RE: Boise and Memphis still on Big 12 radar?
Of course the B12 will have "back-up" possibilities in case there are more departures. Otherwise, the B12 will hold at 12 for the immediate future.

The PAC12 declared they are not expanding.

The BIG, presently, isn't interested in adding Kanas or Iowa State.

The SEC is not showing any interest in adding other B12 schools beyond OU and Texas. The SEC may look eastward next when the opportunity opens years down the road.

Attitudes can change in a flash with certain activating events. Otherwise, the B12 strategically picked their new four, hoping it settles well in place for awhile.

SMU, Memphis, USF, BSU, etc. have to wait for the next opportunity for considerations, wherever they may be.
Solid "success" by any of them going forward, means staying in the hunt.

May already have been noted:

USF “announced” intentions to build an on-campus stadium. Seems like too little too late and I’m not confident it isn’t more than a hailmary hope than an actual plan.

It’s more than a hope, but less than a plan. I think they will get it done… eventually.

I’ll estimate they play their first game in the OCS in 2027.

Pod 1: USF, UCF, UC, WVU
Pod 2: Baylor, TTech, TCU, Houston
Pod 3: ISU OSU KU KSU
Pod 4: Memphis, SMU, BYU, Boise St/Zags (or CSU all sports)

Best possible setup. Best BBall conference. Wouldn’t take Boise football without Zags.

RE: Boise and Memphis still on Big 12 radar?
Interesting article. Don't know that I believe it, but it claims Big 12 almost stopped at 11, leaving out Houston:

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-s...451474.php

"...Is UH in the Big 12 without Fertitta?

“The short answer is no. No,” said Pezman, dragging out the last word for emphasis.

Then the AD recalled a mission-critical moment when UH’s athletic future was on the line and there was only one person who possessed the power to turn bad news into good news.

“Toward the end, when it felt like we needed to fire bullets politically, that’s the guy (Fertitta) that’s got — he had our back,” Pezman said. “A couple weeks ago, I wasn’t sure it was going our way. I called (Fertitta) at like 9 o’clock on a Sunday night and it was a moment of abject terror because I’m like, ‘We’ve fired a lot of bullets.’ The next morning, he was grinding through it.

“There was a couple really high political people in the state, that you can imagine, and he just made it happen. He was very clear about how it would affect him and his perceived leadership of the university. … It certainly didn’t hurt having a guy like him that can make those phone calls and be able to get those calls answered. I can’t...."”

BSU has had a lot better program, although that can change. Also, I think part of the value of the next contract is weekday games and even late night starts. BSU allows for late night content.

They weren't stopping at 11. That makes zero sense.

Personally, I agree USF is the better add, BUT I can see Boise.

You can’t just say what they’ve done in the past doesn’t matter. The B12 has a perception problem going forward. Boise helps that, USF not only doesn’t but it may hurt as they’ve been bad in football lately.

Boise as a city is growing rapidly though USF is a better market. Does the B12 need USF now that they have UCF? Redundant/discount UCF vs a new market? I’d think USF would be a positive for Oly sports, but Boise is similar with BYU.

Haven’t seen the Temple owls mentioned. I’d imagine they tick all the boxes USF ticks, if not more.

My list of XII expansion candidates between 12 schools (after Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC):
13. Memphis
14. South Florida
15. SMU
16. Temple
17. Boise St
18. Colorado St

Colorado State and Temple were not on the list this time. I do think Academic was the decider for Houston and UCF over Boise State and Memphis. South Florida was beaten out by recent performances of the other schools. Rice and Tulane were quietly dropped from the 2016 list, as merely there for show; even KU and Iowa State acknowledged that.

But I think your list a reasonable for some future date. But like 2021 to 2016, the composition of the list in say 2030 will likely be different reflecting the changes. Close is still no cigar.

The schools left off have to plot their course to remain on the list the next time there is a chance.

If you guys are right about Memphis, they'll have to wait 27 months from declaration. So either they will be willing to overpay or else who is going to help them pay for it?

Doubt SMU gets in unless TCU is leaving.

You might do the best job I've ever seen on this board (and I've been reading it for about 10 years) of not pimping your school.

Full props.

I agree that no one should discount Boise State.

To the extent that anyone has an identifiable football brand in the G5 that has any material TV value at this point, it's them.

The Big 12 could also argue that they have the 2 most valuable schools that aren't located in the Eastern/Central Time Zones and aren't in the Pac-12 with BYU and Boise State. That gives the league a late night window during most weeks of the season to sell as a part of their TV packages. (I think that this is much more meaningful for the Big 12 compared to, say, the Pac-12 wanting random Central Time Zone teams.)

Now, that's not to say that I really think that the Big 12 will expand further at the end, but in the event that they do, then Boise State would be very high (if not the top) of the list.

I think it's Memphis and USF.

I don't see Boise - they are just too far away - if Boise had Gonazaga basketball and academics, then yes - but too many downsides -

Adding USF and Memphis means you have 5 schools for an eastern contingent

At 14 - I think we will be division-less with 7 partner schools you play every year -

Everyone's 7 is slightly different

I appreciate that.

I try to be realistic with my schools. Boise’s best hope is the PAC which may come to fruition if the B1G ever raids the PAC. Outside of that, joining any “best of the rest cross-country” conference is risky for a school that is such an outlier in geography and academics. The most obvious risk is the new conference getting poached and Boise being left in a conference that looks geographically horrific with nowhere to go after burning bridges with the MWC.

I wish the MWC was more proactive in growing into the CST with Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita St (non-football). Not that those schools would ever want to join but it would help the conference’s viewership, academic profile, and basketball - and maybe football.
