If it is USM plus one, I'm wondering if it would be a more western school and then send USA to the east, but budget wise, JMU, ODU or FAU might be the better options.
Athletically speaking (with budget as a consideration), UNT back to the Sun Belt makes some sense, as does WKU.
(I recognize that I am not a normal Sun Belt forum poster and just along for the ride in terms of conference realignment stuff. I don't mean to disparage any school, and I don't know what kind of relationships the Sun Belt has with especially UNT after they left.)
Welcome aboard! Leave all the disparaging of former belt scabs to the professionals
All sarcasm aside, hasn't ETSU only had the football program up a running for like 3-4 years now? (I know they've built a new stadium and from a few games I've watched looks quaint). I dunno if they're ready for an FBS jump though
I moved away right about the time they were getting up and going. I would guess the stadium is nice but on the small side. They do seem to be getting decent coaches, etc. There was a recent article on ESPN (?) about a player there who got an 8th year of eligibility. I would think their current situation is a good one for them.
When I look at Tennessee's population situation compared to Louisiana, you'd think they would be able to support at least one other FBS school in terms of fan support, but not sure the local recruiting base is there. The numbers: Louisiana 4.6 mil (LSU, UL, ULM, LaTech, Tulane), Tennessee 6.8 mil and quickly growing (UT, Vandy, MUTS, Memphis). East Tennessee appears to be the better football program this year, but looking at things objectively from down here in Louisiana, UT Chattanooga seems to have more growth potential and closer/easier access to fertile recruiting areas.
Problem is most of Tennessee’s population lives in 4 major metro areas. ETSU is not in any of those areas. They might as well be in Virginia given their location
Which was sort of my point with saying UT Chattanooga appears to have more potential as an FCS call up. Chattanooga is the 4th largest metro and they’re on the SE corner of the state closer to Alabama and Georgia. Small enough city where a good college team could really capture local interest as probably only UT Knoxville, if they would ever get really good, would be the main competitor.

There’s never much middle ground in Hattiesburg. We just figure, hey, if we’re going to have a losing season, let’s go ahead and get a few more years’ worth of losses out of the way while we’re at it.

When we do a rebuilding year, we take it all the way down to the studs.

If we call up a FCS team that isn't JMU to pair with Southern Miss I hope it is JSU. Troy/South can still protect their mid-season Battle For The Belt and Troy/Jax State can resume playing for the School Bell at the end of the season. Southern Miss / South would also be a good game for the final week of the season. JSU brings good football and FBS caliber facilities. They also are a pretty decent little baseball school and have good softball.
They are really, really bad at basketball though and have a very tiny arena. That would need improvement.

If it isn’t James Madison then I’m not really on board with any other FCS call up. Jax state has a nice little stadium but there isn’t a need for another program from Bama (the lone exception is the outside chance UAB gets snubbed by American and they’re looking to get out of cusa). You obviously take their rising brand (and Birmingham to boot) with Southern Miss and call it a day

I understand but I believe JSU is a better fit in our league than most other C-USA schools. I want us to build a football first league that is exciting to watch and JSU has the football resume to add to that within our existing footprint. That's just my opinion though.
Southern Miss, Marshall, La Tech, and WKU are the only C-USA schools built similar to the SBC model. Rural college town. USM, MU, and LT are the only ones who provide the style of football success that would fit. Therefore if MU and LT are off the board, JMU is off the board, then JSU is the best fit. Missouri State as well would fit but they don't have the football success that JSU has.
Edit: This might be a stretch but adding a NC A&T could be fun addition. We could be the first FBS conference to have a HBCU member. They have good facilities and have really dominated the HBCU football scene as of late.
