LaTech 2-6 (1-3) @ UAB 5-3 (3-1) - The tale of 2 teams that were cruising along pretty well and then then the wheels start falling off of the proverbial wagon. UAB lost to Georgia, no big deal, then Liberty, Liberty is solid, which we later found out was not so solid. Then Rice at home in the new arena, ouch. Now La Tech, lost heartbreakers to some really good teams. Miss St., SMU, and N C State. Then the 3 straight in the league culminating with ODU. I expect UAB to pull this out in front of the home folks but then I felt the same way against Rice. UAB 31 La Tech 21
North Texas 2-6 (1-3) @ Southern Miss 1-7 (0-4) - This had the earmarks of being the Futility Bowl of CUSA for 2021 but then North Texas goes out and beats Rice in OT. The Sothern Miss offense is offensive take away the Grambling game and they have amassed 1,600 yards in 7 games, that's 229 yards per game. I have to pick the Mean Green for having some life after surviving on Rice. North Texas 35 Southern Miss 20
Rice 3-6 (2-2) Charlotte 4-4 (2-2) - Another couple of perplexing teams. Rice has lost to all the really good teams they have played but then go into Birmingham and steal one against the Blazers. The same Blazers that some contend were supposed to rule the west, this is the Rice team that was roasted by UTSA 45-0. Now Charlotte, other than maybe MTSU, has lost to any team that would be considered decent this fall. Tough call here. Leaning towards the 49ers since they have the home turf but Rice winning would not be a shock. Charlotte 31 Rice 28
MTSU 4-4 (2-2) @ WKU 4-4 (3-1) - MTSU has the Marshall game to hang their hat on, so to speak, and other than Liberty has been in contention in their loses. When you look at WKU being 4-4 you assume they are mediocre but they have scored at least 31 in every game, which includes number 3 Michigan State, you might think they may not be too bad. I don't think Middle has a chance unless Armstrong plays, otherwise look for the Hilltoppers to continue to light up the scoreboard. WKU 49 MTSU 27.
Marshall 5-3 (3-1) @ FAU 5-3 (3-1) - This looks like the game of the week, The Sun Belt vs. The American, oh wait that is down the road. Both teams have that one game or two that they wish they had a do-over in. Marshall has MTSU and ECU, while FAU has Air Force and UAB. Not a lot of love between these 2 programs but I'm sure quite a bit of respect. Tough call for me but I hope Taggart gets the W. FAU 42 Marshall 37
ODU 2-6 (1-3) @ FIU 1-7 (0-4) - FIU has not won since the season opener against the Long Island Teas and has given up quite a few points since. ODU, on the other hand, has not provided more than 21 points other than the 34 against Buffalo. Look for a packed house this weekend in Miami, not at the game, but likely at some of the nearby clubs. I doubt Butch Davis is around next fall, but I am leaning the way of the Panthers. I was thinking Hayden Wolfe might be the future for the Monarchs but 149 yards on 34 completions against Louisiana Tech made me think hard about that assessment. FIU 35 ODU 31
#16UTSA 8-0 (4-0) @ UTEP 6-2 (3-1) - The Road Runners head into El Paso ranked number 16 and do not have a blemish on their resume. While the homestanding Miners are hosting at a lofty 6-2 coming off a tough loss in Boca Raton. I don't believe the Roadrunners are the 16th best team in the nation but they are pretty durn good none the less. UTEP has improved since 2020 but taking a quick glance at their schedule that is part of the equation. There are a lot of sub 500 teams on their resume. Despite the Miner's resurgence, I expect the Road Runners to add to their flawless record. They just have too many weapons. Harris and his receivers and McCormick are just too much for UTEP to handle. UTSA 45 UTEP 28
