Temple Should Apply to the CAA as a Football Only Member
And put their other sports back into the Atlantic 10. It's been an interesting experiment but I think it is time for Temple to follow UConn in giving up their football dream and focusing on basketball. If the CAA would accept them, they would have regional rivals like Delaware and JMU. It could make for some fun football games. They would already be a middle of the pack team in the CAA right now instead of having to lose by 50 to Rutgers and Cinci. They would also reunite with A10 basketball rivals. This setup seems overdue in my opinion.

Call me crazy but Temple used to have a pretty good basketball program when they were in the Atlantic 10. They also had more local rivalries. Now they fly all over the country to play teams that no one knows anything about. No offense to the teams but they are too dissimilar and too far away.

Temple has been an historically bad football school. No one cares about it. If they played some of the programs from their region, maybe fans would take an interest. No on gets excited about losing to Cinci by 50 or watching Temple play against low-level FBS opponents. Delaware would be a great rival for Temple being only 40 minutes away. In the CAA they would play smaller state schools like Maine, UNH, URI, UD, Albany, William and Mary, James Madison and some nearby private schools like Villanova and Richmond. It is purely greed that keeps the administration focused on FBS football. They dream of making money like PSU and Pitt do. It will never happen.

Temple has had some pretty good seasons and gets programs like Notre Dame and Penn State to visit. Sorry, not happening.

They want a regional rival in conference? Push for UMass because there is some legit history there. They can always schedule all their OOC basketball games locally.

Temple's got a conference problem, but they're not renting an NFL stadium to play FCS ball. They likely stick it out in the AAC through one more round of departures, but if more schools wind up leaving then they might have to make a decision of some sort.

Yeah, a school that gets multiple bluebloods to play in their stadium should drop down to FCS.

Temple is only a couple/few defections away from being an ACC school. FCS isn’t happening.

RE: Temple Should Apply to the CAA as a Football Only Member
I've said it like a half dozen times, but I'll say it again: Follow the Money.

The AAC has a TV deal that's like $7.5 million AAV to Temple as part of the American. It might go down if ESPN has clauses in it.
The AAC basketball-only share and the A-10 media share are about the same: $1.25 to $1.5 million per school range. I think the A-10 is slightly less, but they have five separate deals, while the AAC has one deal.

But the CAA TV deal for football is what? Like, cost of production? So re-joining the A-10 means Temple loses up to $6 million.

Temple COULD make some of that back by going from FBS to FCS (Saving 22 scholarships, which would be like, $500,000 a year) and the A-10 NCAA payout is more lucrative if you earn the units yourself.

But the difference in AAC NCAA unit payout vs A-10, IF TEMPLE performed the way they did for their last 20 years in the A-10 on average... They'd be earning 1.72 more NCAA units worth per year in the A-10 structure.

Which is about $700,000 more. So they're losing $4.75 million vs staying the American.

It's likely the AAC payment goes down, but it's also likely they can't regain the performance they had in the A-10 because the world has changed and they don't have a Hall of Fame coach like John Chaney anymore. And that's probably a wash.

Then factor in the whole reason your FBS in the first place is the exposure you get from being FBS and they're in the #6 FBS conference right now.

Being in the best conference possible is always the goal, even if you suck in that conference. Just ask Northwestern and Vanderbilt, and how long as the A-10 fans been trying to get rid of Fordham and LaSalle?

Temple ain't going back.

UMass should join the new big east. That's really what I think the next NE move will be because the NBE has tiny fanbases a it will have a content and viewership problem when its deal runs out. Besides, I'm pretty certain the pro rata that UConn got would extend to UMass as well.

After watching the UConn-UMass fun this last week, it seems like those teams are a pair.

Yeah what's up with the troll thread? Temple is in the AAC, and has won a conference championship. This thread would make sense if they were stinking up the MAC or something.

Temple has had a couple of rough years, mostly due to performing well enough in the AAC to have their coaches poached. It's an occupational hazard in our league, and a problem I only hope my team has sometime soon.

Honestly believe the Big East should sponsor football at the FBS level with UConn, Villanova, Buffalo (move to A-10), Temple (A-10), Navy, Army, UMass, Memphis (full Big East membership).

I have a hard time believing that this would be better for all schools involved.

The NBE thinks you need to be good at basketball to be invited.

If their standards are too high for Dayton to meet, then UMass has no chance.

Troll much? Temple is just fine and they have the best of both worlds in the AAC. They have a poor football coach right now. Here are the coaches they've had prior to Rod Carey who all left for bigger money programs due to having success at Temple...

What happens when Cincinnati and UCF leave the AAC? Also, how's Temple's men's basketball team now? Hardly qualifies as "just fine". Last time they made the round of 64 was 2016.

What does that have to do with changing to a lower tier confernence in both sports? Not to mention way less conference money in the coffers. Temple is no UConn. They value football and hoops. The AAC fits that bill for them. They're fine where they are. A Temple fan did not make the OP.

After Cincinnati and UCF (and Houston) leave the AAC, the Sun Belt, C-USA, and MAC might not be "lower tier conferences" depending on who replaces them.

I was referring to the CAA and A-10. That's what the OP is suggesting/trolling.
