WAC 2021-22 Championship Schedule
On June 9, the WAC competition committee met and several decisions were made concerning the locations for WAC championships. As usual, the men's and women's basketball championships will be held in Las Vegas. But the other sports will be divided equally between schools in the West and Southwest divisions:

West -- M/W XC, Volleyball, Men's golf, outdoor T&F (m/w), Baseball
Southwest - soccer, indoor T&F (m/w), women's golf, m/w tennis, softball

By looking at some of the fall sports schedules that are already posted, I see that NMSU will be hosting volleyball November 18-10 and ACU will be hosting soccer in early November.

Does anyone else on the board have any info on other championship sites? XC starts in late August/early September for all WAC schools, so I imagine that site should show up online soon.

I see that the Southwest region will host the indoor T&F championship and the indoor T&F championship will always be a challenge since no WAC schools have an indoor T&F facility. It would appear to me that the most likely locations for the WAC indoor T&F championship would be renting space at: 1) ABQ Convention Center (Mountain West already has that space leased for three days in late Feb); 2) the Sports Performance Center at Texas Tech (the D2 Lone Star Conf currently rents that space for their meet); or Texas A&M -- but Coach Henry has always resisted renting out that space.

Cal Baptist is hosting XC (that is on the Sam Houston schedule)...

And what's the situation at U of H for their indoor space for indoor T&F in Houston?

Terror, thanks for the info on the XC meet. Not surprising that Cal Baptist will host XC -- they will probably go into the season as the early favorites for the WAC XC title. Of course, they put all of their T&F resources into distance runners only.

Terror, that is a good question about the UH track. They have a unique situation in that the track itself is actually leased to UH -- the space on campus is owned by UH, but the track is owned by a third party. I have heard that the lease does not allow UH to sub-let the space to other schools, but I have never confirmed that with UH coaches. I have also never seen them lease that track out to anyone else. Instead, they host 6-7 meets a year and let anyone come to compete who will pay the fee. While UH would be on the very eastern edge of the WAC footbprint (Beaumont is east of Houston), it is very easy and fairly cheap to fly into Houston. That might be an option.

Is that why the Southland Conference stopped doing their meet at UH a few years back before going to Birmingham (which is not even in the conference footprint?!?!)?.

Re: the other championships, would not surprise me if Lamar hosted the M/W tennis championships. They seemed to always host the Southland and have the facility to do so.

Sam Houston is probably best suited for hosting the softball championships of the Southwest Division schools (and if Lamar & ACU are already hosting one apiece with my proposed tennis and then the soccer championships, that probably helps move things around) to some degree.

The 19-20 WAC women's golf championships were slated for Kerrville, Texas (Riverhill Country Club) which would be in the Southwest region but I wonder if they can do better.

I don't see a listing for Swimming and Diving.

Last year the meet was divided between UNLV (Men's Swimming), St. George (Women's Swimming) and Flagstaff (all diving).

Other years it has been held in Houston and San Antonio

dbackjon, I read on WAC sports that the competition committee was only tasked with setting the championship schedule for the sports above, because the other sports (S&D, beach VB, etc) have a large number of affiliate members and will not be bound by the West/Southwest construct.

I think that either CBU or UVU will be the early favorites.

If the WAC XC championship was being run at UVU, at 4,600 feet, it would certainly help tip the balance toward UVU over CBU, which sits at 800 feet elevation.
