I thought I was gonna like the Randy Newman thing, but that was before the drumming we took in the third quarter sapped all the energy from the stadium. It was a complete eyeroll. But it would have sucked almost as bad in the middle of a tense game.

As a wrap up a win, fine. Let the band lead it even. .... But not during the game, please, ever again.

Agreed, I’d rather have the band play that tune at the end of a win with the lyrics on the screen than the original version.

It will be difficult to start a sing-a-long with a crowd with that Randy Newman song. If they absolute want to have that song, let it be AFTER a win.

Part of the issue with the song is that about 70% of the crowd was already gone by the time it started. Spitting rain and a blowout sent a bunch of casual viewers home early

That song was going to bomb even if we were up 30-3 and the stadium was soldout.
It's a weirdly paced/performed song that 80% of the people at the game hadn't heard until that moment.

It felt forced...because it was. It would have felt that way even without the other crappy circumstances. The UAB Dentistry Smile Cam is a better "tradition" than whatever this was trying to be.

Can't be any worse than when they tried to get people to sing Seven Bridges Road after Legion games. That didn't last long.

You know, it's actually OK to have an opinion. It's the only way to effect positive change

Why does it have to be Birmingham though, hell, just do "Alabama Pines" by Jason Isbell

We could just do a Sam Hunt song too, something that is newer and many people are at least aware of. I never heard that Birmingham song before in my life, and I had to figure out where I knew Randy Newman from.(children’s movies by the way)

Sweet Caroline has nothing to do with Boston, we don’t have to force something that doesn’t work and isn’t popular. Based on this board and the Facebook group that Birmingham song is approved by less than half the fan base.

I mainly known Randy Newman from Toy Story.

Agreed, something from Sam Hunt or Jason Isbell "Alabama Pines" would be much better choices. The Birmingham song is a terrible song to start with and not the right fit for a football game.

Ok, this settles it. Birmingham by Newman was bumper music on the Finebaum show for almost the show’s entire run based in Bham. That alone should disqualify it, or else we may be forced to prop up Mike Gottfried as our next head coach.

Out of curiosity, was Ray Watts at the game? I saw Ingram and Hardekopf and then several recognizable boosters (like Craft O’Neal) and then several more in pictures, but no sighting of Watts. I’m sure he was, but you never know.

There was a big game in Tuscaloosa so he may have been down there watching his team.

until someone can verify that he wasn't at the game, I'll assume that he was...BUT...we shouldn't have to assume. there should be no doubt that he was there, b/c he should have been front and center celebrating

fire Ray Watts

I decided a while ago to stop blaming Ray Watts from staying out of the UAB Football spotlight when he's only doing what I want him to.
