Nothing says P6 like Rice, Army and Air Force.

Navy has another option if they want it.

What’s their other option?
Stay and sing about it?

Navy would be welcome in the ACC in all sports but basketball. It's as simple as that. Navy participates in 3 annual football games that would be of value to the ACCN - Army, ND, and Air Force. Annapolis is locate in MD between DC and Baltimore. Navy as an addition to ACC bowl choices is something that might be of value to the Sun Bowl and Holiday Bowl as well as the Boston, Military, and Pin Stripe bowl.

Then why don't they be the other half of the Notre Dame schedule with the ACC? Notre Dame plays 5 ACC schools and Navy play 5 ACC schools.

Why? Because you are wrong.

If Notre Dame for whatever reason demanded Navy be 16 for them to be all in at 15 then sure Navy would be in the ACC tomorrow. Otherwise no the ACC doesn't want Navy in any way.

ACC with Notre Dame. Only if ND is interested. Their "option" has about a 1% chance of ever happening.

How does that fit their "must play in Texas" needs?

3 of those are taken by Army, Air Force and Notre Dame.

Not if Notre Dame is a division game. That opens up 2 slots so I stand sort of corrected. They shouldn't have much problem getting one each season. That's all they get in the AAC.

Where does the Navy 'must play in Texas' thing come from? Looking at their old independent schedules there were plenty of years where they didn't have a game in Texas.

In 2013 they happened to get a bowl in Texas, but no regularly scheduled games. And then no Texas games in 2012, 2010, 2008, or 2006. I got bored of checking schedules after that

All the service academies should do the same. Army, Navy and Air Force should be playing national schedules. Those programs are a recruiting tool for the Armed Forces. Locking them into a conference is a disservice to College Football.

Navy should attempt to attract Air Force and Army to join them in the AAC. While not the same level of football competition, they bring brands that would be solid replacement for Cincy, UCF, and Houston...and the American branding is spot on - with all three military academies part of the conference.

The AAC can provide the three military academies with national schedules. And, with new OOC openings, they can each fill the gaps as they deem appropriate. Probably get decent bowl game relationships, too.

Air Force isn't joining the AAC. Unlike Navy, all Air Force teams play in the MWC. It makes no sense to travel to AAC locations for the same money. They play Navy every year anyway. Who else would they care about playing in the AAC? Do they really want to split their programs into multiple conferences. Further, AF has long term connections with MWC schools. Plus, AF already told the B12 not to consider them the last time the B12 thought about expanding, since they did not feel they could compete in all sports. So, they seem pretty happy right where they are at. There simply is no good reason for AF to join the AAC.

I don't know how happy Navy and Temple will be if they're left on an island in the mid atlantic, but their schedules now are still overall stronger than they were as an independent.

Navy I could see maybe doing it, Temple is not paying the 10 million buyout to go anywhere else. They don't have the BE to go to like UCONN did. Temple may not love their options or the island they are stuck on, but they are stuck there.

I agree.

If the Big East is a legitimate basketball/all-sports option, then sure, independence could be possible. That's not happening for Temple. The only AAC school where that could even be plausibly explored is Memphis (and that's still highly unlikely).

IMO, Navy should be independent. I've thought that all along. But that's not their opinion, obviously.

So that said, as I never thought their membership in the AAC hinged on UCF, Cincy or Houston, I think they will stay.

This scenario was floated circa 2012 as a tandem of Navy football and Georgetown basketball/other sports to "keep" the DC market. That got shot down quickly.

Navy played in the Oyster Bowl at Foreman Field quite a bit. I wonder if they’d like Old Dominion in the East.

I think Rice or at least another Texas school is the key to keeping Navy. They love playing in the state of Texas every season, particularly for recruiting reasons. Inviting a school located in Texas ensures that, especially if the AAC keeps Navy in the West division. (It doesn’t have to be Rice; it just has to be a school in Texas that plays FBS football.)

Temple wouldn’t survive log-term as an independent. They’d struggle the same way any non-service academy G5 is destined to. Navy isn’t joining the MWC. Navy will have plenty of influence over which schools are added to the AAC. I expect them to stay in the conference for now. If / when the AAC loses another member(s) Navy will reassess.

Well, the Air Force coach has questioned their conference affiliation.

https://gazette.com/sports/air-force-coa...fb6ce.html

Air Force has played New Mexico - MWC conference game - in Texas. They're playing Army in Texas this year and next year.

The big question is what to do with Olympic sports, but I note that half of AFA's Olympic sports travel is to California and Nevada....twice the distance of Wichita, Tulsa, and Dallas from Colorado Springs and further than Memphis and New Orleans.

If the occasional Olympic sports road trips to Philadelphia, Florida and North Carolina are just too much, the WAC would be a good home for AFA's Olympic sports....and more competitive for them.
