Yeah sounds serious

The city is right to tell the Coyotes to commit to 20 years or kick them out now. Why should they let the Coyotes have the convenience of going year to year in Glendale while they're building a new arena 20 miles away that, if built, will take not only the hockey games but other events away from the Glendale arena?

Is it weird the Coyotes don't share the same arena as the Suns?

They actually did when for a few years when the Jets initially relocated to Arizona to become the Coyotes. However, they quickly found out that the arena where the Suns play isn't configured well for hockey.

They had to remove some seating in the lower bowl to accommodate the playing surface for the NHL which resulted in three sections in the upper tier actually hanging above the ice. Fans in those seats couldn't see up to 1/4 of the ice (including the goal).

The NY Islanders had similar problems when they moved into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Yeah, it was not set up for NHL Hockey. Plus the Suns controlled the arena advertising, parking, etc.

I don't think relocation out of Phoenix to another southern city is in the cards. At least not yet.

If they can get the deal with Tempe ironed out, it will be far more lucrative to play a couple of seasons at Footprint or Veterans then move into their own development vs paying rent in Houston.

In that ESPN article... on the day the Coyotes owner was introduced two years ago, Bettman said he was going to leave Glendale for a new arena. So maybe the question is, why didn't Glendale terminate the team's lease sooner.

The Coyotes' owner doesn't just want to play in a new arena or a new city. Look at what he's asking Tempe to do for him: He wants free land on which to build an "entertainment district" that he alone will own and profit from, and he wants a few hundred million in tax breaks or whatever.

He wants to use the team and a new building as bait for a massive real estate giveaway that will make him a ton of money. Not coincidentally, that is the same thing the A's owner is trying to do in Oakland.

The Coyotes' owner isn't looking to just be a tenant in an arena someplace else. He wants to make money off of the construction of an arena and surrounding real estate development.

And maybe that's financially the right move for a team owner. A few examples just in California:

The Golden State Warriors franchise is, according to those estimates we see, worth almost ten times as much as the current owners paid for it, due partly to winning three NBA titles but due at least as much to building and owning a brand new arena in San Francisco.

The LA Clippers owner apparently thinks that's also the way to go, because he is building a new arena near the Rams new stadium.

The former owner of the San Diego Padres developed a lot of valuable land near Petco Park when it was built, and his real estate company is still profiting from that even though he sold the team several years ago at a price that went way up because the team had a brand new ballpark.

Considering all the new guys coming in, the Hurricanes looked good at home in preseason game 1. @ Tampa Friday, look to see if we can do the same at their place but I am sure both teams are still in the testing the waters with players phase of the preseason.

Bettman seems to love expansion lately. Why move the Coyotoes & not just expand to 34?

Vegas uncharacteristically slow start, and at 1-4 have only beaten the Kracken. Lehner not doing too well as the No 1 so far. Problems with the offense, hangover from the issues in the playoffs.
So...turning to Marc-Andre Fleury, how's he doing with the Blackhawks? He's 0-4, and their team is 0-5 overall. So, it's been about more than just goaltending for the Golden Knights.

Thumbs up to the Kraken for their new tradition....though they could use a longer toss to hit the rows further up. Also have to say the Kraken's new unis are some of the best ever...extrememly tasteful and eye-pleasing design. Kudios to the Kraken.
