And by expansion I really mean demolishing existing buildings and replacing then with new buildings/classrooms?

RE: What plans are there at this time for expansion of our campus?
The Campus Center Building (next to Sam Wilson/Quad area) is set to be demolished to make room for the new Humanities building.

ETSU, Ballad Health and Johnson City are developing Innovation Park. The 60 acre Park will be for research, medical and new business development. The Park is adjacent to other ETSU medical buildings and Ballad Med Center.

Is the park on the VA campus?

No. It's 'just' the old TN National Guard Armory and TVA buildings site (not sure how they delineate what's what there). Adjacent to/part of where Innovation Lab has been for ~10-12 years or more. I.e..........just west of Fresh Market, Chick-fil-A, Woodridge, and Walgreen's (where that development jerk cut down those trees amid much controversy). Literally, just to prove he could.

This is great news. Our campus has needed it for decades. I hope they are planning to build an impressive building vertically as we need a land mark building that people can immediately point to. With real estate being limited around campus let us build future academic buildings with enough stories to contain all the departments needed and leave room for growth. Cannot wait for this building!

Is the state of Tennessee now being more generous with money to its public colleges for these sort of projects as opposed to the 25+ years it took to actually partially fund the Fine Arts Building?

Probably not but the thing we have going for us is that it is decades over due and needed. Like an on campus basketball arena, it will be fought by many locals but I hope we get a nice Humanities building built sooner rather than later.

I suppose most of us saw this from a few days ago:

TN education funding gets an "F"

NO. Tenn is more interested in growing the rainy day fund than growing an educated work force. The Humanities Bldg, like other projects, has been on the request list forever. In many cases, the Universites now have to raise a designated amount toward their building project before state will grant funds. Just roadblocks to better education.

Don’t know if this will work. We’re #5 with the Academic Building. See ATTACHMENT 1.

No way that can be built for $1.8 million. That's SOOO pathetic that the state wants each STATE institution to significantly fund their own building projects. I know, I know, it's not quite that simple. But still..............
Another way to look at that chart is that because ETSU has only been able to match 6% of the project request, it may be a while before that really gets going. Used to know more about how all that works out than I do these days.

[edit/update: I mistakenly read the "5" in the "51,794,000" as a dollar sign. Which explains why I wrote "$1.8 million" earlier. I *knew* that couldn't be right, but my eyeballs just didn't look carefully enough. My bad.]

ETSU has requested 72 mil from the State for the Humanities Bldg. The University would provide 9.6 mil in matching funds.

And — why does the state of Tennessee continue to refuse full funding for the College of Pharmacy after all these years? What are the ugly politics behind that? Pharmacy has more than eared this many times over. This is infuriating!!

Because the people in Knoxville oppose our College of Pharmacy. They are a powerful entity in this state politically and in money. We are hoping Dr. Noland can break through. It has always been a fight for our medical school for the same reason.

I'm sure you remember that was just "the way it was set up", to make it more palatable to the powers-that-be. "We can have a pharmacy school there and it costs us (the state) nothing? Ok, let's go with that, then." It's just hard to add on something to the state budget that the rest of the state gets nothing from (or that's how they'd put it). Which is just a more global way of saying what bucfan81 said.
Same reason I'd have trouble paying full price for a meal somewhere when previously I've been able to use coupons.

That state of TN just doesn't properly value education funding. Never have; never will - unless and until the political climate changes.
