How does the Alliance help the ACC
The Big 10 and Pac have upcoming media negotiations so this guarantee of quality OOC games helps sweeten the pot for them

The ACC does not, so how does this help ACC schools, particularly the 4 that already have in state SEC rivals and a commitment to play Notre Dame every rotation?

2021 is an ACC "look-in" year. All I can say is this better be addressed in that context and not simply "given away" like so many other ACC TV properties in the past (e.g. ACC FCG). This is a test of how good (or not) Commissioner Phillips will be...

RE: How does the Alliance help the ACC
The ACC’s media deal has “look-in” provisions. These look-ins allow for payouts to be adjusted based on the content of the media package. A scheduling Alliance should enhance the quality of content.

It’s the same principle as renegotiating a contract, except that the parties have negotiation rights (i.e., it’s not an open competition, so the base contract carries more weight).

I don't think anyone really knows yet. Perhaps we will know a little more after 2 pm today. At a minimum, it may provide some more entertaining out-of-conference football and basketball games for the fans.

RE: How does the Alliance help the ACC
I think the alliance could speed up conference deregulation. One interesting thing that could come from that the ACC is allowed to include ND as a possible participant in their CCG or even conference semi-finals if CFB goes to that even with only playing 6 games. Maybe they go by winning % for selecting teams since ND has less games.

I hope so. Round-robin divisions are BORING.

No, no, no, NO!!!
Unless the Irish decide to join all-in, there should be NO special provisions made.

I laughed when he said that. This really sounds like a very broad set of ideas and platitudes for the 3 commissioners.

This is almost word for word what Mike Tranghese said back in 2003 when The ACC raided the BE for Miami and VT. Many of the BE schools were trying to get into other leagues as he was saying this. It also reminds me of 2011 when Pitt and SU were invited to the ACC and the other BE schools were scrambling trying to find a lifeboat.

The press conference led to…nothing much. There is no contract. Everyone can continue with their schedules. There are few specifics.

Maybe by meeting with each other, the commissioners are gaining on the skills that Sankey already has. Revenue wise, the Alliance’s start was underwhelming.

The governance issues are still too nebulous to understand. Too many platitudes, not enough talk on actions nor timeframes.

I was reminded of Geraldo Rivera's big reveal of the secret vault of Al Capone. A broken chair, an empty bottle and stale air!

RE: How does the Alliance help the ACC
The alliance can pump the brakes on playoff expansion. This puts pressure on ND to join a conference.

The alliance can demand the CFB Playoff go to open market TV negotiations. This is leverage against ESPN which is currently at a look-in with the ACC. What's that ESPN? You don't want the playoff to go to the open market? Guess you better back that dump truck of cash up to Greensboro, NC. Not next decade. Not in a few years. Not tomorrow. RIGHT NOW.

The alliance can unilaterally dictate the future direction of the future post-NCAA model. I think there's broad consensus between the ACC, B1G, and Pac-12 that academics and sports other than football still matter even if football is driving the bus. The SEC has a radically different take on non-football and academics. So does the Big 12 ... that's why they're not invited, not because of OU/TX, but because collectively their academics is now even worse than the SEC.

The alliance can blow up the March Madness tournament and redesign to fit their desires, radically increasing TV money culling the revenue share net from 360+ teams to roughly 100. Division 1 basketball will split a la FCS/FBS.

The alliance can schedule highly attractive intersectional games between major ranked programs to generate big TV interest and thus TV dollars.

Not if the divisions are geographically tight.

Those are five good ideas. Those are good reasons for an Alliance.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a good feel that the 3 amigos were working on those issues. For example, Kliavkoff first stated that Alliance was not about revenue…and much later backtracked by mentioning that enhanced scheduling would impact revenue. The messages were not crisp nor clear.

The alliance is dead. They had everyone's attention and delivered the equivalent of a public shart with national coverage. Not even their press personnel can praise it. Sorry GTS they wiffed!

And you can't tacitly express support for the NCAA (item 6) and take on the tourney.
And you can't take the recruiting high ground by threatening to use the House to pass legislation capping NIL and bypassing any chance to remove caps on stipends (item 7). And they've alienated any G5 support with the delaying or reducing of playoff expansion slots.

So they not only whiffed but they alienated potential allies and once players figure out the implications of legislation they'll be pissed as well. And the ACC could have avoided all of this and still held ESPN's feet to the fire, and I might add with a greater chance of success than now, by just staying out of it. But NOOOOOO Phillips had to see his buds and take a stand for the cause!

This was extremely epic among a long list of epic fails.

RE: How does the Alliance help the ACC
The alliance press conference pretty much confirmed what every reasonable person concluded it would be. Only those engaged in wild and unrealistic speculation were surprised or disappointed. Really, it only seemed necessarily to have the press conference to get in front of the story once it leaked to prevent the speculation from spinning out of control.

If they get the scheduling component worked out in the future, the big winner will be the fans.

Let me put you in the place of the conference commissioners and ask which of these options you choose:

1) Announce nothing until you have signed contracts in hand. This means you won’t have anything to announce for many months and may not have the full panoply of games and agreements for several years. Meanwhile, there are inevitable rumors which you will be asked about. You also have to deal with anxious fans asking why you’re doing nothing. How do you answer these questions?

2) Announce a general framework now, acknowledging that many details are left to be decided. This means you have to deal with complaints that there’s no real agreement yet, that what has been announced is meaningless.

Option 3- Announce the group is working toward a comprehensive plan to address issues within College Sports. Do an actual press release, not some Zoom meeting. Let anticipation build for the release instead of dropping a giant turd where most will mock you for your attempt.

I was hoping the same but it looks like this alliance thing will turn out to be a big nothingburger.

By the way, if ND plays 6 ACC games, they can technically participate the CCG even under the current NCAA rule. You just need to put ND and six ACC teams which play ND in the same division.
