This Board’s Ability to Judge Talent
Cole Johnson has become one of the best pure pocket passers in JMU history. He is extremely football intelligent and has one of the best deep ball threats we have ever had. Coach Cig’s confidence in him is sky high and he has nothing but high praise for him.

Those who have consistently said he was just adequate should be eating their words.

This kid can play and I think will rank right up there with our all time greats

I’d fix that in the thread title if I could!

RE: This Board’s Ability to Judge Takent
I wasn't sure he'd be more than a solid backup before the spring, but his last few games in the playoffs showed real talent and he's continued that in the fall. I want to see how he does next week but I'm thinking he is every bit as good (with potential to be better) as Dinucci and Schor were. Let's hope he stays healthy and on point.

I have been saying for a while that Cole is takented enough to be drafted into the NFL. I believe that. He reminds me a lot of Joe Flacco, who did pretty well for himself.

You're right BSKB! I've been one of his supporters from the beginning. He's poised to have perhaps the greatest passing season in JMU history. Even after this evening's game, someone posted on the game thread that they're not a big fan of his. Ridiculous! He'll be on an NFL roster and people will still be doubting him.

It’s time for this fan base to get behind him big time.

RE: This Board’s Ability to Judge Takent
I think it is too early to anoint him. His career has been a mixed bag, but today was outstanding. I’ve been trying to think of another passing half that was better than his first half, but I can’t.
16-19 300 yards and 3 TD’s. The best throw IMO was the first TD when he hid TE Noah in stride while standing in pocket and taking a big hit from the LB. play action was deadly against a Maine defense built to stop the run.

The litmus test will be can he avoid turnovers and get better in that department this year.
Coming into the season he had 17 TD’s and 13 INT’s. Not great

So far in 2021, 9 TD’s and zero INT’s. Maine is a legit FCS defense . Morehead state is a stats padder especially when you mercilessly play starters into the 4th quarter.
The next stretch of 5 games will define Cojo’s legacy.
4 games on the road. 4 of the 5 are ranked FCS.
@ #10 Weber State
@ New Hampshire
#12 Villanova
@ #25 Richmond
@ #6 Delaware

Poise and 6th year senior experience should pay huge dividends in the toughest part of JMU’s schedule. We can expect performance to come down, but that is okay as long turnovers are minimized. We won’t be seeing any 55-7 games in the upcoming games.

See, this is exactly what I am talking about. He still hasn't proven himself to you, Mike? Start promoting him for first team All CAA, All FCS, Offensive Player of the Year, All America. It is not too early to anoint him. He has the skill set. You can't teach 6'5"!

RE: This Board’s Ability to Judge Talent
I'm more of a Rascati or Landers type guy for college football and really care less about what happens at the next level. Certainly want all Dukes to reach their personal goals, but a tough guy with good decision making abilities is my preference. I like Cole, just doesn't present himself with the image I desire for the Dukes and this is not his flaw but mine.

I think we are underestimating shanahans play calling.

He has been brilliant in his calls and Cojo is executing them to perfection.

You wouldn’t even know we start 4 freshmen on the OLine. Because shanny’s calls and Cojos execution is making that a non-issue so far.

Anyone have a clue as to why the NCAA stats for Cole Johnson have not been updated? They have him at 19th after 2 games with only 298 yards passing and 5 TDs. With yesterday’s performance CJ should be #1 in total yards passing and 9 TDs.

I was one that was excited for Cole to get his shot. I always felt he was a solid passer. That said I was happy he won the starting position last year, and was shocked when he played worse than he did as a freshman. I blamed that on coaching at the time, and still do. He's playing as I expected now. And as I have being saying for the last few years - this is the feel good story I hoped would happen. He was the unsung hero in Houston's first year NC. He could of transferred, but stayed in the hopes of some day leading the Dukes. The offensive line also deserves a lot of credit. They have given him a lot of time for the deep passes.

I think we are seeing what happens when you have six years to get "it". A QB with not only experience but age will always be in the hunt.
