RE: Southern Miss Game week
I think the difference in my dislike for them and LT, is that m6 feelings about USM come from heartbreaking losses and a couple of embarrassing beat downs on the field, where LT comes from an entitled, snotty fan base that that has no justification for those feelings

I was there also and that game was absolutely stolen from us. FU USM:)

Yeah, I was there also. As I recall the refs took a TD away from us that would have won the thing on a very questionable penalty.

Jeff Aaron to TJ Simmons for the TD. Illegal man downfield, from the 6 yard line! bull**** of all bull****. Our tickets were on the 10 so it was right in front of us. I cussed my way back to Birmingham.

yep I was right there amongst y'all - we already had the extra point unit on the field and lining up, when they threw a flag, IIRC... I thought it was gonna be a dead ball unsportsmanlike or something... next thing you know, TD was erased and we are back on the field. I was so 03-pissed after that I can't honestly remember WHAT happened after that (it was pretty late in the game), but I do think they blocked a FG attempt to end the drive... 03-banghead03-banghead03-banghead

Our offensive tackle blocked him five yards into the end zone. The referee from Tuscaloosa quit after that year. I remember his name but won’t post it. Jeff Bower was trying to score in the last minute to run the score up. The night he inducted into the USM Hall of Fame he got to watch us beat up USM. USM and La Tech deserve each other

I will never forget the 70 point USM win. But to be fair UAB could not do anything correct. I think we left at halftime when it was something like 50-7.

After so many years of consistent success, it is very hard to fathom USM struggling like this. They were the standard we were chasing for the first two decades of our program

It is puzzling and frightening. A series of bad decisions regarding new coaches was likely significant in the downward spiral. I am impressed with their attendance last Saturday in spite of a losing record.

They had one bad and a couple of kinda meh hires but the biggest things I see that have hurt Southern Miss are:

1) UAB, South Alabama, Troy, Georgia Southern and Georgia State are now FBS options right in the heart of the recruiting territory that build USM Football. To the west of them, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech and Arkansas State were not recruiting threats for much of the 80s and 90s when USM was building its reputation. That is EIGHT programs that weren't gonna beat USM very often for players when Brett Favre and Reggie Collier were running around. Some of them were not even playing FBS football for much of that time. For a very long time, USM was the default best option if you were a prospect in Alabama, Georgia, Florida panhandle, Louisiana and not getting SEC offers. Other than Memphis and Tulane, and to a much lesser extent Louisville and ECU, USM didn't have much competition for those next-tier guys. Now they do.

2) While the spend pretty competitively with peers on football, their overall athletic budget is quite a bit smaller than most. Their facilities don't stack up to some of the shiny new things out there.

These problems are quite a bit deeper than any one coach. They are systemic challenges. But one coach could turn it around for them so that these two things are better addressed, as UAB fans well know.

Very good points. I had not considered all the new competition.

I realized that a long time ago. Their fan base hasn't in general.

Things like the "flagship of CUSA" post and trying to act as if they wouldn't take an AAC invite if offered has made me more than willing to throw more crap on their crappy situation. I still respect their program but I revel in their fans dismay.

Of all our past rivals, Southern Miss is always the one I hate the most. More Memphis in basketball, but in football it is Southern Miss. Their fans are a-holes and only 1 trip to Hattiesburg will make you hate the whole lot

"penalty on the defense for a non football related movement by a player not in the neutral zone".... During the Watson years that gem of a penalty lost us a game at the rock. I was there and dumbfounded

That was at legion field and moved them into field goal range to tie. We lost in overtime. USM was the only ranked CUSA team and they had to be protected

Whoop that ass until the last whistle blows then whoop some more. We not only beat 05-deadhorse but we also do it to golden eagles.

I’ll be happy with just the W, however, I wouldn’t mind running up the score on USM. They’re due. Our last 3 losses to USM:
37-2 in 2019
62-27 in 2013
70-14 in 2008.
