I listed variables that might matter when it comes to the place of college sports in the region and the region's people. Atlanta is a Pro and SEC town. I would rather take an ass whipp'n that drive to Atlanta for any reason. DC is somewhat better but not past the mixing bowl in Arlington. Greensboro is a former mill town, so is Charlotte and so is Durham (part of Raleigh CMSA). Now if you are talking about Dulles and that part of NOVA, what is actually on side of the Potomac that is not in Raleigh other than the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, and CIA HQ?

I get that Phillips is missing Chicago and Greensboro is dull by most any standard. If you are moving to get the ACC away from Duke and UNC control, you will not get that in Charlotte. You have a better chance in Raleigh and perhaps the best chance in DC/NOVA. I don't think we gain by moving to a pro town with pro town media. Consider that the best source of ACC news is found in Richmond via Dave Teel who used to be in Roanoke.

In 30 years the Raleigh CMSA will be the dominate region between Atlanta and DC, something to consider.

You failed to include Wake Forest's med school in the Greensboro CMSA.

No I didn't. And the fact that a private med school is being built there is your damn fault for attempting to monopolize everything. By the way, how close are you taking over ECU's program? 04-cheers

What happens if two Bell Cows of your conference leave? See the Big 12.

Yeah, that would really stink if the ACC lost FSU and Clemson.

Well, we would miss Clemson.03-wink

Well, who knows? Phillips might be doing this because UNC/Duke want to relocate the HQ to somewhere in NC other than Greensboro.

The geographic center of the ACC is in Reidsville, NC, a great little town that is located 21 miles north of Greensboro.

I'm very encouraged by what we're seeing from Phillips so far. I like the alliance to keep ESPN from creating a power 1 structure. I love the alliance to upgrade OOC schedules, something some teams really needed to be forced to do. I love the idea of abandoning Greensboro, which should help purge the Swofford clown show. And bringing Delaney in as a consultant on revenue generation and branding is a great idea and will pay dividends. Is this all too little, too late? Time will tell, but I like what I see.

You don't think there is a "power 1 structure" already?

If ESPN gives the SEC all the best time slots (which the new contract does), best PR push (which it does), double the revenue (which it will), etc. Isn't there a power 1 already?

Here's the financial issue for the alliance. We all knew consolidation of national brands in the coming streaming world, and in prime time network TV, was going to be the main revenue generator. The SEC stands to earn 76.5 million per school for accepting the risk of brand consolidation (the risk being more losses among the leaders).

The alliance doesn't address this matter. Most here probably have not calculated the value ratio of each school to their conferences. I have. Texas and Oklahoma were 56.3% of the total value of the B12. In the new content driven market place they had the largest disparity between conference leaders and the rest of the schools.

Do you know who has the 2nd largest disparity? The Big 10! Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are 47.3% of the Big 10 and Ohio State and Michigan are 36.7% of that. Now when you think about how much money the B10 generates having 2 schools make over a third of that value is staggering and should they ever decide to act in their own self interest as solid as it may seem the Big 10 is they are vulnerable to the same disparity that just imploded the Big 12. And between Michigan and OSU they only have one other in state school between them to worry about. UT and OU had 4.

Washington and Oregon are 26.3% of the PAC 12 which is not only protected by geography but there is only 10% of value difference between #1 and #12.

In the ACC there is only 10% of total value separating #1 and #14. Clemson and Florida State represent 24.7% of your total value with Virginia Tech pulling another 11.7.

In the SEC there is only 2% separating the first 4 positions and 12% separating Alabama from Vanderbilt.

I have 2 points I'm making here:

1. The alliance schedules some key match ups which will impact your revenue by maybe a few games a year, hardly the money maker that would compete with the new SEC.

To do so Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State, Washington, Oregon, U.S.C., and 1 of U.C.L.A./Arizona State would be your conference.

2. The ACC is statistically stable. Bide your time and let the 2nd most top heavy conference weather the content storm.

None of the alliance conferences substantively improve their revenue by doing what they are suggesting they should do. And to make matters even worse they knock themselves in the head by opposing expanded playoffs.

Charlotte is the most UNC/Duke town in NC other than Chapel Hill and Durham. They would be right at home.

Correct. That is why the alliance is significant. It distances is from ESPN and positions us to take our rights to market down the road. In the mean time, ESPN cannot stop paying us for opposing their power 1 vision. We have a contract and they have a fiduciary duty to make the tv rights as profitable as possible for all parties. ESPN already marginalizes the ACC in a myriad of ways (as you rightly noted), so we have nothing to lose on that front.

The more I think about the Alliance, the more it appears to be a means of reigning-in ESPN’s influence on college athletics. Everyone wants ESPN money, but conferences are getting worried how media revenue is now driving (rather than following) the changes..

That claim can only be legitimized if you start winning championships in the sport that accounts for 80% of the tv dollars. Until then, enjoy your wine and cheese while watching your hobby sport.

Hopefully if the ACC moves from Greensboro the ACC Tournament will stop playing in an arena older than me so often. Your footprint has an NBA arena and an NHL arena in North Carolina and you play in the Greensboro dump?

Greensboro seats nearly 24K

PNC in Raleigh and Spectrum in Charlotte seat 19K.

The Smith Center in Chapel Hill seats 21K but it's not useable for mixed crowd where more than a third of the attendees are not regular UNC fans and know how and where to park.

I guess I am one of those dreaded fans of a relatively new member who fails to fully appreciate and acquiesce to the unique history of the ACC. However, I honestly don’t care where the league offices are physically located.

Now, hosting the men’s basketball tournament in Greensboro makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. That’s cheaper than say, New York City or Washington, DC, but it’s also clearly inferior to the old Big East Tournament. Hands-down, no question.

However, even with that, I’m OK with having it in Greensboro every few years. Definitely not as a permanent or majority home, but returning to your roots every so often is fine.

Seems like a waste time of money to give up a headquarters you own to go and buy or rent somewhere where the property values are higher. Strikes me that this is just a way for fat cats in ACC headquarters to give themselves a more posh address.

Obviously, but we will take our 47 team national championships to Clemson's 3. Yeah, yeah... I know but the 3 are in football and that counts more.
