Realistically there’s EKU, UTC, and maybe a few of the WAC Texas schools.

I don’t think UCA or Kennesaw St are ready to move.

Missouri St is an odd scenario—I think they opt to stay FCS.

As for the Texas WAC schools, I wonder about ACU as a potential fbs school. Private school that obviously has money for athletics. New football stadium in 2017 and in the middle of an expensive renovation of their arena. The fb stadium seats 12k but open berms in end zones for easy expansion. A possibility if they are interested.

Honestly, I was a bit surprised they weren't included, as it gets CUSA to a more comfortable 10, or 8 if WKU & MTSU bolt.

I'm not sure what's in this for Liberty.

IMO, Liberty has been religiously stigmatized by conferences, which tend to be run by university presidents who are either woke, or else know that for career purposes they better kow-tow to the woke-liberal establishment. Because that is the dominant ideology of college administration.

The upshot being, Liberty knows that long-run, they are likely better off being in a conference, and CUSA desperation is an opportunity for them to "break the ice" and get in to a conference.

Which could then be a stepping-stone to getting in to a better conference, once other conferences realize that the sky didn't fall in when they were a member of CUSA.

That is my admittedly pure speculation about what Liberty gets from this.

Maybe so but they've got a tv deal with ESPN and have been able to schedule surprisingly well for an Independent G5 level program. Bowls don't appear to be an issue either. It's perplexing to me but you might be right.

A chance to be in the Access Bowl race conversation when they are having an especially good season.

It seems like they are pursuing their sports program for the profile that it brings, and that's the next highest profile short of actually grabbing the spot.

The question will be whether a CUSA-affiliated Liberty can maintain the coaches and recruits of an independent Liberty.

Why wouldn’t they?

That’s it. The CFP criteria make it next to impossible, practically, for an independent other than Notre Dame to ever qualify for a CFP bowl game. Independent teams are not given a level playing field.

If the CFP criteria gave the “access” spot to the highest-ranked team not in a P conference, instead of the highest-ranked G conference champ, then indy teams would be on a level playing field in terms of competing for that spot.

Let’s see
UTEP - NMSU
L Tec - SHSU
MT - WKY
JS. - FIU
UMASS - Stoney Brook
Liberty - NC A&T

Five division games, three cross over games & four regional OOC games.

As far as coaches, certainly yes.

As far as recruits ... I would have the same question as DoubleRSU: why not? That chance to be in a Access Bowl conversation is not just hypothetical ... Liberty would be going into most CUSA football seasons expecting to have a serious chance of winning the conference.

Don't think any other Colonial teams would jump... especially all sports. Would have to be football only. Would UConn bite? I think zipper is the only way to play this. Why not have an 8 team football league and play a home and home with your travel partner? 1+1+6 = 8 conference games. Just a thought...

Read the thread for the idea of a 4 D1 subdivisions. CAA is losing 1 school, but why look at more than 4? Unless more schools are looking to jump to FBS?

C-USA is making, in their judgment, the best choices, among very narrow options, to sustain itself. That includes being the host to a couple of FCS teams with immediate FBS ambitions, and adding a couple of FBS schools by-passed by other G5 conferences.

It's not pretty, but I hope it works-out well for them.

RE: Breaking: NMSu, Liberty, SHSU & Jax State to CUSA
Anyone who denied that ESPN is really running college sports, look no further than the SBC/C-USA developments.

Marshall and ODU were rumored to be wanting to make a C-USA split, because the TV money was terrible and the Texas/Florida group of C-USA was bad at basketball.

The eastern five of C-USA, plus the two of the three best of the west could be a really good start to a league: Marshall, ODU, Charlotte, MTSU, WKU, UAB, and La Tech -- add in Liberty and Buffalo and you're looking at a solid football league and a 1.5-bid basketball league.

The split plan wanted to get away from: Rice, UTSA and FAU.

C-USA after the AAC raid was ACTUALLY BETTER ON PAPER than the old C-USA. But Marshall, ODU and So Miss wanted to GTFO for the Sun Belt. the only real reason for that is ESPN: the SBC TV deal is better. Competitively, it makes more sense for C-USA to take Coastal, App St, Lafayette and Ga State.

This^^^

Liberty has no direct bowl tie-ins, could legitimately finish 9-3, and still not go to a bowl game. Certainly the Access Bowl would be more attainable since only Gang if 5 league champions are eligible for it. To play in the postseason is a big deal. Liberty chose to not have that be a concern whenever they have a good season.

Yeah, BYU had the same problems when they initially tried to get into the Big XII back in 2016. Funny, those same organizations that touted "diversity" & "equality" then when Texas and Oklahoma were still going to be in the Big XII were amazingly silent this time even though BYU changed nothing in their Honor Code.

There are some, who choose to believe that intolerance is a one-way street. No. It really isn't. There's enough intolerance to go around on all sides. It shouldn't be transferred to the field of college athletics, but there are some, who insist that it should be for no other reason than to be intolerant and woke of someone's chosen beliefs and lifestyles.

Sticking with 9 for the time being, at least until 2023-24 is probably the right move since it only reloads with 2 FCS upgrades.

Two years from now there may be some more movement which necessitates more expansion.

What about eight conference games for Liberty (everyone else plays 9)? That way, each pair can play a home and home. Could be a sort of unique thing for Conf USA.
