Based on the title thread and the list of choices, I believe the thread author means "other than the candidates already mentioned 1,000 ties (UAB, FAU, Rice etc), who else should the AAC consider".

I find some inclusions laughable - like schools that are not competitive where they are and are being mentioned to shore up the AAC (which considers itself a better conference than any they have left to try to take teams from - MAC, SunBelt, C-USA and Independents).

Some said that including lower division schools is a mistake - and I agree selecting from the next division down doesn't give them what they want - a way to regain some level of "#6" in the eyes of college sports fans. I don't think such a combination exists after BoiseSt, SDSU, ColState and AirForce all turned them down. And I doubt they hold on to Navy at this point.

The short answer is they do require some teams so they "should consider" just about anyone - but for image purposes be a little less public about it. It's starting to look ugly when schools turn you down and then your commissioner says basically "well, we didn't actually invite them to join".

One thing people forget is that a school like North Dakota State can play at the level of Cincinnati, UCF, Memphis, SMU and Houston. You can't find those types of schools in the other G5 conferences.

No they can’t. Stop with the NDSU to the AAC IDIOCY

I voted for Army, Louisiana, Marshall, UMass, and other (Rice).

Obviously the AAC should consider Army, but I doubt that’s going to happen.

lol---Liberty's looking pertty good after they spent the weekend spoiling UAB's big stadium christening (a least the stadium held up its end of the deal by looking very nice).

If there was any FCS school that the American should be considering, it's Missouri State. Adding Missouri State removes a lot of temptation for Wichita State to leave, and MSU reasonably connected to the existing footprint. MSU has not been able to maintain enough success in basketball or football, though, to be a viable candidate.

Cincinnati can't be replaced, but Central Florida is a relatively new power so really you could probably slot in any of those options & they could become the next Central Florida.

RE: Army, Louisiana, Buffalo, ASU, NDSU, & the other schools that the AAC should consider
It'd be INSANE to even think of barking up their tree:
- UCONN (they already left; not gonna happen; plus their football SUCKS anyway)
- UMASS (the MAC kicked them out; their BBall goodness is from the 90s, man; their football SUCKS)

Basically I'd say the 6 best to add to try and get 4 out of would be:
- Coastal Carolina
- App State
- Buffalo
- Marshall
- LA Tech
- Louisiana

Army was definitely called and opted out. The rest of the list ranges from "ha ha no" to "wtf, ha-ha-ha-ha rofl rofl OMG I can't believe, ha-ha-ha, no"

"Disband the AAC" isn't a choice, even though it is clearly the best option.

I'm not really familiar with MoState (but I think they used to be more directional - like a SENW Mo State or something - I just don't recall which direction(s)) but there is some potential for schools that have state-wide names - even if no one's ever heard of them or seen them play before. As non-Missourians, we tend to assume a MoState is a bigger opponent than let's say Northern Iowa - even if it isn't true on the field. Also Missouri only has one D-I program in a pretty populated state (2 major league cities but only one major college FB program). That seems a little under-served and therefor may have a lot of up-side potential. I think the name has been kicked around in MAC fan blogs (not sure by any MAC officials).

Similarly, a Univ of Louisiana (fresh off of multiple former names - ULL, SWL, etc) helps their cache too. It doesn't hurt that they also have been on a surge of late in FB and have usually had a good basketball program and have always seemed to have very good softball/baseball. They are also a larger school than La Tech - which has had more notoriety before ULL became Univ of Louisiana. I think they'll be fielding offers - maybe not from the AAC, but from someone.

No FCS school has a chance of being invited to the AAC

North Dakota State have a better record going against P5 schools than UAB. They play like an AAC school with much less.

It really depends. I know North Dakota State has a great FCS football program and a decent market in Fargo with statewide support in a state of over 700,000 total residents, BUT how good is North Dakota State at everything else? I don't know much about them beyond their football program, but I can't imagine the AAC going that far out of their footprint to pull a Sun Belt-type addition if the school potentially could bring the league down in practically every other sport.

Correct about Missouri State. They used to be called Southwest Missouri State. They have reasonably competitive basketball, but their football is unproven at the FCS level to be considered a candidate for a league like the AAC. If you aren't winning FCS national titles in football AND bringing it in other sports with a good market draw, I can't see a conference like the AAC giving that school a look.

I do believe Missouri State could be a really good addition to Conference USA or the Sun Belt if there was a need in either league.

RE: Army, Louisiana, Buffalo, ASU, NDSU, & the other schools that the AAC should c...
Looking at the future AAC:

1. Temple
2. Tulane
3. Tulsa
4. Navy/Wichita State
5. East Carolina
6. SMU
7. South Florida
8. Memphis

Assuming the league adds UAB and then Florida Atlantic as a travel partner to South Florida, I did vote "other" because I don't think it's necessary for the AAC to expand beyond 10. I don't think the AAC needs to add any of those schools listed in the poll.

At this point the AAC could now play split divisions while keeping Tulane and Memphis happily in a western division.

East: Temple, East Carolina, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, UAB

West: Tulsa, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, Navy/Wichita State

And, yes, Navy has gone on the record saying they want to play in a western division of AAC football. I assume it's for recruiting purposes in Texas and Oklahoma.

North Dakota State would be a great add, but it would make more sense for the Mountain West or the MAC, just based on the geography.

FAU could (in theory) emerge as a UCF. Both are big Florida schools located in fast-growing cities in a state with a huge population, lots of high school talent and football crazed. FAU "replaces" UCF.

UAB is somewhat like Cincinnati and Houston. An urban university with a med school that has been competitive in both football and hoops. UAB "replaces," let's say, UC.

Now the AAC needs to "replace" Houston and UConn.

In theory, replacing UConn could be done, somewhat, by adding either UMass or Buffalo (and neither would not be a bad addition in many respects).

So that leaves a replacement for Houston ...

.... Rice, North Texas or UTSA. Keeps the AAC with two universities in Texas.

The problem is there are a lot of schools working the "next UCF" moniker---but few--if any--of them will actually reach that potential. Better to stick with schools a bit further along in the development process. I think for now---the best option is to just get back to 10. UAB seems like a sure thing. Buffalo is the only other school offering high end academics and decent football/basketball athletic performance within the AAC's current eastern replacement pool. If you can secure a commitment from Buffalo to spend in the lower end AAC athletic budget range (50 million +), then I think that's your #10. Stop there for now and see how things shake out between now and 2025 before returning to 12 or 14. There may be renewed interest from those western options at that point.
