RE: Week 11 - JMU @ W&M - 3:30p - Roll call and such
Enjoyed the day too. A couple snide comments from W&M fans about us making the wrong decision going FBS but overall their fans were nice.

Fun loud JMU crowd always helps things. Noise made a difference when the game got close. Good to beat London again too. He still shakes his head when asked about Scotty McGee.

That cannon going off the first time scared the heck out of me and everyone around us. Basically every time it went off. Loudest cannon ever. They were shooting it off at random times and just laughing at our fans’ reactions. I wonder if that was just for military appreciation day. Don’t remember that in the past, and I think I would remember it.

I made the same comment yesterday. We have to fix this crap of dominating teams, only to let them clobber us in the fourth quarter while we fight not to lose. Shades of Sammy last year. If we can't fix this, I'm afraid it is going to be Sammy all over again.

I want to see us leave FCS with one more triumph in Frisco. I don't see it happening if we can't fix this. DC needs to be all over this!

Count me as a fan of Cole Johnson, who is somewhat polarizing on these boards, but held in high esteem by others on the outside. He missed a few throws yesterday and made a couple of bad throws into tight coverage, but also made some brilliant throws and is the single most indespensible player on this 9-1 team. He was under duress much of the time while passing and there was no consistent running game. He also took a dirty, brutal hit, of course. His receivers, I thought, didn't help him at times with several drops (thought I counted 4 or so, including one to Wells in the end zone that would have been a touchdown). Replays were often hard to find, though, and game looks different in person than on the screen.

I was astonished at the collapse of JMU's defense after dominating completely through roughly three quarters. Don't know if they became disinterested or W&M was able to get behind the JMU defense because so many were in the box, leading to three big plays for scores.

This team has answered the bell, winning on the road consistently throughout the season. They should finish at 10-1 with a bye and we'll see what happens going forward. The important thing is they usually find a way to win, even if it isn't in dominating fashion or always pretty.

I agree. I have been praising Cole all year. Extremely good and accurate passer, even with the long ball. He is a great decision-maker, is more mobile than he is given credit for, and takes very good care of the ball.

Call me crazy, but I see Cole as a potential late-round pick like DiNucci, possibly higher. At least an undrafted free agent, but I think he gets drafted. He possesses more of the NFL-profile measurables than Nooch. He reminds me a lot of Joe Flacco, but more mobile.

i agree he should run more...but it's really really tough to say he is a good passer beyond 20 yards. his touch is pretty off on fades (occasionally perfect), deep routes are suspect with wide open receivers having to adjust, and too many short balls require acrobatics by the WRs.

i'm thrilled with his leadership this year, good decisions, and do wish he'd run even more - but NFL is really not gonna happen - happy to eat crow and make a $50 duke club donation if i'm wrong and he is drafted!

I agree CJ will get a look from the pros. Maybe even get drafted. I like CJ too, and hope he can prove all the doubters wrong and steer the Dukes to a NC. But Flacco? No.

Flacco was 25-30 pounds heavier, and possessed a once in a generation arm. Flacco’s release was quicker, his arm was several degrees stronger than CJ’s arm, and Flacco could spin the ball on a rope. All in all, the only similarities between CJ and Flacco is their height, and even then Flacco was taller. Their differences amount to a first round pick and a “maybe” late round draft choice. My guess is CJ gets his opportunity via free agency.

Oh boy.

CJ is a solid QB, especially at FCS level.
but he ain't getting drafted. And is not going to make an NFL roster. No chance.

+2. He's great for FCS and has good (not great) size, but while he can have times where he has a really great arm...he also has other games where his consistency leaves much to be desired. Maybe coaches think they can fix some of that. I would be glad to be wrong. Nooch was a shocking draft pick and hasn't panned out (not that I think his chances are 100% done...but pretty close...especially considering how badly they screwed up playcalling for him). Even in a down year for graduating P5 QBs, I haven't seen Cole in a single conversation. He might make a practice squad if he wants to go that route, but 0 chance he gets drafted.

If Nooch had a chance, CJ has a chance. Nooch had more multiple interception games that I thought would be detrimental to his chances.
Cole can make all of the throws.
Although, I think it's going to take a deep playoff run for it to happen.

The coaching staff must like what he does. His game was same last year.

He's the starter because the ST coach likes him because he reminds him of himself. It's pretty pathetic. How does he let that ball bounce past him with no defenders around!??!

Yep, he takes over whenever he wants. If you see a run up the middle on first down it's CC.

Because I don't think Cole will get drafted does not mean I don't think he's one hell of an FCS QB.

He’s most definitely not getting drafted. Look at these lists, you’ll see QBs that also won’t get drafted and you’d trade our QB for in a heartbeat:

Not that I think Cole is getting drafted, but those links at bunk. The last one has Rattler still rated as top QB.

Sounded like Swann had a possibility of replacing Sroba as the punt returner at the beginning of the season. Our punt return game has to be near the bottom of the CAA/NCAA.

It seems that Cignetti is comfortable with Sroba fair catching the football almost every time. Guess there aren't any other athletes on the team (e.g., Thornton or Vanhorse among others) who Cignetti or the special teams coach (who IMO hasn't done much to improve specifically our return teams performances on game day) feel comfortable enough putting back there and letting them return a punt from time to time. You would think Thornton could fair catch a punt as well as Sroba does.

Not sure if any of you noticed like I did last week when we hosted Campbell that Cignetti was lining Sroba up on the sidelines when we would initially set up for a punt return. Seems like our HC is alot more hands on with the punt return team than some of us thought or maybe think he should be.

To be honest I don't think the current coaching staff got enough out of Amos his last year at JMU when we were making a run at the FCS Championship before he decided with COVID-19 to transfer to UVA for the 2020 Season.

As an aside let's face it, our ST Coach hasn't had to do much to improve Ratke's accuraccy, Harry's distance or Connor Madden/Camden Wise's kickoffs. Connor Madden was booming kicks out of the end zone at Bridgewater which is why he transferred to JMU.

Along with being a huge Dukes fan/grad, I'm a Cowboys fan and not slamming Nooch because I know it will hurt Purple's feelings among others but the Nooch's getting drafted by Dallas and still being on the practice squad is just as much about who you know (e.g., Mike McCarthy's brother) than how well you perform at training camp, in preseason games and in actual in season games.
