Monday Musings Massachusetts edition
Hope the Wisconsin direct deposit hit this week. That was ugly, here are the musings.
Our offense appears to be regressing. Time to get right at Mcgwirk?
Has anyone looked at the ambiguity of the coaching titles of our coaching staff? Lots of co-coordinator titles. C must really like his guys but whose in charge and whose on first?
I see Bullough is back too as an "analyst" That would be a boring job to watch film 20 hours a day and not "coach"
Nice pick 6 by David Carter, wish his high school teammate was our QB.
We really need a fg for my preseason prediction of the Wisconsin game to be spot on..

Dear Friends,
Didn't Wisconsin have their first team in for the entire game? I'm not saying they should have felt sorry for us, but don't most teams when up by almost thirty points going into the fourth quarter, do some subbing?
Personally, I think they wanted to pour it on, and beat the spread.

Question can college players bet on their own games?

Wisconsin played 3 RB in the first quarter! They took it very easy on us..........They could've won 70-0 easily if they wanted! They played multiple QB, they played their 2nd and 3rd string WR as well! It was A horrible match-up for us! Cryst was very classy to win only 34-7! I don't think we had 100 yds total on offense! They rushed alone for over 350 yds! Wisconsin is the 2nd best team on paper in the Big 10! Ohio St is 1st, Iowa and Penn St aren't far behind!

NO!!! they and college athletic personnel can't bet at all on any sports.

Dear EMUGLORYDAYSthe90's,
I can't argue with what you are saying about their personnel, because I didn't see the game. However, what about their offensive and defensive personnel other then whom you have mentioned? Specifically, their linemen.

Using an example, one of our FB broadcasters can't even bet on a UofM game.

UMass gets no respect. St. Francis gets no respect.

Obviously, this is why everyone is concerned! Looked terrible the 2nd half versus St Francis, embarrassed against Wisconsin, and Umass out gained us yesterday! The next 9 games, every team we play is better! We should beat Texas State at home though! I really thought with this very weak/easy schedule, 8-4 was a real possibility! But, after 3 weeks, and getting blown off the football, and are inability to stop the run, I'm saying 6-6, and maybe 5-7! If all starts at the top, CC isn't a great coach, he's a great leader! He recruits good young men, and they graduate, and that's the most important thing! If somehow the DL and LB improve then 8-4 is a real possibility! But, Umass isn't a very good team, and they rolled up 519 yds against us! Toledo, Ball St, W Michigan, C Michigan, Miami Ohio are all significantly better! Ohio U, and N Illinois are not much better! My two cents!

That's true.

We did what we needed to do vs. St. Francis and UMass and people get all worried...

My view: Me worry. Why? After 3 games I still do not know how good this team is or isn't.

I'm guilty of being overly upset with some things. Particularly the "bend-don't-break" defensive philosophy that CC and Neathery have. I am happy that we are 2-1 which I and many others predicted so we have to be happy with that but its hard to not raise an eyebrow to 500 yards from UMass.

Why we struggle defensively......
The key is better LB play. We have undersized LB's that get easily washed out from offensive linemen getting to the second level and they aren't big enough to shed a block, nor are they fast enough to play in coverage. This is why we struggle. This can be overcome in 2 ways....
1. Get QB pressures (we have not recruited athletic D.E.'s who can bend and do this)
2. Blitz (rare we do this)

So....I am coming to terms until we get better talent defensively that we will have to be a bend-dont-break defense. The issue is that we have not shown we can air it out and overcome this style and lack of defense. We have O N E receiving TD on the season. Yikes. I think we (including me) thought we could easily overcome our deficiencies on offense but we havent shown that yet. Hoping we can this Saturday.

What do you guys think?

I think the defense allows a lot of yards in garbage time. Looks bad on paper. Keep forcing turnovers and you can allow all the yards in the world.

If you look at the turnover in the passing game (QB, WR) itll take a minute for those guys to gel. I will say this - i thought there would be more TE play this year.
