Of course, the new coach's dad might be able to do a pretty good job.

Thinking about this more, I think men’s basketball and football need Directors of Player Development as well. I nominate JVG for men’s basketball. For football, I think a certain wide receiver and holder would do nicely.

Alabama football carries about 12 analysts on its staff - never mind all the other directors, etc. that they pay. It's pretty normal, and spreading to all of the other sports.

Here's a rundown on the various names they had in 2019.

https://tdalabamamag.com/2019/10/01/alabama-analysts/

I couldn't quickly find the full list for 2020, but there were 4 former head coaches on the list last year.

Both LSU and Nebraska (Childress) just hired their own Director of Player Development. Smacks of getting around the limit of 2 paid assistant coaches.

I think in the battle of the limited minds at the ncaa thinking up new rules and SEC money figuring out how to get around those rules, I will bet on the SEC money every time.

Hasn't Rice done exactly the same thing with Larry Bragga's position the last few years? I don't see anything new or special with what LSU, Nebraska or Auburn are doing.

Big difference. Bragga's father was really in the role Daniel Watson filled previously-- Head of Baseball Operations. He was basically Bragga's assistant, and at a very low salary. The guys LSU, Nebraska, Auburn and others are hiring are ex-head coaches, at substantial salaries, and who will almost assuredly be integral parts of the coaching staff. It's circumventing the NCAA's limit on 2 paid assistant coaches (which is admittedly as ridiculous as the 11.7 scholarship limit).

Bryan Kirby was Director of Baseball Operations, which was Daniel's role. Bragga's dad was Director of Player Development. He was in the dugout with a clipboard at the games (not in uniform) and would go out to the bullpen when relievers warmed up. I don't know what NCAA rules and restrictions there are for this title, but would not be surprised for SEC schools and other P5 schools with large budgets be able to spend more money for this position. As others have noted, the Alabamas of the world (and others) certainly exploit any loopholes in football.

I really thought that's where Mensa might end up for 2021. But he ended up in a similar position with the Chicago Bears.

Austin Bulman named MVP of Valley Baseball Summer League. Just barely missed out on winning the triple crown (HRs, RBIs, AVG).

Speaking of coaches and their kids, Pat Hallmark's son, Christian (a rising sophomore--Class of 2024), just threw complete game (7 innings) no-hitter to win the semifinal in the Texas Premiere tournament for his age group this weekend: https://twitter.com/texpremier/status/14...19168?s=10

FYI, the "Valley" of that league is the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. (http://pointstreaksites.com/view/valleyl...ews_536773)

The League's history page says it was founded in 1897!! It's Wikipedia page says it started in 1923. Both agree that it started playing by NCAA rules (and was sanctioned by that org) in 1961.

Bostick has apparently created a 2021 Rice Pitchers' Manual and performance tracking app to greet the pitchers when they arrive on campus in a couple weeks, and being bullpen sessions...

YES!!!! Now this is what I'm talking about. I can't begin to express my excitement with this new staff and their approach to development.

This will get you even more excited-- Bostick is outfitting each Rice pitcher with their own arm care package...

Yes it does!!! This is the type of coach and approach I’ve been advocating for since I began commenting on this board. This will be instrumental in attracting quality pitchers in the future after the results are realized. I believe a whole new era of Rice baseball, built on pitching, is upon us.

Who will be the pitching coach? Isnt Bostick just an analytical guy? Also, the Rice Owl app has not been updated with the new baseball coaching staff.
