RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Looks like Glasser was in California looking at 2022 PG Makaih Williams and 2023 SF Athian Athian. I'm not sure if either has a D1 offer yet. Hard to find much on either.

And Pera was in Arizona visiting commit Mekhi Mason, who plays for the preseason #1 prep team in the country. My guess is that after this HS season, we're going to be ecstatic that Mason committed a year ago (assuming he remains committed). There are going to be a lot of eyeballs on AZ Compass Prep and I'd bet an unsigned Mason would get a bunch of really decent offers.

Decent shot mechanics, decent handle, some flashes of athleticism. Hard to get a better read because I'm only seeing highlights of his AAU play.

Jones committed to Rice a few days ago - don't know if we've mentioned that or not.

So does that close out the recruiting for 2022 (at least for now)?

Mason and Jones have official signed. Securing Mason, who's a legit contributor on the best prep team in the country, is big. Nothing on Akuchie yet. He committed fairly recently, so not sure why he wouldn't sign.

Look, it’s 2021 and I fully expect us to have an additional roster spot available… But if I’m reading our roster correctly, we only have two scholarships guaranteed to be open next year… Those vacated by Pierre and McBride.

Could the staff have told Akuchie that he needs to wait till spring to ensure that we have a spot for him?

No, because Jones committed after Akuchie. A coaching staff would never recruit over its scholarship limit and then ask a guy who committed before another player to play the waiting game. That would be recruiting suicide - every coach recruiting against us would tell recruits that Pera is untrustworthy.

I've always assumed that Mullins is going to graduate, since he's an academic senior.

Got it-wasn’t sure about the chronology of the commitments but yeah, my theory doesn’t hold if that’s the case.

Agree that Mullins likely graduates-and either hangs it up or grad transfers.

Akuchie officially signs. So unless there are transfers and we need to look into the portal (very possible), next year's team is set.

Looks like another really good class. Pera and his staff have an outstanding track record of identifying talent at the high school level - I'm not sure of another sport on campus that has done a better job in bringing in top-50 type recruiting classes year after year. The only other sport that would compare is volleyball. Hopefully baseball will be right back at that level (or higher) as they seem to be trending that way too. And women's basketball is off to a good start with their first class.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
It's kind of interesting to see that all three are playing for top notch prep (academy) programs. Mason has teammates rated 32nd (Auburn signee), 46th and 51st (UCLA signee) on the ESPN top 100 recruits for 2022. Jones has teammates rated 7th (Arkansas signee), 14th (LSU signee), 33rd (Michigan signee), and 59th (Ohio State signee) on the top 100 list.

Of course both of those academies are nothing compared to IMG which has nine players listed in the top 100! I don't understand how that is possible, unless they have more than 1 team?

So from out here in SoCal ... there was a Mater Dei-St John's Bosco football game a few years ago where a combined 51 kids had D1 offers.

The answer out here is that all of the Trinity League schools (all private schools - probably toughest league in the country) recruit kids from all over Southern California so many have experience and tape from their previous school. Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas does the same thing and no one in Nevada can stay within 50 points of them.

There is no such thing as amateur basketball anymore. IMG has their choice of the top players and the scouts all watch those kids all year so they receive high rankings. Younger players see it and the cycle repeats.

IMG appears to have three teams that 11th & 12th graders (and beyond) could play for:

NATIONAL TEAM
IMG’s National Team competes against some of the nation’s top programs while earning unparalleled exposure during showcases and national-televised games and tournaments. Student-athletes within this team aspire to compete for top D1 programs or at the NBA and professional levels. Training consists of intensive workouts and team development that mirrors that of an elite collegiate program.

VARSITY TEAM
IMG offers several Varsity teams to accommodate student-athletes at various levels. Varsity teams compete against regional and national programs and also take on a challenging seasonal schedule. Varsity student-athletes have an opportunity to gain collegiate exposure during showcases and tournaments as well as on campus.

POST-GRADUATE TEAMS
IMG’s dedicated post-graduate teams competes against national competition at various tournaments and showcase events, allowing them to gain unprecedented exposure. Post-graduate players do not jeopardize their NCAA eligibility while preparing for their next steps at the collegiate level both on the court as well as with a college placement advisor and academic staff. Post-graduates will develop through position-specific training while benefitting from an extra season to increase physicality as well as mental toughness and maturity.

(Source: https://www.imgacademy.com/boarding-scho...basketball)

For younger students, IMG also has middle school and "Junior National" teams.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
I did some digging and watched some film on Mason Jones, because why outline for law school exams when you can watch prep basketball? Jones plays for Link Prep, which is distinct from Link Academy (which is the stacked team with college commits galore). Only a couple of Jones's Link Prep teammates seem to be legit D1 prospects (mostly at the mid-major level). I honestly only watched for a couple minutes because they ended up winning by like 70 and you can't really learn anything from that. From watching some other highlights too, Jones is a good HS defender but can get a bit handsy at times. That works when you're up against opponents that are worse than you, but the next step (he might already be there and it's just not on what I've seen) is marrying better footwork with being selectively handsy.

