Bold Predictions About How Well Your School will Fare In the New WAC
Sports your school will be competitive in next year and the sports your school will not do so well….

ACU. The Wildcats will be immediately competitive in men’s basketball and baseball. Golf and tennis will hold their own. Football? Well, the Cats are replacing all five o linemen and most of the AQ7 will bring back virtually their entire teams…I’m hoping for improvement but this isn’t likely to be our year.

Women’s basketball and soccer will compete right away. Volleyball has struggled but the women’s team picked up three good players from the portal that should help. Softball has has a relatively new coach who has the program headed in the right direction and a grad transfer pitcher from Baylor throws fire.

Once upon a time ACU had world class t/f and cross country teams but that was a lifetime ago. I don’t expect to excel in cross country.

I dunno about either M or W tennis. We probably won’t have the worst teams in the league but not the best either.

Our best chance of winning the conference will probably be baseball or m basketball. Women’s basketball had an off year last year but we have an excellent coach and some good newcomers…so I expect her to have the team ready to compete.

For utrgv I would say baseball would fare the best. Then mens soccer.
Most of the other mens and womens teams are usually middle of the pack or worse. We used to be really good in volleyball but really sucked last year.
Men's basketball will probably be bad. But as is tradition with us year 3 will start to show what the new coach actually wanted.

Oh and chess. We'll dominate in chess.

I know the future soccer program here has had a tryout day where it signed up so quick the coach has to schedule more this semester.

RE: Bold Predictions About How Well Your School will Fare In the New WAC
Our baseball team is always competitive at the conference level and most seasons knocks off a P5 team, that looks like it will continue.

We should be in the top half of the conference in men's and women's soccer, and given the nature of the game there's always a chance of winning the tournament on a few good kicks.

Other than that, not looking bright.

MBB - Let's just hope we don't get humiliated by a D2 or exhibition, and be grateful for any D1 wins at all, no matter who or how.
WBB - It's mainly last year's team minus our best player. On the other hand a lot of mature players. No clue how strong the Texas 4 are in this sport. I'd say breaking even would be a success.
WVB - Just a few years ago we were winning tournaments, taking down NMSU, and upsetting P5s. Then it all went away. Seemed to have no blockers last year. Bottom half unless there's a surprise in the recruits.

I don't follow track, tennis, golf but haven't heard anything leading to high expectations.

Sam Houston

Football, men's and women's Golf will have no problem competing for championship. All three won the SLC last year. These programs are routinely strong and men's golf is a top 20 program in 20-21.

It would be my expectation that baseball should be the top school in the Southwest Division as should the women's tennis program (which won the SLC last year in the regular season before injuries cost them in the league tournament)

Volleyball and softball should be competitive though in particular in volleyball's case, we still have SFA and we'll know everything once that WAC Crossover happens... men's and women's basketball will be middle of the pack in their respective sports. Not top tier, but not bottom either.

College Sports madness has a MBB preview where they rank SHSU as the second best WAC team (#141) with only GCU (#130) ahead of them. Someone out there seems to think SHSU is going to have a good MBB season.

GCU tends to be above average in all of the WAC sponsored sports. Those struggling the most last year were women's soccer and softball. Both have new coaches this year so we shall see if there are any improvements.
GCU should at least contend in all other sports with T&F (Women & Men), MBB, WBB, and baseball being the major strengths.

Coach Cissell is going into his second season. Men's soccer has a new coach.

Lamar probably will not be in the top four of any of the major sports. Best chances are in Men's and Women's tennis and women's soccer. Football is first full season of competition for current head coach and the teams in the WAC-Asun are all tough. Men's basketball new coach so who knows. Women's basketball, 3rd year for current coach and team improved last year, but still lacks adequate size in my opinion.

RE: Bold Predictions About How Well Your School will Fare In the New WAC
Texas Terror introduced the idea of divisional as well as WAC championship contenders, something I didn’t focus on earlier. Here are my bold predictions…

ACU wins the SW division in baseball and basketball….

ACU baseball did well last year during the regular season. The diamond Cats had enough pitching depth to take a short 3/4 game series, but not enough to survive tournament action. Sam and UTRGV are serious contenders as well but ACU returns a lot of talent and I hope a newcomer or two can provide pitching depth.

ACU had an excellent basketball team last year, with an emphasis on team, especially team defense. We’ve been overlooked this year because our HC moved on to greener pastures and bigger bucks. I think critics are wrong to overlook this year’s team. The cats lost two big men but recruited a 7 footer who appears more agile than the man he’s replacing and is a better perimeter shooter. 3 starters and a veteran bench help. SFA and Sam Houston have the talent to overtake ACU, but I’m going with the bold prediction that the SW division belongs to the Cats until proven otherwise. ACU plays both NMSU and GCU on the road…the outcome of these games will give us a good indication of how the Cats will fare come tournament time. Expect a tenacious, opportunistic defense to hold down scoring.

I’m not sure about women’s sports. Soccer. Will be competitive, volleyball and softball will surprise some teams and basketball will inch closer to SFA after a disappointing year in 2020. I’m not predicting any divisional winners here…but with a little luck…..

For Tarleton, we finished fourth in volleyball and second in women’s tennis. So I think we will be strong in both of these as I believe all of our programs and teams will be better this year.

I know we are not getting respect in basketball and football and I get some of it. I think both teams will finish in the top ten in basketball. I think we will compete with SFA for fourth in football.

Agree. Men's Cross Country is another possible chance for the Cardinals. Lamar won the SLC men's cross country title every year from 2010-11 except for 2012-13 and 2020-21 (in 2021). The top 3 for the 2020-21 season were SELA, SFA, and Lamar respectively.

A good question is, who will take over the cellar of the conference all sports once Chicago State is gone?

Based on last year, it would be Tarleton. I suspect Lamar is going to give chase on their way to the bottom. RGV could have a bad year and provide some competition as well. I don't see much other competition for this "honor."

Chicago State was at or near the bottom across all sports with no real bright spots, none of the new or remaining teams are going to be that "consistent". Of course if you award points for each sports ranking some school will end up last, but it's not going to be a huge gap between the last four teams. Also I think Dixie has a chance at "beating" the other three you mentioned.

Well, I only mentioned RGV because of uncertainty about track and cross country. Those are some big point getters for the department, so a dip there could take a big toll. As well as possible MBB rebuilding.

I don't think UTech will be down that low. No women's basketball season because of covid hurt them this year, and I think all of their sports will take a small step forward and keep them out of the biggest loser position. I expect them to have a solid year next year. By the year after that they'll be solid because they have a pretty holistic approach that scores well in the all sports.

Thanks for reminding me about the name change. I was basing it on the fact that we swept UTech in MBB last year and then got swept by Tarleton later in the season. Of course some things happened in between those events that could explain it.
