Liberty Bowl Thoughts
I am all for what helps the U of M. I'm all for an on campus stadium, etc. But a couple of thoughts. One, the concessions at the Liberty Bowl are far superior to the Fed Ex Forum. So many better options for food, and even the basics like hot dogs, pretzels, burgers, pizza, etc,. are way better. Two, the basic "guts" of the Liberty Bowl (i.e. the inner concourses, concessions, restrooms, etc. are way better at the Liberty Bowl than at Knoxville, Ole Miss, Miss St and many other "major" regional programs. I remember buying a hotdog and canned Coke at Neyland from a lady behind a fold out card table, and I remember seeing "Neon" Leon Mitchell under the end zone stands at Ole Miss and it was like being under the bleachers at a high school stadium. And I remember going to a game in Starkville and buying tickets from a guy who said the tickets were on the Memphis side. The we got our seats and they were in the Miss St student section. We tried to go to the Memphis section, but you had to leave the whole stadium to get to the other side of the stadium. That's almost junior high level. And yes, so we bought two more tickets to get to the other side of the same stadium we had already bought tickets to. [/quote]

Haven't you grasped it yet

The people on this board don't want a stadium that seats 60k---they want a 22k seat stadium ----therefore they can look down their nose on the 40k poor REAL TIGER FANS that can't afford season tickets or donations to the school.

REMEMBER if you have only been going to 1-3 games per year for the last 40 years---because you can;t afford season tickets---then you are not a real fan. ONLY THE DESERVING 25k are worthy of attendance ----the POOR MONEY WISE TIGER fans need to know their place

Somebody took a dump in the brainpan of the self important sports talk jockey who called the Liberty a dump. Watch the coach RS show and tell me that Liberty looks like a dump! She is an asset and a landmark who just needs a new hat (press box), and a little jewelry (more chair backs), and some new shoes (better lighting everywhere); and she will look more like the grand dame she is.

You need to visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium in ATL, AT&T in Dallas, TxA&M at College Station, or any of the newer or renovated stadiums even So AL or the new Birmingham stadium. You will begin to understand what the LBS lacks. And it's not on campus & it's not owned by the university. City & university - separate identity.

Why would you even include the first two in the conversation? Those are billion-dollar domed NFL stadiums. A&M's stadium has been renovated countless times to have the features your refer to...they did not elect to tear it down and build a new one even though with all their money they probably could afford to. LBMS could also be modified to get closer to the standard you are talking about. No, it would not be on campus or university-owned, but are the benefits of owning and moving 2 miles east really worth $200M? That's what this is really all about. Someone has to make that a viable business case, and they never have.

There may be something outlined in the studies mentioned by Harold Byrd in his 2008 column. They’re probably out there somewhere.

The Heery Groupreport stated that such a structure could be funded by stadium-generated revenues alone, in tandem with revenue from the sale of naming rights, from student fees, and from a donor campaign. The study is also comprehensive enough to make provisions for the construction of an alternative, scaled-down stadium, in the cost range of $70 million, to be funded from similar sources.”

—These conclusions were very similar to those arrived at by the HOK architects group, which, in a study commissioned by the city of Memphis, shocked everyone by stating that city and university leaders should build a new stadium at the University of Memphis rather than attempting to build or renovate at the Fairgrounds.

Why? So maybe you'd begin to understand amenity potential that can never economically be a part of the LBS. Even though on a smaller scale than several of the stadiums I mentioned, a new OCS would be night & day more inviting than the LBS. And BTW, you know why TXA&M, UTK, UGA, OM, AR etc, etc renovate their stadiums? Because they are OC, exactly where they want THEIR stadium to be & its something they are more than willing to invest in. LBS meets none of that criteria, it is not owned by the university, it is not located where commercial development could help its location. It is simply an old municipal facility & will never be anything else - it is a liability to our university potential.

The UTexas and Texas A+M systems both receive from the state (and always have) untold amounts of oil revenue taxes that can ONLY be spent on facilities for their university systems.

Both of the flagship schools of those schools will always have shiny boxes and buildings.

How would you account for So AL, UAB/ Birmingham - and every other university in the state of TN?

UAB is off campus in a municipal stadium.

Are we really going to compare the FCS stadiums in this state?

You Liberty Bowl guys need call the Big XII Presidents together and convince them how great the Liberty Bowl is.

We aren't the problem. They are.

Can you do that?

If you can't, then get on the OCS train.

MTSU is not FCS. Birmingham & UAB built a new stadium, Memphis has not & So AL & UAB are not FCS. Neither is NTXSt, UH, UCF. Shall I continue with a long list.

MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM was not the reason that we were not #2 on everybodys list only behind Cindy

That is not the question.

The question is will MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM be the reason we are not selected next time?

The competition at USF is building a brand new stadium.

Do you feel comfortably ahead of USF in the next round?

Do you realize every selected candidate has an OCS (some brand new)?

If this was a video game you would be building the stadium to get to the next level. If you don't play the game well, you'll lose. A stadium is part of this game and it has NOTHING to do with how much we like or dislike Liberty Bowl Stadium.

Wake up.

You are increasingly in the minority with that opinion, not just here but the collective views of B-12 media. BTW, since you have repeated your opinion over & over, please share what the reasons are.

MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM had no and will have no bearing on realignment

An OCS would not have had any bearing nor will have any bearing on realignment

The USF board and Dr. Rudd believe an OCS will have a bearing on the next round of realignment.

Tell us why your opinion is more informed than theirs. I'll listen.