Mason, on the other hand, does play for a team with ridiculous talent. But, unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any live streams of his games. He's averaging 14.5 points in their two games, but Arizona Compass, like Jones's team, have won both of those by 50+. So no way to know if his early production is because the bench is getting considerable playing time. It doesn't sound like that's the case, though.

The riceowls write up says Jones’ team is #9 in the nation though. Not sure if they mixed them up. Not sure how talented Illinois 3A is but I’m happy for us to find more Chicago area talent. Lots of good basketball in that part of the country.

Jones, a 6-3 guard, is playing his prep ball at Link Year Prep in Branson, Mo., which is ranked ninth in the country. So far this year, he is averaging 16.0 points, 5.5 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Jones graduated from Bogan High School in Chicago, Ill., where he was a member of the Bengals' 3A state runner-up team. As a junior, he helped lead the team to the sectional and regional championships before the state championships were canceled due to COVID-19. In his career, Jones averaged 14 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Think it's just a mixup. Link Year Academy is ranked top 10, but I don't see anything that says Link Year Prep is ranked.

Think it's just a mixup. Link Year Academy is ranked top 10, but I don't see anything that says Link Year Prep is ranked.

This MaxPreps site (Oct. 27, 2021) shows Link Academy ranked #7 in its "Top 20 Independent" the pre-season poll: https://www.maxpreps.com/news/n2fqnYHq40...top-20.htm

Here's a link to a long and informative local newspaper article about the Link Academy/Prep program:
https://www.news-leader.com/story/sports...461597001/

Excerpts:

Quote:In recent weeks, the new high school basketball program on the campus of Camp Kanakuk in Branson has attracted some of the best recruits in the country,

Link Academy is quickly becoming a national power and it has yet to play a single game.

"Link Academy" is the newest school on the "Link" campus. Link Year Prep has been a prep school and it has had a pair of basketball programs at the national and regional levels that have developed dozens of Division I players over the years.

Link Academy is a new high school to go along with the established Link Year Prep. The high school was a part of a long-term plan (Adam) Donyes envisioned when he founded Link Year as a nine-month biblical gap year program.

With a new team, Link Academy needed a coach.

Donyes, a former basketball player at Boise State, hired former Missouri State standout Rodney Perry

Link Academy will play a national schedule with its sights on being invited to play in the GEICO Nationals — an end-of-season invitational tournament for the top high school basketball teams in the country.

Link Academy also has a MSHSAA affiliation and hopes to play local schools in the Ozarks — but, as you can imagine, it's struggling to find teams that will agree to play it.

Donyes and Perry are aware of the resentment a traditional high school basketball fan might have against something like Link Academy.

Instead of a typical Friday night game between Kickapoo and Glendale with homegrown athletes, Link Academy will represent the Ozarks with many recruited out-of-town players at different tournaments around the country and on numerous nationally televised games.

Of the 14 lottery picks in July's NBA Draft, 11 attended a private high school, two were foreign players and only one played at a public high school.

"More and more kids are going to places like this because it's going to help them achieve their goals a lot better than going to a traditional high school where they don't have the resources that we have," Perry said.

Donyes used to teach at Kansas City Christian and worked at Kanakuk during the summers. He thought it would be a great place for a school to use the nine months out of the year when Kanakuk camps weren't in session.

So Donyes started a partnership with Camp Kanakuk to form Link Year to where it used the dorms and other facilities on campus.

From the beginning, he planned on basketball being a part of it. For the first few years, it began as a biblical gap year program for graduated high school students who wanted a year of preparation before attending college. Donyes didn't want, and still doesn't want, the school to be known as just a basketball factory.

After it was established, the Link Year Prep basketball program was formed. Teams over the years produced dozens of Division I players — most notably former Philadelphia 76ers guard Mason Jones, Cincinnati center Hayden Koval ...

As the success piled up for Link Year Prep and Donyes advanced further into his plan, the establishment of Link Academy was made possible.

Donyes and Link Academy are in the early stages of building a school aside from what's already on the Kanakuk campus.

Donyes said a new "high school sports academy" will break ground this fall that is envisioned to be something like IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Once complete, Link Academy hopes to add men's and women's golf, tennis, cross country and women's basketball.

Illinois goes up to 4A in basketball, with the biggest schools being in 4A. But still plenty of D-I caliber players at the 3A level, as those schools can still have enrollments up to about 1600. For example, of the 5 Illinois scholarship players on last year's Illini roster, 3 were from 3A and 2 from 4A.

We should be recruiting Mike Loughnane.

https://twitter.com/nweitzer7/status/147...42114?s=21

Same alma mater as Evee and Pierre (and myself).

We’ve had good luck with the Boston area-between those two and Rob Martin.

Mason, who was nominated for the McDonald's All-American team, doesn't make the final cut. Most interesting to me is that the Big 10 has a grand total of 0 players on the team. Mason also might be hurt, though I can't really find much information.
