RE: MBB vs. Pepperdine (Nov. 9)
82-63 final and it wasn't that close. Defensive effort in particular was solid, save for the last 5 or so minutes. Wouldn't say this was a super difficult offense to play against, especially with some of the guys Pepperdine was missing. But we've struggled with those in the past anyway. Really liked the effort on both ends.

> Evee: 24 points, basically set the tone for us in the 2nd half
> Fiedler: 9 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists. A very Fiedler like game
> Poteat: 10 points, 7 rebounds. Really, really promising first couple games for him this year

Olivari struggled a bit, but 13 for Pierre, 9 for Lieppert, and 7 for Sheffield. Also 4 points, 4 assists, 4 steals from McBride. Really good balance. And this was a game where we didn't even shoot it that well (35.5% from 3).

Hutchins looked a bit more off the pace than some of the other rotation guys. I'm gonna chalk that down to this being his first college game. Geron and McDowell definitely looked like freshmen in their limited minutes. Hopefully we can beat some teams badly to get them some minutes.

Reminds me of JV and Varsity in high school (though we had better crowds).

Reality and truth is this is how doubleheaders have always been done see the Palestra and Madison Square Garden.

Yup. We last did it in the women's volleyball game against UT in September.

All the St. John’s games I went to during the 2019-20 season started on time but YMMV.

Mullins had a finger on his right hand taped up. We looked pretty good in the first half. Second half, awesome. Much better defense than I am used to seeing.

Mullins hurt shooting hand index finger earliesh in the first half, came back out with it taped up. Would be awful.

Best hustle from a Rice team in I can't remember how long. And not once did we do the dribble dribble dribble drive to the hoop with 5 seconds to go on the clock crap that we've seen for 25 years.

Pretty optimistic....

We dominated the glass. I can’t remember Pepperdine getting any offensive reb I the second half. Very impressive win tonight. We finished our drives in the secon half much better and some really awesome passes!

RE: MBB vs. Pepperdine (Nov. 9)
Really great effort in the 2nd half. As I've said a few times already, this is the deepest Rice team I can ever recall. One injury (Mullins) isn't going to be a game-changer.

Fiedler had a very good game. Evee a great 2nd half. Pierre was solid. Poteat is going to be tough to not start against the bigger teams. You also have to be impressed by the improvement of someone like Lieppert, who has been buried on the depth chart in the past. And Hutchins was fun to watch before he just was gassed at the end.

Pepperdine was missing some guys so I suspect they'll be better later in the year. But we outscored them by 27 at one point of the 2nd half, before we emptied the bench.

The crowds will get bigger as the season goes on I suspect. Word is going to get around that you don't want to miss out on seeing this team.

One game is a small sample size, but still a good-looking one from the Rice perspective. I'll take it.

The students filled up their section. I took a picture but I'm too lazy to post it. The students outdid us tonight in terms of showing up.

Free t-shirt and pizza, and a chance to win an electric scooter, is a pretty good motivator.

RE: MBB vs. Pepperdine (Nov. 9)
Pera made a good comment on the post-game presser in regards to the defense. Basically, he said the defensive effort was always there, but sometimes you just can't get to where you want to on the defensive end until you get a little experience and games under your feet. So hopefully that 2nd half defensive performance is a harbinger of things to come.

I can't tell if we're getting UH at a good time or the wrong time - maybe a bit of both? They have some injury situations they're dealing with as well, so I'm pretty sure we won't see Mack for them since he didn't play in the exhibition game or last night. They only played 8 folks total in their overtime game.

Hope they can do some sick tricks on that electric scooter.
