I'm just wondering...
if Rice is such as good academic school, why are we so pathetic at white-outs, black-outs, etc?! I see other schools on tv doing it without a single person not getting the memo.
Does the word not get out? Or do Rice fans think it is silly? Do we not print enough black t-shirts for all the fans who didn't get the memo?
Did the announcers on ESPN+ say we were doing a blackout, and show the crowd? UGH.
The student body was about 90% blacked out, but they are in the end zone.

Only the students got free t-shirts upon entering Tudor. For the rest, I think the athletic department did a solid job getting the word out via both social media and e-mail.

Yes, I think so. I certainly think that kind of nonsense belongs to the college sports factories, where conformity is the norm.

As someone who has spent decades trying to organize Rice fans in various ways, I certainly share your frustration. Try to arrange a bus trip to an away game, and people will calculate that they could save $8 and 21 minutes by going on their own. Try to get a group of fans to sing the Rice fight song or Old Gray Bonnet, and they'll stand their hesitantly watching you sing by yourself. Try to organize a watch party, and people will say that they would rather watch with the few people they know and NO ONE ELSE than get together with other fans they may not already know well. A huge proportion of Rice folks seem to place no value on communal activity as enjoyable in its own right, and great value on avoiding social risk.
Some flatter themselves that this trait is due to non-conformity, but that seems backwards. It is almost certainly more due to social fear: fear that if they join the group activity, others may not to follow, and then they would stand out by participating. So the socially safest course is to opt out, and thus to blend in with the others who also (as they always have) opt out.

In my experience nerds have plenty of black t-shirts . But at our age we're not fitting into that Rush or Jethro Tull concert circa sometimes in the 80's memory we cling to.

George, as you know I did organize watch parties for football during the peak Bailiff years and I have to say as long as the team was decent, there was interest. We had good turnouts several years in a row and at some point we had multiple watch parties throughout the city. Interest dried up when the team cratered. Since we have so many games on ESPN +, I am thinking about trying to organize a watch party for the MBB team later in the season if there is interest. I think if the team is good, some interest will be there.
Edit: In response to the OP, I did wear black last night at the game, but looking at the audience, I think most of us are way too old to be playing dress up games unfortunately. At least the students were there and wearing black.

RE: I'm just wondering...
I didn't hear any mention of the 'black out'... and I'm on a lot of mailers/emails/texts etc. I did note that this Saturday against WKU is 'Blue/Grey' day, but no indication of what that means. I will likely wear blue and grey, but I typically do that anyway
Having done the same thing, though not as much as George, I have had similar experiences and opinions. Unlike WRC, I can't say its 'wrong'. I'd probably just say it is perhaps ONE issue... and as George said, applies to 'some'. Perhaps engineers more than lawyers?

Those are two of my three favorite colors* to wear on any occasion, not just Rice events. :)

Absolutely! I just need to know whether I have until 2022 or 2023 to clean my house and make my back yard presentable...

But don't go to TOO much trouble -- a certain fraying around the edges is expected in New Orleans.

There was free black t-shirts available to all that wanted them. Still had some left at the end of the game. I think Pera wants for all Tuesday games. Tied into the black unis the team wore.

I think doing something like this makes more sense when the color is like, one of the actual school colors.
Maybe we can add black as an another (unofficial) school color for athletics like TCU has done.

Or try and convince Trey Smith (Rice '06) to host the event at Saint-Germain. He was recently named as Food & Wine's best new chef. You might be able to leverage the Rice connection to snag a table there (I couldn't find one during AGU in a month and half...)

Well, that helps explain my inability to snag a table...
Not to drag this too off topic, but if anyone has a recommendation for what they might call a hidden gem in the Quarter/Frenchman St/Bywater area for dinner, I would love to hear them.
I've realized I should branch out from my usual haunts for once.
