Which conference is most enjoying watching realignment drama?

It's got to be the Big East, right?

The members of this league expanded and expanded and expanded and saw members go and expanded again and saw members go and...

They finally broke off and started the conference anew. Now they're not subject to this madness anymore.

Surely no one is sitting back eating their popcorn through all this than the Big East.

Maybe the MAC is having a laugh. too.

The team I root for may very well end up drawing the realignment short straw, but I still find this all very entertaining. It will almost be sad to see it settle down again in 2025. You do make a good point though, the Big East is in a great place now because their like minded programs split from the rest. It would be nice to see a similar split with some programs from C-USA.

Or perhaps it’s the SEC…

MAC. Lived in the same neighborhood for years, and never really felt the need to even mow the lawn.

The Mid-American Conference has the best view because they actually sponsor football, which is the primary driver of this particular round of realignment, and they are being virtually untouched nestled in a bus league that spans 10 hours from its furthest east and west points.

Probably the Big12, they seemingly stabilized the conference and told the AAC and ESPN to F off. lol

RE: Which conference is most enjoying watching realignment drama?
I agree with the OP - it’s the Big East. They were under attack as the #1 conference realignment target for a decade straight starting with the initial ACC raid of Miami, VT and BC in 2003.

The Catholic 7 removed themselves from the situation of being beholden to football in realignment, make more TV money than the football-playing G5 leagues, won national championships in hoops, and even grabbed UConn back. They went from the league that was in the most danger to now the safest league outside of the Big Ten, SEC and Ivy League. They’ve got to be thrilled that all of those people that thought they were making a mistake extricating themselves from football were 100% wrong. They are the one league that’s totally immune from what happened this year with conference realignment, which is amazing considering that they were always right in the middle of it from 2003 to 2013.

(Disagree about the MAC. They still need to worry if the AAC wants to pick off a school like Buffalo. They can’t rest easy.)

I agree; it’s the Big East. I’m not sure I’d say the MAC is enjoying watching because I’m not sure they even care!

On the flip-side, I’d say the PAC is stressing a bit with Oklahoma and Texas off the market.

Of the conferences actively involved with realignment this year:
Feeling pretty - ASUN, MVC, SEC, SWAC, WAC
Not overly stressed - XII
Neutral - Big South, Summit
Nervous anxiety - AAC
Screaming on fire - MEAC, OVC, Southland

Agreed, its the Big 12.

Cincinnati is the darling of college football right now, and BYU has been right there up until last week. They couldn't have orchestrated a better return to 12.

I'd say the Big 12 as well. People got impatient on their waiting to add schools, but as it worked out, they got great adds and really solidified themselves.

A lot of mid level school presidents and ADs have to be looking at Central Florida and wondering, "damn, how'd they do that?" Not many mid major type schools ever make the jump, and for the Big 12 to get a very deserving one like UCF (in a market like Florida no less!) is a great matchup.

For a conference that lost a lot on the surface, they rebounded perfectly and can now sit back and watch.

I"m obviously an exception, but I think MAC fandom is more interested than Big East fandom because MAC schools play football in FBS, so you play these leagues in bowl games, OOC games, etc.

For a lot of Big East fans, this is like drama between TikTok-ers your kids follow or second-string Kardashians that you can't remember which one is which.

EDIT: The Big 12 is effected, but Cincinnati and Houston lately are good basketball additions. So not a tremendous effect on the basketball landscape.

I'm scratching my head about those saying it's the Big 12. That league is facing court battles & attorneys' fees battling over Texas and OU's departure dates and exit fees. They're losing their two best brands and money makers BY FAR. The television payout is going down by ~$10M. They've landed good additions, but how is any of the above... comfortable?

For the Big East, it's all entertainment. It's theater, and it isn't affecting them at all.

The SEC because they hold all the cards. The Big East is a good second choice because they are stable as well.

Precisely. They get the benefit of their now growing power position and can sit there amused as others struggle, either to survive or to be as relevant.

Not a charitable view, certainly, but they’re certainly laughing all the way to the bank and enjoying every minute of it.

RE: Which conference is most enjoying watching realignment drama?
The Big East shouldn't feel threatened to lose any of its members as long as schools operate football first and football 100% or 95%. The moment that % starts to shrink and men's basketball starts to play a bigger role the Big East could be in danger. As long as the ACC remains intact, I think the Big East should be fine. If they get raided and have to backfill, then you never know, especially if the football first schools that objected to UConn being in the ACC leave. If the basketball schools ever get control of the ACC again, what's to stop them from accepting Villanova and/or Georgetown as an all but football member in addition to UConn? We're a long way from that happening, but you never know.

Also, the Big East just like every other conference in the country can't like the SEC schools getting richer and adding Oklahoma and Texas only makes them richer. I'm in the Big 10 and I don't like it either. It's highly unlikely Ohio State or Penn State is leaving for the SEC. Doesn't mean they aren't going to be richer and more likely to win in the future (more money, better facilities, better coaching, better able to attract recruits).

Exactly! It’s such a strange take to think that the Big 12 is enjoying this at all. They lost their two biggest brands, will likely take a large hit to their TV contract, and every member would take an invite to a different P5 league in a heartbeat. That’s the *opposite* of enjoying conference realignment drama.

The best that you could say about the Big 12 is that they’re relieved that the league didn’t completely get destroyed and they were able to remodel with good athletic programs (albeit no one with the brand names that they just lost). That’s akin to having half of your house burn down and you lost all of your valuables, but at least you’re still alive. It’s a feeling of relief on one level, but still a lot of pain on another level. It’s definitely not entertainment for them.
