU numbered seasons.
They are delusional in thinking they belong in the upper echelon of FBS because they remember the good 'ole days.

VT donors are going to have to step up and/or Babcock needs to allocate more money to the program. If you go look at the assistant coach salary pool they gave Fue, its not real hard to see why there were some struggles. For those not aware, the OC + DC salaries are a COMBINED less than $1 million. For a team that wants to be competitive for P5 championships that is insanely low. If they want to lure a big name this year, that number has to at least double.

For comparison, UGA pays their OL coach $1 million. The leap from the middle-of-the-pack P5 to the top tier P5 budgets is huge.

They need a proven winner from the FBS level to fix MULTIPLE areas in that program. #1 has to be repairing the damage done to in state recruiting.

My guess is Clawson, Napier, and Chadwell....in that order.

I think you are right on the first two, I'd wait another year or so on Chadwell. I think he needs to show he can win without McCall. I think the lost last week further emphasized that. With as many jobs open (and ones to become open in the next month) he may still find a landing spot somewhere but I don't think VT wants to take the risk.

The current buzz is they may also take a look at Mike Elko and other high profile OC/DCs at big P5 programs. Recruiting has changed drastically over the last 3 years, finding an HC that can navigate the portal, recruiting, NIL, etc is of utmost importance.

I think Tech needs a guy who has an entrepreneurial spirit that has had many P5 stops, likes small college towns, can recruit like hell and knows a thing or two about destroying in-state recruiting relationships, and can coach a sound defense.

It’s quite obvious they need Everett Withers who can rally the Beta Turkeys to bring VT football back to the heights of Beamer.

Totally agree, although they've been especially bad with Fuente so I always hoped to see him stick around as long as possible.
