The truth is, we are just gonna have to be okay with it for a while.

2022 @ LSU
2023 @ Georgia
2024 @ Arkansas

The games are not changing and I don't think the approach is either. At least for 3 years.

Bigger payouts, fewer games.

Want to do it the Boise way? Win your conference and then beat the mediocre cartel school's ass in the bowl game.

That approach to OOC may become financially viable if the AAC media rights payout is strong enough

Yeah, can't change those. I do think it's interesting we haven't scheduled our money game beyond 2024 since they're usually scheduled far in advance. I wonder if we may be holding off to see how realignment shakes out to possibly change our approach.

That's definitely a strong consideration. Being the AAC with better television options also matters for getting home and homes or 2-for-1s. People overlook that ADs of these schools have to answer to their own fans.

Imagine the reaction UAB fans would have toward Mark Ingram if he scheduled UAB to do a 2-for-1 at, say, Northern Arizona and then the option for fans to watch that road game was to either go in person, to sit in a miserable old stadium with leaky toilets and the atmosphere of a tomb, or to watch it on stream because it ain't in linear TV. And not even ESPN+, which can at least be easily found. No, you have to dig for something you've never heard of and will never use again except will drive you crazy by spamming your email from signing up, or 5 minutes before kickoff you find out that everything you had to spend an hour looking up, or that free trial you bought and set up was WRONG and now you don't have the game but instead are going to twitter begging for a link.

We'd blow up his inbox.

Now magnify that for a P5 school with thousands more fans. Kansas State fans for example would go ballistic on their AD if he agreed to such a deal.

We'll have better scheduling leverage in a new league with a new stadium. No doubt about that. Will we use that leverage effectively is a different conversation.

And that is a strong "if". I don't see it happening but one can keep your fingers crossed.

Let's do both.

We aint' ready to do it against Georgia. Kinda figuring South Carolina ain't either, or Vandy, or Arkansas, or Kentucky, or ...

We need to get into the American where we're be able to schedule a little better and maybe even get a few of those teams to come to Protective.

And by scheduling, I mean some more reasonable P5 opportunities.

To make the math work on that, to move away from the $1.8 million paydays, it requires fans giving more money and buying more tickets.

Who's in?

Bingo!

Good ideas but that's preaching to the choir here. You can only squeeze your core of fans so much. They've already been asked to do a lot. At some point the fan base must grow in order to grow donations and ticket sales. So that means convincing people that aren't already fans. Winning CUSA games and titles won't get that done. It's up to UAB to win games that change public perception of the program.

This is the truth. Our stadium sits across the street from the SEC office and we sit right in the middle of SEC territory. We can't even get coverage of our games on our local TV or in our city "newspaper" because they are covering SEC schools (other than Bama and Auburn). The only way we increase our legitimacy in these parts is beating somebody THEY deem a worthy opponent. Otherwise we keep our 20,000 dedicated fans and then pick up a few walk-up bystanders every year, if the weather is perfect, and if their team isn't playing on TV.

This goes all the way back to Coach Bartow scheduling Nebraska as our first basketball game. They weren't a basketball power, but he knew there wasn't a basketball mindset here anyway, and people would respect Nebraska because they were a dominant top 3 football program at the time. He understood.

There's a reason why people still celebrate a win over a mediocre LSU team in 2000 more than beating a 17th-ranked conference opponent (East Carolina) by three touchdowns the year before. Did anyone do a painting from the ECU game? I didn't think so.

RE: Frustrated? It’s OK!
Coach Bartow always liked playing football schools from the big conferences because he knew they had more name recognition in these parts than superior basketball schools. The name and perceived quality of the opponent was more important than the actual quality.

This should be pinned at the top of the board!
