Most of the football, basketball and baseball pundits think the move will happen no later than the 2023 sports season.

I think it will as well. Perhaps even as early as 2022.

I have the utmost of faith of the Whorns ability to poison the Big XII in its entirety so that they can boogaloo early.

Kind of the same opinion of the fine lady that married a friend, then another friend, and then finally had the kindness to move that on to a complete stranger. It was amazing to see how thorough she could auto-'Beirut' an atmosphere......

Dear Longhorns,
I am sure many of you have been inundated with news and speculation about the future of UT athletics throughout this long week. While I wanted to address the stories sooner than now, I needed to wait for our Board of Regents to weigh in on any conference actions. Today, our Board of Regents met and gave unanimous approval for one of the most monumental moves in our storied history. I am thrilled. It’s official! The University of Texas at Austin will be joining the Southeastern Conference in 2025.

Throughout the week, you have probably heard references to the “changing landscape of collegiate athletics.” Recognizing this reality, and with a commitment to position the university’s tradition of athletics excellence for generations to come, Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife, Athletics Director Chris Del Conte and I made the decision to look beyond the expiration of our current media rights contract with the Big 12. We asked the SEC to consider allowing our historic programs to compete in their unmatched conference. We are honored and grateful that they welcomed us.

During the past quarter of a century, we have enjoyed so many memorable moments in the Big 12. Our players, coaches, and alumni will be forever grateful for the fierce competition and glorious championship moments we experienced with our conference peers.

Looking ahead, I know many will be most excited about the return of time-honored rivalries with the Texas Aggies and the Arkansas Razorbacks, historic series that have given us some of our most exhilarating athletics moments. We will also be able to continue our rivalry with the University of Oklahoma, another key benefit to this transition.

As our Vice President and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte explained, “This will be the best move for our student athletes, as they will be competing on the finest stage in collegiate sports. It will allow them to play in the best time slots on the largest television networks, give them unmatched visibility and prepare them for a potential future in sports beyond UT.”

For now, our programs will focus on competing and winning in the Big 12. When our current contract expires, we will make the transition to the SEC, and I am confident that the level of competition we face in every sport will further inspire all of our sports teams to perform and compete at the highest level. I extend a debt of gratitude to the SEC and to you, Longhorn Nation, as we celebrate some of the most exciting news ever announced from these Forty Acres. Our most exciting sports memories are ahead of us.

Hook 'em!

I doubt they'll actually play out the full grant of rights. I think they'll settle between now and then for an early exit. Nobody on either side can talk about that publicly for fear of giving away the full buyout. UT and OU want the remaining 8 to feel enough pressure about getting left behind in the G5/G6 that they bail on the conference early and forfeit the buyout.* The 8, for their part, want UT and OU out as quick as possible to finalize the buyout precisely so that they can (as much as possible in the circumstances) have their buyout money and move on from the XII.

* The theory of the conspiracy that Bob Bowlsby (XII commissioner) accused ESPN and the American Conference of this week would drive this. It's expected that ESPN's projected massive SEC media rights deal, if they can execute the move early, would include folding the Longhorn Network at ESPN's expense and using that money to pay the conference buyout for both exiting schools (the max buyout is about the same as the LHN payout to UT over the period). ESPN+AAC apparently approached all 8 remaining teams, but if they could get just 4 of them to jump ship, those 4 plus OU and UT could vote 6-4 to end the GoR early without a buyout. ESPN's case would be that they could guarantee to the 4 or so that jumped to the AAC a bonus routed through a disproportionate share of a new AAC media deal that would cover their projected 1/8 share of the full XII OU/UT buyout, so the schools that take the move don't miss out on money, ESPN saves by screwing out the schools that don't take the AAC offer, and ESPN locks up 100% of their games versus splitting 50% with Fox in the XII. To be clear, Bowlsby didn't release the evidence of ESPN wrongdoing that he claims to have, but there's no doubt Disney/ESPN has a lot of motivation to grease the wheels this way. It would both get the bigger SEC media machine up and running sooner, do so at a potentially lower cost, and marginalize Fox even more by pushing them out of Texas.

ESPN even gets close to their mitts in this the intentional interference claim would dwarf Texaco/Pennzoil. I would pay to see ESPN/Horns/OU run into that knife collection.

Look for them to be in the SEC for the 2022 season. It'll happen.

I wouldnt be surprised if it did. The question is to what extent the Whorns will nuke the B12 in order to do it.

And, ESPN has a vested interest to do the same. And if either of them, and perhaps even the SEC, approach anyone except in a very narrowly tailored conversation, the legal fallout could be correspondingly enormous.

Arrogance tends to have many think that they can do so without blowback. And, the Whorns epitomize arrogance in spades.

Kansas is a one-sport school, aren't they? I cannot imagine they are that attractive a candidate for a conference.

If the B1G and PAC decide that they want the scraps left over after the SEC had their pick, there's just not a lot of options. The choices are:

Difficult or impossible to attract: SEC and ACC members

Historically bad at football: Baylor (bonus basketball now), Kansas (bonus basketball forever), Iowa State*

Generally mediocre: Tech, TCU, WVU, Houston, Cincinnati*, UCF, Memphis*

* Decent to good at football at present

RE: Texas and Oklahoma reaching out to SEC
Remember how crushed we were when we didn't make the original XII? If we had only taken care of business then, we might be okay today. Then again, TCU took care of business pretty well, and they are screwed today too. Not to mention Baylor and TT, who made the original XII cut.

I just wonder how TexasU arrogance versus SEC pride will play out. I have said before that I would love to be a fly on the wall in the first SEC meeting when TexasU starts telling Bama and Florida and Georgia and LSU that they are doing it all wrong. My strong advice to SEC members is to squash them immediately, just like they would squash that fly on the wall. Make it very clear to them that TexasU needs the SEC far more than the SEC needs TexasU, so sit down and shut up.

I guess we should know soon if the remaining Big 12 schools plan on sticking together and expanding. I don't think any of them are attractive to the Big 10 or PAC 14.

I don't see why the remaining 8 in the Big 12 just vote to cut the media shares of UT and OU in half (or more). They have the votes to do it, I'd guess. No need to invest in someone that isn't planning on being in the conference long-term. I doubt UT and OU could block that from happening.

That way, you start to get the same thing as the 2 year exit fee from UT and OU, if they really think they're going to stay in the conference through 2025. Probably would force their hand to just leave - and get the exit fees owed (or something close to them in a negotiated settlement).

I'm reading these sad stories from Lubbock and Waco about how this move by Texas and Oklahoma will adversely affect revenues at the respective universities and their cities.

Boo freaking hoo! They had a free ride for more than 2 decades, while Rice, TCU, SMU and Houston got screwed.

The AAC and remaining Big12 should just merge together. I know that's what ESPN wants, but it makes sense for all of those institutions involved, especially if none of them get poached by the PAC12 and Big10. There's security in numbers, and a 19-team conference comprised of those schools could get a decent media deal. The football and basketball would be great for a non-power conference.
