Her dad is named Mike, but I don't believe there is any relation to the Mike Conley (Sr) who was a track and field star in the 1980's and 1990's, or his son Mike Conley Jr., who plays in the NBA.

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
So is that 4 commits for the current senior class (Class of 2022) and two junior commits (Class of 2023). It's tough to keep track to be honest.
But I believe it's Shelby Hayes, 6-2, P (Cedar Park)
Kennedy Clifton, 5-11 F/G (Alexandria, VA - Bishop Ireton)
Hailey Adams, 6-0 G (San Antonio Clark)
Jazzy Owens-Barnett, 5-7 G (Plano Liberty)
Signing day is a week from tomorrow (November 10)

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
Some comments in an Edmonds article today in the Thresher that don't exactly exude confidence about her roster management.
Says she took the players transferring personally, and suggests she had a bad conversation with Nancy Mulkey (upon taking the job) that led to her transfer.

Hmm, can't find the comments. Is it this piece you were referring to? https://www.ricethresher.org/article/202...new-season

Definitely some weird quotes. I'm all for coaches speaking their minds (I wish it happened more often), but choosing your words carefully is also important. It's possible that the transcription makes it sound like she's saying something about Mulkey that wasn't meant, but even then, I'm not sure why a coach would ever publicly single somebody out unless it's for a positive reason. I don't mind the taking the players transferring personally comment. I'm pretty sure all coaches feel that when there's an exodus, they just don't say it out loud. But I don't get the mules/horses distinction - surely you also could've gotten horses from the transfer portal.

RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
Here is the excerpt of the story we're referring to:
“When I took this job, I thought the cupboard was very full,” Edmonds said. “I had initial conversations with all of them, except Nancy Mulkey, that went really well, and I didn’t anticipate them leaving. Once the first one went, it was a spiral of ‘oh she did it, now I’m gonna do it.’ I fought really hard to get them all to stay. I guess it wasn’t meant to be for me to have that roster. That’s not to say I didn’t take it extremely personally. But once they all [made] their decisions, the only thing I could do to navigate through it was to turn the page and move past it.”
Edmonds said she looked at the transfer portal, but ultimately decided to focus on recruiting, one of her favorite parts of the job, to make up for the departures.
“My former boss used to say you can’t win the Kentucky Derby with a mule,” Edmonds said. “You have to have some horses. I love recruiting, [especially the] developing relationships [part of it]. I’ve been recruiting coordinator at a lot of my stops, and I’ve been able to get some pretty good recruits. It’s not just about basketball players, it’s about getting well-rounded [people].”

Did she just not have a conversation with Nancy ("I had initial conversations with all of them, except Nancy Mulkey...") or have a conversation with Nancy that went badly ("I had initial conversations with all of them that went really well, except with Nancy Mulkey" - my editing)?
I'd read what was quoted in the article the first way, not the second.

I had the same reaction. Not exactly clear ... needed a good attorney to ask a follow-up!

I was at the scrimmage last week against HBU and I already am thinking Edmonds might end up being a better game coach than Langley. I really liked her demeaner on the sideline.
But she certainly will have growing pains this year.

I think the conversation went something like this:
Nancy, we would really like you to stay.
Nancy: No.
I would say that conversation went badly.

Too bad we don't have any of those on the Parliament.
I guess I had too many years of trying to read and understand licensing contracts, many of which I thought the lawyers intentionally wrote to confuse mere mortals like myself, to just read through a sentence like the one contained in the article without questioning what was really meant.

Are you allowed to disclose anything more about the scrimmage? Not score or stats or anything - more like general impressions (about system or players).

That's how I read this too.
The horses vs mules thing also doesn't worry me too much. Could be that she *did* take a thorough look at the portal, discover that the horses weren't interested in racing with her, and pivoted fully to recruiting

Probably not, but I think it's okay to say that we only played 7 players (we didn't play the freshman walk-on, and then our three most experienced returning players didn't play). But I really get the sense that all three (Crossthwaite, Swayze and McCurry) will be good to go in the opener next week. Crossthwaite suited up - the other two did not but were in warm-ups and didn't look to be dealing with major injuries?
We seem to be pushing an up-tempo offense and an aggressive defense too, although we were a little gassed at the end of the game.
I really don't think I should say any more. If we can stay healthy, we'll be competitive in most of our games. Pray for good health.

Yes, I think it was pretty obvious that as soon as Langley was announced at Washington that Nancy was going to follow. She had already graduated, had entered the transfer portal (even before Langley left) and Rice did not offer a grad degree in her area of specialty. She was gone by the time Edmonds was hired.
Having said that, I did ask Lindsey the question why she didn't more aggressively work the transfer portal, especially given the severely depleted roster. Her response (at the Assist Club dinner a couple weeks back) was that she felt it would hurt the chemistry of the squad...and that she wanted to maintain maximum flexibility for future recruiting classes. Of course, signing senior or grad transfers who have only one year of remaining eligibility would not have affected such flexibility.
