Crossover Games
How many crossover games are required by the NCAA in each sport?

According to NCAA rules, how many games do CUSA East teams have to play against CUSA West teams?

If that's true then it seems a lot of our issues could be solved by eliminating cross division games and only play in the championship.

I like The idea and May even have proposed it a few years back.

But make crossovers “optional”. Not every school wants to have to arrange 6 OOC games. But standings would be based on division games.

Yeah. I'd be fine with that. Just divisional games count against you and try to play as few cross division games as possible.

Honestly, might even be worth expanding more to do this. Definitely something that should be looked in to.

That's great for teams on the outer edge of the conference but sucks for those of us in the center.

I actually thought about this yesterday, although I would add one more team to each division, creating two, compact, regional 8 team mini-conferences, who could fill out their 5 game non-conference schedule however they like, meeting their opposite champion in a championship game.

Not really. If those in the center want to play those crossover games then there would be nothing to stop them from scheduling each other. Basically ooc games.

Seriously sign me up for this. This would be great.

Exactly. They could still play each other, it just wouldn't count towards conference standings.

Operate as two separate conferences in terms of scheduling. Then have our champions play each other.

Wait, the big issue here is playing ONE game per year against the other side of the conference? That's "a lot of our issues?"

Heck, I've got the solution to that. You just buy some plane tickets and fly over and play the game.

Good grief.

It's two games per year in football, and yes that is part of the issue here. It's multiple games in basketball.

One of those football games is a home game. Surely it isn't a issue to host a team at home no matter where they're from?

In basketball we usually don't use divisions. Last year was the first time.

I know.

I'd rather have another OOC game as opposed to playing a team from Texas. I'm sure they feel the same way about Marshall.

RE: Crossover Games
Why be in a conference if you aren't ever going to play the other teams in the conference. I don't want to be in half a conference (which is already what it feels like with 14 teams).

In basketball, you're playing plenty of OOC games. I just don't think the logic works there.

For football, it's just one game. Just the one. One airplane ride. If your team runs out of dramamine, you can always schedule your 4 OOC games within walking distance, or horseback distance, or trolley car distance or whatever you like. There is your trade-off for that awful awful (ONE) flight per year. You end up with the 3 in-division games you already like, plus all OOC games local and for the WHOLE season you only have to board a plane once.

Surely* that's not too much? Do you never want your teams to fly? Ever?

*insert joke about "don't call me Shirley" since we are talking about airplanes here

In 2/7 years you don't even have to cross the Mississippi! You guys can't fly the football team to Texas once a year for 4/7 years? That's too much travel?
One flight?

for me it has less to do with travel and more to do with playing the same teams year end and out so that fans can get interested again. I really don't understand why the schools in the middle of the conference don't get that. SMH

Marshall has scheduled one OOC game west of the Mississippi in the last 50 years. Why do you think that is?

Marshall has scheduled one OOC game west of the Mississippi in the last 50 years. Why do you think that is?

It's probably because there are so many teams out east. So you don't have to if you don't want to. And that's fine. But it also more than makes up for a single trip every season in conference.

If the issue is the travel (as is usually the complaint) my response is - "it's not that bad, get over it."

If the issue is (as you say) wanting to play more often and build rivalry, my response is that 1. that's more about the number of teams in the conference (which is what is keeping the travel issue lower than it'd otherwise be) and 2. you're not ever going to have 8 intense, hated conference rivals.

I think 9 team conferences are best for football and I wish that could somehow become the norm. But it won't. And even if it did, somebody has to be your Vanderbilt (or Iowa State, or Northwestern, or Oregon State). You're not going to have 13 Ap State's to play (and we aren't getting 13 USM's).

If CUSA were to somehow lose only 2 schools to the AAC, my strong preference would be to just stick with a 12 team conference. But you know who wouldn't like that? The fan bases that always complain about the "awful" travel in CUSA. Because 12 teams would mean 3 away games across divisions over 2 years (instead of the 2 over two years we play now). But it would reduce the problem you state above, because we'd cycle through faster and maybe fans would know and care about the other division a little more.
