SMU is a good defensive-focused team as well. They come in at 3-1, with their lone loss at 2-1 overtime defeat at Baylor. They beat Oklahoma State.

Still scoreless at 36 minute mark of first half, but SMU has really poured it on in our zone the past 10 minutes. Shots and SOG are even, but USM has dominated play the past 10 minutes. They just hit the crossbar on a shot.

Rice had a good final several minutes of the half, but it ends scoreless.

Rice has one more shot (9 vs. 8), one more shot on goal (4 vs. 3) and one more corner kick (2 vs. 1)

Oh, we're also up 9 vs. 1 in fouls (2 yellow cards vs. 1; 1 red card vs. 0)

Halfway through the 2H we're still scoreless @ 67:33 mark. Can't say I'm surprised.

We had yet another corner with 5 seconds left, but it wasn't meant to be. Rice loses it's first match of season, despite having 8 shots on goal (vs. 5) and 7 corners (vs. 2).

Just for context, Rice played with 10 players vs. SMU's 11 for the last 36+ minutes after the red card. I didn't see the game at all, but Brian Lee was still very positive this morning:

"One of my favorite performances since we arrived on Main. Dealt with adversity professionally, competed hard down a player against a good team, dared greatly to keep flying forward and got the equalizer late [ed note: it was disallowed for a handball]. If that’s who we are becoming, the best is surely yet to come."

SMU beat Oklahoma St and took Baylor to overtime, so it's definitely a good sign we were able to generate more chances in this game than against Texas.

Obviously, conference play will be the primary way this team is judged, but non-conference results were more than respectable. We were never a top-15 team, no matter what the coaches' poll (which was mostly based off last year's NCAAs) said.
