RE: GameDay: FB vs. St. Francis (Pa)
While I agree the offense was lackluster, I do think Creighton took this more as a scrimmage. He was committed to sharing QB reps between Hutch and Bryant which hampers their ability to get in rhythm. Also Donnellon went down with an injury in the 1st half, which likely was the reason our OL was less impressive in the 2nd half. Creighton himself also called out our inability to maintain the quick tempo in the 2nd half and said that was partly the reason for the offensive performance.

I honestly was impressed by the D. Consistently getting pressure up front. Strip sack. DBs closing on the ball. And remember, this was with 3 DBs injured and not playing (including LeFleur, our best). Seven of their 15 points came off the muffed punt we gave up in our end of the field. If Beydoun catches that, it's a good chance they only get one touchdown all game. On Thursday if you told me we'd only give up 15 points the whole game and the D forced two turnovers, I would've been pleased.

Overall, the game was never in question. I would've liked to see us win 52-7, but we put them away early and prevented any momentum from building. Most importantly, it was AWESOME to tailgate and attend the game with friends and fellow EMU alums.

I'm with you Frank on the game.

When I look at a game, I check the 1st quarter, half time and 3rd quarter scores to draw a picture of what I think happened.

E.g., 28 - 7 at the half or 21 - 0 in the 2nd quarter would be a solid show by a favored team.

I would not have been happy if it was say 21 - 15 in the 2nd quarter.

The fact remains that St. Francis scored after we had controlled the game and they were never in it.

EMU was in charge nearly the whole game. Our d-line pushed their O-line around. We created turnovers. We played deep into the roster. And we didn’t need MattyIce Sexton to block a punt.

Agree.

Anyway, we went really deep and did not try to maintain our execution. That is typically called 'garbage time.' It is to be expected.

BTW, Howie played early and from what I was able to see was a part of the OL which was pushing St. Francis around and opening holes up the middle.

Alex was scheduled to be in much of the game. He was listed in the media guide as #2 at both Right Guard and Left Guard, and the anticipation was that he would spell Donnellon and Sow quite a bit during the game to keep them fresh. The unfortunate injury to Jake Donnellon gave Alex the chance to play most of the game at RG, including most of the first half.

Sidy Sow did come out in the second half for a few series, at which point Richard Bates came in. Alex and Richard were being swapped between LG and RG for the number of series Sidy was out. I'm sure having two backup guards flipping like that had some impact on the line. That group of five get used to playing together, and when you have two new guards come in during a game and they are flopping from side to side, I'm sure it throws the cohesiveness off some.

I know after the game Alex was excited to have been in for so much of the game, and was already talking about the things he felt he could have done better...things to work on in practice drills. There are some things that you just cannot assess or develop until you've been in an actual game.

16,500 is probably an exaggerated number. But there were a ton cars, tail gates, traffic, etc. Here is a pic of the stands, center home-side has a lot of people.

It was great seeing transfers like evans, stewart and hamilton contributing big time. too bad transfer players are ruining the sport LOL.

I think we're a ground and pound team this year. weve got a fleet of able bodies running backs and a big and deep offensive line. combine that with depth at tight end i see a lot of ball control in our future.

my hope is that we dont get too many injuries in the next couple weeks. I think we're on track for a 3-1 OOC.
Agree with your assessment about the play calling. Here's my problem with it. You have the excitement of a brand new season, big crowd, students are fired up, you kind of owe it to them to give them a fun show to hopefully make them want to come back! You can have fun against a bad opponent without opening up the entire playbook. A little bit of a missed opportunity.

We are, indeed, going to be a strong running team. Were we not short of WRs Friday night?

As far as how to playbook a game vs. an overmatched team:

I think C.C. follows his gut on the following his playbook and less on putting on a show.

Everything I saw was closer to what was good for the team and less about marketing a big show...

Okay but don't complain if they draw 5k for their next home game. I'm sure if he had his druthers, Wetherbee would prefer a show and a W. It would make his job much easier.

PRECISELY!

This was the equivalent of a NFL preseason game. Coach played it close to the vest and certainly did not open up the playbook. I'm certain that due to his massive usage of the roster he gleaned a ton of knowledge about his team's components while our future opponents did not. That is effective coaching!

Frank Anderson and I both were VERY happy with the performance and we actually attended the game unlike the feckless scrooge from Iowa.

Losing 8-7 in the second half to St. Francis really put a damper on the night. I think we can all agree on that. CC has to stop taking his foot off the pedal and quit being so conservative. It is the one aspect of his coaching that he just cannot seem to correct.

Bob, you have the reputation of a 'carnival barker.'

I'm sure C.C. wanted to play as many players as possible. There were only 6 games last season and little opportunity to go deep in the roster. We didn't have a weak FCS opponent to play. All games, obviously, were critical MAC games.

This was a GREAT opportunity to go deep in the roster as we know we have a very experienced 2-deep with all the 'super seniors', etc. making it hard for younger players to break into the 2-deeps or get into the game for positions, like OL, which don't substitute as frequently as say RB, DL, etc.

I hope we can open up a big lead against against another OOC opponent (hopefully UMass????).
