As a grumpy old man, let me say that I really don't understand why any NFT has any value whatsoever.

But then again, I am a grumpy old man.

BYU just landed a deal for the entire team...all players, even walkons now will be paid the amount to at least cover full tuition. .

Of all possible loopholes I highlighted, this one is uniquely brilliant. They just bumped the NCAA scholarship limit for them from 85 to whatever number they want.

Quote:

According to a school news release, the agreements include “compensation to all members of the team, including compensation to all walk-on players in the amount comparable to the costs of tuition for the academic year.”

“We are excited to partner with BYU and all 123 players on the football team. We are making history together,” said Greer, co-founder of Built Brands, in the release.

Away we go!

And it was immediately taken note of in Eugene and Tuscaloosa and Austin and Columbus. I don't like this at all because it's going mean that the real big boys will respond in kind and go back to stockpiling 150 or 160 players.

Also, this is clearly a direct inducement to attend BYU. There is nothing these walk-ons' NIL brings to the table to justify ANY rational marketing expense of this magnitude.

I said this was going to be a disaster in every imaginable way. This is going to be leveraged to competitive advantage to the nth degree. The NCAA should just disband its compliance office to save $$.

BYU can now effectively have 120 on scholarship if they wish. Like the old days when Alabama and Oklahoma would carry that many and had a JV team.

I don’t impress easily, but this is evil genius level thinking around NCAA corners. SEC boosters are like, “Dayum...you go Mormons!”

I may be way off but as this new era keeps spinning unchecked it would seem some new entity or person [Commissioner of College Football] will have to step up as the NCAA slithers off.

Yep, and if the Cougars can find a booster to do it so can Notre Dame, tOSU, Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, etc.

Thinking this through- what about a sport like baseball where there are only 11.5 scholarships for an entire roster. The powerhouse schools will likely get a booster to pay a full boat for the entire 25 team roster.

You could say the same thing about any collectible item.

Think of this as similar to baseball cards. Then it makes sense.

Basically a way for people to show their fan-dom by giving away their excess money to wealthy capitalists and celebrities.

Oh, when the SEC gets into this game in full swing, it’s going to make even the most unscrupulous blush with what they will get away with. BYU knew this is where things are going with the potential split and they want to be on the correct side of the divide. They will be the trial balloon.

I thought this would be awful all along but I think I may have perhaps undershot the degree of potential awful for programs that don’t want to be relegated to the FCS Majors Division.

It's going to be the Wild West for five or six years. After that, there will be some national "call" to reign things in. At that point, it becomes pure pay for play. A kid at OSU or Alabama gets 100K plus his scholarship to play football for a couple of years before taking his shot at the NFL, while some successor to the NCAA mandates that each school only gets 100 "scholarships" to give out. NFL-Lite...pure minor league. Anywhere between 24 and 48 schools get to play it, and the rest can try and play "old school football" or just give it up entirely.

Actually, I see things going the other way.

At that point, the Presidents of the biggest universities start actually paying attention and realizing that this has nothing to do with their academic institution anymore. They debate cutting athletics loose completely, but ultimately they actually make it a priority to sit down and make a system that is all of the above: a) legal, b) restores the student-athlete concept, and c) restores power to the schools rather than the players.

RE: Ridder NIL Deal
There is a NCAA constitutional convention scheduled to discuss things globally. Rules , admissions and most troubling...divisions are to be addressed. There is going to be a split off where the NCAA allows a contingent to run their own affairs. It’s happening right before our eyes and the NCAA has no choice but to allow it.

The NCAA got gutted like a fish by the SCOTUS decision regarding NIL. They have no power to regulate any of this. In fact, the opinion transfers power previously held by the NCAA...conferences can set their own rules on NIL and other key items if they wish.

As a friend and I were discussing last night, NIL doesn’t just tear up most of the NCAA compliance regs, it is an end around Title IX since the payments are coming directly from private companies and the $$ is not passing through school hands. It’s the biggest sea change in college athletics in our lifetimes.

All of this because poor little Shabazz Napier got the late night munchies and claimed he didn't have any money for a bag of doritos.

They fixed that a while back with the unlimited meals and the cost of attendance allowance. The next thing we heard is we needed to let the Olympic athletes earn a little extra cash by giving swim lessons and what have you. In theory that sounds great in a vacuum, but as Thomas Sowell once said," Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good." These rules were all designed for a reason, and that reason was not so universities can oppress young people, but because once open up the flood gates, you will never be able to shut it off.

I place blame on ESPN. They have been beating this drum louder than anyone for a while now. The system is going to come crashing down, and in the end the money is going to be such that a lot of schools are going to have to shut it all down, and we will wind up with a system were an even smaller number will have better benefits and rewards, but even more will have nothing.

As someone who paid my own way through college, I never felt that the scholarship athletes were all that exploited.

But that's just me.

It is wishful thinking 04-cheers

But I've long thought that the biggest problem in college sports is that university Presidents don't pay any attention to it.

They're running complex multibillion dollar organizations. They don't have the time to oversee a minor division that pays for itself (which it does at the schools that matter). They also lack the inclination; most Presidents are stuck-up nerds that don't want to dabble in athletics.

With no academic oversight, the ADs have been allowed to run amok. But power is ultimately held by the Presidents. They can retake control at any time. But they'll only bother to do so if athletics starts embarrassing the rest of the university.
