Appy is great program and everyone would love a road trip to ski country but their addition undercuts ECU and they bring a real small market. Southern Miss is in the same boat. They deserve to be in the American but it isn’t happening for them.
Nope. They'd help ECU. Rivalries (competition) forces you to get better. We've never had a true conference rival where we actually knew fans of the other programs. No offense to UCF, Marshall or USM but I can count on one hand the number of grads of those schools I've met in NC combined. In NC lots of people knows an App and/or ECU fan.

I don't think they'd help. ECU's issues aren't a lack of conference rivals, those have never truly existed since the SOCON days and ECU's had plenty of runs of being good. ECU's problems are completely self inflicted. Now I don't know how much adding them hurts ECU, I'd say minimal to none, so if adding them were a slam dunk no doubt decision that made everyone more money then I'd be all in on adding them. There's no evidence of that being true, if there were home run additions in the east the AAC wouldn't have sat at 11 for almost 2 years. Probably helps ECU more to have them not in the AAC since I suspect it's going to be very hard to get the ACC schools to come back for OOC games and they'd make sense as a regular regional OOC rivalry.

I'll go on record saying that there are a ton of teams that have been thrown around that I like less than App State as a new member. It would be nice to have a closer team in conference. If the MWC Western hub thing, if it's even being worked on, falls apart, App would be near the top of backup choices for my own selfish reasons.

RE: AAC Timetable
So based on East Carolina’s fan base feedback they seem to be in favor for App State as future conference mate.

I’ll definitely watch a East Carolina vs App State matchup but East Carolina has to get back on the football saddle before they fall further back.

I don't think I'd go making that assumption that there is mass ECU fan base support for that. My wild guess just based on the stuff I've seen is about 1/3 would be in favor of it, 1/3 would be revolted beyond belief by the idea of it, and 1/3 would fall into the category with me of being like meh if it is the best move financially for the league then whatever. However, the fan bases opinion on it matters basically zero it's what leadership thinks. If Holland was still AD I'd have the odds at 100% ECU would support them. Been a long time since he's been AD and his regional fantasies were not super popular with the "big money" (by ECU standards not by real standards these people suck and should be shot into the sun) people that pushed him out the door, so I dunno I'd put the odds at 50/50.

The part about scheduling them OOC doesn't really make sense. We can schedule other schools OOC as well. We need an actual rival in conference. The only program we've played more times than App State is USM. Both programs would be helped getting more exposure on the other side of Raleigh.

If we are not able to add any programs from or merge with the MWC, we should add App, Marshall, UAB and Louisiana (who has more upside than La Tech).

Just my two cents.

RE: AAC Timetable
Here is a nice summary article of where we are at now with the AAC from The Athletic (paywall). No real news but interesting read for his opinion and assessment
https://theathletic.com/2826426/2021/09/...roup-of-5/

Chris Vannini lists specific schools as AAC options (I'm guessing in no particular order)
App St & Louisiana
UAB
Liberty
JMU
Marshall
Charlotte
Georgia St
UTSA
ODU
Southern Miss
Rice
North Texas
FAU
Boise/SDSU/Colorado St/Air Force (Western Wing)

It really feels like the AAC is doesn't know what to do
Which option will results in the most money/least reduction of current money?
Is the Western Wing even a realistic option?

OF NOTE: Army was not even mentioned as an option which was surprising for an opinion colum

…a lot of the same being said and not a lot of insight into what the AAC presidents may actually do.

Seems like a lot of writers are being told to write something.

Unlike the B12 there aren't a collection of obvious options that had separated themselves from the pack (except for the western wing which as always seems insanely unlikely). I've actually become more and more convinced Buffalo makes the most sense with UAB, but the geography is kinda wonky. There's no keeping AAC football as strong as it is currently, but I don't think you want to add schools that are likely bottom end of the league, and it's important the AAC remains a consistent multi bid basketball league. UAB and Buffalo are the only non-western adds that I think you could feel reasonably comfortable with being solid in both major sports, in good sized markets, and with the academics that fit with the rest of the league.

They would be an interesting choice.

Will the AAC presidents want to expand the footprint up into Buffalo for a school that would be a risk and not a clear home run

Don't get the insane unlikeliness of Western wing. We're down to 8. We could literally add the entire Mountain division and be at 14. They'd get more money(except Boise who might break even), better timeslots, better matchups (AAC instead of West division), and not a whole lot more travel. Maybe 1-2 East coast trips in conference per year.

Not necessarily pushing for the entire Mountain division, just an example to say that we have room to add a pile of teams that could share divisional (or permanent opponents or whatever) matchups with our Texahoma teams.

There are no clear home runs outside of MWC schools and Army. UAB is a single. In terms of the things I think the AAC cares about (Market, academics, football success, basketball success, facilities/budget) Buffalo is probably the only other eastern choice who doesn't massively fail any of those categories. Every other of the names mentioned gets an F in at least one of those categories and most several.

Adding Buffalo, ODU, Marshall, and UAB would be interesting. If UAB is in the West, then only USF would really be a huge geographic outlier.

If you got Navy to agree to leave the West division, you could set up an AAC North like this with the Buffalo, Philadelphia, Norfolk, and Annapolis/Baltimore metro areas:

And an AAC South like this with the Tampa, Birmingham, Memphis, New Orleans, Dallas, and Tulsa metro areas:

Both schools just got 37k to come to Charlotte to see a Thursday night game. It should be a reason App gets looked at.

What is that, like 32k more than UNCC gets to come to Charlotte?

I could see that become an incredible rival game! Glad to hear ECU fans are for it.

Yep. Let’s base expansion on the last place team’s fanbase’s opinions!

Both schools just got 37k to come to Charlotte to see a Thursday night game. It should be a reason App gets looked at.

What is that, like 32k more than UNCC gets to come to Charlotte?
At least 32k more. Probably 33-34k.

Now that Aresco got rejected by AFA/CSU, it’s obvious any expansion will have to look eastward. Have to figure that App will be high on the list.
