Money equals impressive facilities. Which in turn makes for a great recruiting tool. They did almost screw it all up early by practicing low academic standards. Some of the football players they recruited didn't care much about the classroom. And they got in trouble also off campus.

So how did low academics fuel a D1 program? Coastal only has about 10,000 students. What were they in 2010? A vision and money is more likely the answer. I’m a firm believer in athletics builds academics. A shining example in state is App State.

Obviously money, but someone had to have a vision of what the school could offer in athletics. Twenty years ago that school was nothing. What they have done with athletics in the past 10 years is incredible.

That is what we should be with regards to football. D1 football and competitive. They have outperformed local counterparts in ODU and Charlotte in regards to football success at the D1 level.

It's really an amazing and unique story. Coastal took a chance on a guy who delivered as a coach and brought in some high powered corporate supporters from his career with TD Ameritrade.

And this coach just made a huge donation recently to help build facilities. This one guy literally built their program himself.

Not to mention the fact that they won the NCAA in baseball and are a power all most every year. They have facilities that are first class and it helps in recruiting with kids . Maybe UNCW should start with baseball and give them what they need ASAP and then do football or basketball ?

They should've have done that 15 years ago. Baseball is one of the most consistent winners at UNCW. Just shows the lack of vision in our athletic department over the years.

I agree with this. My old high school booster club is more competent and successful than what we have going here. You look at the success of schools like Charlotte, Coastal, Campbell, etc... and then look at us. No vision, no direction, no excitement, it's like we're going in reverse. Facilities suck, programs regressing, but glad Bass could bring back Keatts to speak this week at the fund raiser after the way he left us. Such bull****. Also did anyone see the items they were auctioning off? You'd of thought it was a NC State fundraiser instead of one for UNCW. It's amateur hour over there at the Nixon Annex.
