The 800 bases is a hugely hyperbolic lie. We may--or may not--have 800 locations around the world where we have military personnel, but a large hunk of them are people like Marine guards at embassies or military attaches that hardly constitute a "base" and are really functioning more as part of the diplomatic corps than as military forces.

That's two minutes of my life that I will never get back. But it is useful to know that there are people out there that are that crazy.

I don't know. There are hundreds and hundreds of regular US bases, well documented, out in the open, so 800 doesn't seem out of line. And I don't believe they are counting embassies as military installations of any kind, because they are, by definition, not military bases.

I think military installations may be a more accepted term, even though bases would be factually correct. Are they all major bases? Of course not. But they all serve a purpose in the military/imtelligence complex and are all part of the US military domination of the world. They are why we're trillions in debt after all.

Well, all I know is that when I've seen the 800 or a similar number before, it has been accompanied by maps or tables showing where, and there have been lots of 1 or 2 people here, 3 or 4 there, and those are clearly diplomatic missions, not military bases.

We are not trillions in debt because of diplomatic missions. Actually, if we spent zero on the entire military over the last 20 years, we'd still be trillions in debt because of the much larger social welfare spending. Of course, we'd probably also be speaking Chinese--or Russian.
