Cool UT Soccer: 2021
Fall sport season starts tomorrow, August 13 as Rocket Soccer Team plays an exhibition match at home against Michigan State.

The match was originally schedule to be @ East Lansing, but they just announced they are going to play in Toledo instead - 2PM kickoff. Not sure why it was moved. Thought it might be a field issue @ MSU due to recent weather, but it looks like their men's team played yesterday with no issue.

Rockets have a lot - I mean a lot - of new faces this year, but a lot of seniors too. So not sure how the team is gonna look.

In addition to playing MSU now at home, they have an OOC home match scheduled against Illinois on Sep 12. Link to the story detailing their schedule:

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets came away with a 1-1 tie today, @ Cincinnati.

UT took the lead early in the 2nd on a beautiful shot in the upper corner by Ashton Cassel, but after that, they spent the rest of the 2nd just barely hanging on. Inevitably, Cinci got the equalizer off a corner. In OT UT had two really good chances to get the win, but one was thwarted by a great save, and the 2nd was put wide of net.

UT starts out the season 0-0-2, as they also had a 0-0 tie @ Fort Wayne.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets win their home opener, trouncing Detroit Mercy 6-1, to go to 1-0-2 on the season.

Detroit is not good, having lost their 1st two games 4-0 to MSU and 5-1 to WMU, and the announcers reported they had several players out of this match due to COVID protocols. The Rockets didn't look dominating in the 1st, although they did have chances to score. Went into half time up 1-0. They gave up a goal to Detroit early in the 2nd, and it looked kinda shaky there at that point, but after that, they seemed to flip a switch and start actually attacking, spending the vast majority of the rest of the game in the attacking 3rd, and scoring 5 goals in the last 30 minutes.

Rockets got 2 goals from SO Ellie Pool, and goals from 3 different FR Mia Leonetti, Olivia Dault and Chloe Tadolini. The remaining goal from JR Kaitlyn Maciejewski.

Rockets play Dayton at home on Sunday. Dayton is 3-0, having beaten Akron 2-0 and Kent State 5-0. So, that will be a much better test to see how the Rockets are really doing this season.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets win their second straight at home, beating previously undefeated Dayton 1-0.

UT's lone goal came on a beautiful header from freshman Olivia Dault, off a nice corner from Claire Cahalan. Dayton, who had previously beaten Kent and Akron by a total of 7-0 is very skilled, and bigger than UT, but the Rockets played defense very well for the majority of the game, and made the most of their few opportunities on offense. Still got panicky a few times, especially near the end of the game, but Stich Curry drew a red card on one of UD's defenders to put the Rockets up a player for the last 15 minutes, which helped them to close out the win. Rockets called for 7 offsides in the game.

Still not sure what to think about this team for when MAC play comes around, but they are clearly much better than last season's team. They still have 3 or 4 players out injured who were expected to be major contributors too. Announced say they expect to get some of them back shortly.

Rockets next play at Oakland on Thu.

FR Midfielder Olivia Dault named MAC offensive POW, with 2 goals in 2 games.

SO Keeper Emma Boutorwick named MAC defensive POW. It's the 2nd straight week Boutorwick has been named DPOW.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
No video of the game tonight, but UT wins their 3rd straight beating Oakland 1-0.
Lone goal by FR Olivia Dault, who now has a goal in each of the last three games.

So, a win is always good, but hard to tell if this is a good win or not. On one hand, Oakland beat WMU 3-1 in a exhibition match to start the season. But last week Oakland lost to BGSU 6-0, so??? On the other hand, tonight Cincinnati (who UT tied 1-1) beat Ball State 2-1. BG and Ball State should be 2 of the best teams in the MAC along with Buffalo.

Rockets are off for a week until they play Indiana State at home next Friday.

No video tonight, but the Rockets have extended their unbeaten streak by beating Indiana State 1-0. Lone goal from Claire Cahalan, reportedly off a set piece. Rockets dominated the shot totals 17-3 and shots on goal 8-1

Next match will be a huge one, playing Illinois at home on Sunday. Illinois is currently only 3-3, but they recently soundly defeated BG 5-1.

Toledo lost 1-0 to Illinois today. I have seen the Rockets play several times. They have a young and talented team, but they have some trouble scoring goals. Their best player, in my opinion, is the goalkeeper. She kept them in the game today.

This is the same Illinois team that trounced BG 5-1 on Thursday - a BG team that was expected to be one of the top 2-3, if not the best team in the MAC this year.

Rockets played a great game today. Illinois pressed them at times, but the Rockets had several really good opportunities to score, including 1 that the UI keeper made a tremendous save on. Shots were close - 15-10 in Illinois' favor. In the end, the game turned on a questionable call that gave Illinois an indirect free kick in the box, late in the 2nd. Rockets stopped the initial shot, and a second, but a third seeing eye grounder trickled into the corner. Disappointing way to end the game.

At first, I was not impressed with the team when I saw the opening match of the year against Fort Wayne, but they have gotten better and better as the season has progressed. They play with a lot of poise, are not as panicky with the ball in their own end, and aren't getting beaten 1v1 much at all anymore, even though lately they have played much more skilled teams. Yes, they have had some trouble finishing but in general I think they have a good shot at a very good MAC season.

