I got my mom a smokeless ahtray for Christmas. She wasn't too thrilled, but she did use it some. She's long since quit.

Made $1 million in an hour. Guy's my freakin' hero.

Always loved the Opus/Bloom County takes on it,too.

I wonder if Uncle Arnold gave his eulogy? But wait, there's more! Or, now how much would pay?

But seriously, its easy to forget how much of as seen on tv style and salesmanship was created by Ron Popeil. He really created an industry.

Cathy Mitchell is probably my favorite though. I could watch that red headed hawker all night and day lol.

Fame is funny. Some of the informercial "mainstays" become weirdly familiar and somehow comforting to us...knowing they're there always with something new and improved for our perusal.

Childhood hero of mine. Honestly painful for me to think about what happened to him.

I know there was some bitterness within Richard’s family (and maybe Richard, personally) that the Astros did not take his early concerns seriously in the days/weeks leading up to the “big” stroke. But all I’ve read is that the Astros sought out the leading experts in Houston at the time (1980) and they could not detect anything wrong, clinically.

My kid brother was one of his pilots while he was still active coaching and he adored Coach Bowden and his wife and simply proclaimed what great people they were to be around and how they treated everyone around them like family. I knew his son Tommy and shared a Sunday School Class with them. Just real people who never let their positions go to their heads. Most impressive.

Blackhawks Legend Tony Esposito Dies After Battle With Pancreatic Cancer at 78

The hockey world is in mourning again today, as it says goodbye to one of its own. Tony Esposito has passed away at the age of 78 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The Chicago Blackhawks announced the news with a long letter to the Esposito family from team chairman Rocky Wirtz.

Upon his retirement in 1984, Esposito went down as one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play in the NHL. Only 12 men in the history of the game have won the Vezina Trophy at least three times, and Esposito was one of them, taking home the award in 1970, 1972 and 1974. Though he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, he will always be remembered as a member of the Blackhawks. He is the franchise leader in games played, wins, saves, and shutouts. He won the Calder Trophy in 1970 as the league’s best rookie, was a five-time NHL All-Star, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988. He was named to the list of 100 Greatest NHL players in 2017.

It wasn’t just his success, but the flair and style of how Esposito stopped the puck that created so many fans across the hockey world. Though he entered front offices including the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning in retirement, his connection to Chicago was for life. In 2016 at the Winter Classic, it was Esposito who served as coach of the Blackhawks alumni team taking on the St. Louis Blues.

Wow. Another icon dies:

Walter Yetnikoff, fiery record business titan, dies at 81

Walter Yetnikoff (August 11, 1933 – August 8, 2021) was an American music industry executive who was the president of CBS Records International from 1971 to 1975 and then president and CEO of CBS Records from 1975 to 1990. During his career at CBS, he guided the careers of Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Earth, Wind & Fire, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Gloria Estefan, and a host of other well-known artists. During his tenure he attracted stars like James Taylor and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney away from, respectively, Warner Bros. Records and EMI, and went on to preside over the most profitable and prestigious stable of artists of all time. With Yetnikoff at the helm of CBS Records, Michael Jackson's Thriller sold over 40 million copies, Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. sold over 20 million and Billy Joel's The Stranger sold in excess of 13 million. Yetnikoff also helped launched the careers of Lauper (on Portrait Records, which CBS owned), Yankovic (on Scotti Brothers Records, which CBS distributed), and Estefan.

Nanci Caroline Griffith passed away today in Nashville. She was my favorite folk singer writing many of he own songs and capturing well nuances of Texas and the South from my youth. "There's a Light Beyond These Woods, Mary Margaret" was one of my favorites many of you won't know. You've heard her songs as hits by other better known artists but her live performances were an event. She picked a 12 string guitar like a banjo and it was unique and awe inspiring in rhythm. Nanci was beloved as a folk singer in Ireland. I'll miss her energy, how in touch with basic human feelings she was, and the unique perspective of her songs. She was only 68 and a UT woman.

Jeanetta Jones, who many remember as one of the early crew of The Weather Channel has passed away.

Wow. Loved her. So sorry to hear.

She worked at TWC from 1986 to 2006.
Apparently, she was involved in a car accident in 2006 and that contributed to her having to leave her on-camera duties at TWC as it was too much for her to handle after her accident. On Thanksgiving Day in 2006, Jones was involved in a major car accident on the way to work at the Weather Channel. A car had run over a red light and hit the passenger side of her SUV, causing it to overturn several times. According to media reports, her head went through the windshield even though she was buckled up and hit thousands of shards of glass in her face and head. In this accident, she suffered a serious brain injury that left her permanently disabled. She was maried to her husband, Lenny, for 25 years and leaves behind a daughter, Rebecca.

Jeanetta Jones' mic was on live during the entire local forecast that ran on November 2, 1991. You can hear her talk to other colleagues and "complain" about following the same storms all week. You'll notice she said something about the World Series. The previous Sunday nite the Twins had beaten the Braves for the title. It was literally snowing outside the Metrodome during the game. It is fun banter and a classic!

B. Wayne Hughes, Billionaire Founder Of Public Storage, Dies At 87

[Image: The-Hughes-Family.jpg][Image: hawthorne-public-storage-improvements.jp...6C40CCF6F4]

Quote:Bradley Wayne Hughes (September 28, 1933 – August 18, 2021) was an American billionaire businessman, the founder and chairman of Public Storage, the largest self-storage company in the U.S. doing business as a REIT or real estate investment trust. At the time of his death, Hughes has an estimated net worth of US$4.1 billion.

In 1972 B. Wayne Hughes made a $50,000 investment to start what became Public Storage in California and made a fortune giving Americans a place to stash their excess junk.

When Hughes and his business partner Kenneth Volk Jr. were just getting started, they put up a sign on their warehouse that said “Private Storage Spaces.” Seeing that, a customer asked if the storage was available to the public, too. They changed the name of the business to “Public Storage,” and it became a success. The publicly traded company had $3.6 billion in 2020 revenues and has more than 2,500 storage locations around the U.S.

It seems people really need to learn to let go of stuff they don't use. That's a LOT of extra crap we all have. I do realize that some units are used for storing other things for business:

Tom T. Hall wrote/performed a lot of great songs, but that one really is a true masterpiece. #1 on country charts, January ’73.

Hall, by the way, is a great example of how liberals/progressives can be creators of popular entertainment that appeal to virtually everyone. Wish we had more like that nowadays.

RIP.