One more OOC tune up against Illinois State. Like BG, Illinois State lost to Illinois 5-1, but they beat both EMU and NIU (neither of which were expected to be top tier MAC teams.) UT was picked to finish 11th in the MAC, and I think they should be able to do a lot better than that.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets are ranked #8 in this weeks United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region Poll
https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings...n-midwest/

I was not familiar with this poll until now. Apparently they have a national poll, along with 8 regional polls. The regionals are confusing (e.g. UT in the Midwest, OSU in the North and Xavier in the East) but apparently they divided up the nation by conference. The Midwest consists of the MAC, BigXII, MVC and Southland. That's a strange group of schools for UT to be in competition with, but oh well. Buffalo the only other ranked MAC team in the region at #4.

I really don't know what to make of this because they have UT's record wrong. It's listed as 3-0-3 on the site, but as of the poll date (9/14) UT's record is 4-1-2, so how did they mess that up? Apparently they had UT at #6 the previous week when they had the correct UT record then of 3-0-2. Strange.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets finish the OOC slate with a 1-0 OT win over Illinois State in Normal, IL.

GW goal on a beautiful shot from distance by Ashton Cassel, shortly after ISU had a player sent off on a questionable red card.

Rockets had the better play most of the game, but as has been the case most of the season, could not find a way to finish. They had one goal called back for offsides. Then, late in the 2nd, the referee awarded UT a penalty - another questionable call it seemed in real time - when Stitch Currie collided extremely hard with the ISU keeper. Rockets could not capitalize though, as the ISU keeper made a nice save on the PK. I was worried about Currie after the collision, as she was staggering around for a minute or so, and strangely the ref did not stop play for the trainer, as he definitely should have done in that case. Fortunately, she stayed in the game, and was the player that drew the red on ISU.

Rockets finish OOC play at 5-1-2, and the Rockets head back to Illinois to open the MAC campaign on Thursday against NIU. NIU is 3-5, and lost to ISU 4-2. One other common opponent is Indiana State who lost to both UT (1-0) and NIU (2-1 in OT)

No (free) stream of tonight's game, but the Rockets opened MAC play with a 3-0 win @ NIU. Looks like Rockets dominated the game, as the shots were 18-2. UT goals from Stitch Currie, Olivia Dault (her 4th of the season) and Caylee Jozefov. Rockets next match on Sunday hosting WMU. WMU lost to BG, 2-0 today.

Also interesting that pre-season MAC favorite Buffalo lost to Ohio today, 2-1.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets keep winning, defeating WMU 2-0 this afternoon at Hotmer. 1st half goal from Grace Turski (her 1st ever) on a beautiful feed from Caylee Josefov, and the Rockets added insurance in the 2nd on tap-in goal off the chest by Ellie Pool.

WMU had a couple brief good stretches, but the Rockets dominated most of the game. Rockets had another goal called back, on some call that wasn't exactly clear, maybe offside, but it didn't look offside. Shots were 18-9 and the Rockets could easily have scored 5 or 6. Rockets are 2-0 in the MAC and 7-1-2 overall. They haven't given up a goal in 3 games, and only 3 all season. They are also starting to get some of their injured players back, including 6th-year senior Alex Troy and maybe their most talented striker "Mojo" Medalle who are both being worked into the lineup gradually. This is beginning to look like it could be a very fun season - fingers crossed.

On top of that, the rest of the MAC seems to be in a bit of chaos, as pre-season fav Buffalo tied with Kent today, they are now 0-1-1, and another potential favorite, BGSU lost to NIU today - the same NIU team the Rockets defeated 3-0 on Thursday. In that game, BG out-shot NIU an incredible 28-8, but still managed to lose somehow.

The Olympic/Non-Revenues have really been stepping up this season. This is why you give coaches a chance, instead of pulling the trigger quickly when results aren't great early.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Checked the NCAA stats today, and the Rockets are currently:
4th in the nation in goals against
5th in save percentage
8th in percentage of games resulting in shutouts.
This, despite their starting back line includes 1 true freshmen (McKenna Schultz) and one freshman transfer from Illinois State (Sissy Novak), and a Covid-freshman keeper in Emma Boutorwick. Scoring offense is not as good, at 118th, but that's still good for 4th in the MAC, behind Buffalo, Kent and BG.

Their strength of schedule has not been strong so far, having only played 2 teams with RPIs in the top 100 (#58 Cinci, who they tied, and #63 Illinois who they lost to 1-0). So, still remains to be seen how they will perform when they start playing some of the better MAC teams (like #78 Buffalo, #110 Ball State, and #134 BG.) UT's RPI is 142. Still, this is the best this team has looked in quite a long while. Other than the surprise MAC championship team in 2017, you have to go back to 2011 for a team with this kind of record. And given the youth (they also start two other true freshmen, and some sophomores) the next few seasons look bright.

Next team up is Kent at home. Flashes and Rockets have 2 common opponents - #243 Oakland (both wins) and #157 Dayton (Rockets won 1-0, Kent lost 5-0). But, Kent seems to have been playing better of late, having tied Buffalo last week.

RE: UT Soccer: 2021
Rockets lose to Kent tonight 2-1 in OT. FR Olivia Dault got the Rockets' lone goal early in the 2nd to tie the game 1-1 at that point. Dault now has a team-leading 5 goals on the season.

Shots were pretty even, and although the Rockets had opportunities, Kent had the better play for most of the game, putting way more pressure on the UT defense than in any of the other games I have watched. The young Rockets D had just too many breakdowns. GK Boutorwick cleaned up several of the mistakes, but in the end there was 1 too many breakdowns and Kent scored in the 1st OT.

Rockets play @ OU on Sunday. OU had a scoreless tie with BG today, and are now 2-0-1 in the MAC.
