RE: Who will get first paycheck at odu???
I don't get why nobody puts the blame where it belongs. Monarx touched on it above, but the villains here are the pro sports leagues. They are the ones forcing kids who have no interest in academics to go to college before they can start their career. Baseball has a minor league system, it doesn't hurt the product that the NCAA is able to put on the field. The same system in all sports would be much better than forcing college sports to become minor league sports so that the players who don't value an education can get what they feel they deserve. Let the pro leagues worry about mentoring, and training, and paying, and building a brand for those kids, and let college sports remain college sports.

Welcome to Entitled America.

Are you going to college for Academics or Athletics? Scrap all college sports for ***** sake and make it about nothing more than higher education.

IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE, THEYRE GOING TO WANT A GLASS OF MILK.

**** all these so called "Student Athletes".

Mod Edit; don’t bypass the profanity filter.

Go watch Division 3. Virginia Wesleyan and CNU are right down the road. No athletic scholarships. But also no eight-to-nine figure stadiums with seatbacks and luxury suites, no coaches making more money than everyone else at the school, no media deals, almost no merchandising or televised games. Just you and your ass in a bleacher with maybe 1,000 of your closest friends.

If you're OK with that, good for you. But most of the complainers are unrepently in the "capitalism for me, amateurism for thee" camp.

I will say that the fact that you consider student-athletes mice and not integral parts of your college sports experience as a supporter speaks volumes.

My youngest son will be playing junior college soccer this fall. I am paying for everything, including his equipment. But I am happy to do so because it inspires him to do well in school because he has to maintain his grades in order to play. The team plays in a very nice high school stadium because they don’t have their own field. So where do we sign up for all this NIL $$?

The problem is really the NFL. NBA has the G league, but I don’t see players going directly to the G league from high school. College still seems to be main funnel. Baseball has been developing the minor leagues for decades. If there was an NFL minor league, would it be more like baseball or basketball? I hate to say it but it would probably be a fail.

That’s the real kick in the pants. It’s going to be the guys in the high revenue sports who are on a full ride plus that will get most of the money. But hopefully your son can transfer to a D1 soccer power (ODU?) and get a partial ride with some NIL to supplement.

Lol. I entered into a $234K contract 18 years ago when he was conceived. That's how much the USDA says it costs to raise a child from birth to 18. I just extended my contract.

At least the junior college guys don't have to worry about stupid infractions like monetizing a YouTube channel that nobody cares about until they make it to the big leagues.

If the NCAA really wants to prevent student athletes from getting paid, all they have to do is reinstate the "freshmen don't play" rule. Kids who are only in college for the chance to play for the pros would either go straight to the NFL/NBA or the NBA's developmental league. This would weed out those who want to go to college and those who don't.

Just get rid of the role college athletics play in going pro. Let them go pro out of HS or be drafted after earning a degree or formally dropping out of college.

RE: Who will get first paycheck at odu???
Big Blue Monarch has a good idea.

I have been giving this “new development in college athletics” a good deal of thought. Rest assured that “who will get the first paycheck” will be an attorney. What the administration won’t tell you is all of structure that will be required along with the attendant costs to set up that “administrative support system”. I read somewhere recently on these boards that odu will be hiring a social media coordinator to “help” address the self inflicted loss of our men’s and women’s basketball twitter accounts. The list goes on and on. Seriously, the odu’s of the world would be better off first spending the time assessing the real costs to the school...and its donors, in the further participation in such an albatross. I for one think the costs have become too high to “excel” at this level. Better off to play at a level where we truly can be successful, both athletically and financially. I just don’t think this will be well thought out prior to implementation. Another case of fire, aim, ready.

And so it begins. The Alabama QB has earned over One Million in endorsements.

As usual, the rich get richer and ODU will get screwed.

How is this any different from before? The elite players have always gotten paid if they asked for it. Cam Newton, OJ Mayo, Reggie Bush, Eric Dickerson..

The only differences are now it can be written about with full details by the media, the businesses can mark it as a marketing expense and the players will be treated as contracted employees and expected to pay taxes on those earnings.

The bigger question is who will be the first player charged with tax evasion?

Hah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Some kids are about to get learned on taxes real quick.

Hopefully he gets some good consultants, doesn't spend it all, and maybe gets some disability insurance to help secure his future.

Wondering the net effect on team morale and culture. If you thought the transfer portal was already insane, just wait...

I wouldn't take what Nick Saban says during a recruiting trip as gospel

According to reports, Saban told the Texas High School Coaches Association's convention

But that is just it to me, how can Saban go around spouting off to a group of HS coaches about how much his players are making. How is that ethical.

I guess unethical may be the incorrect term. Just seems like it needs to be regulated in some fashion to allow for an even recruiting playing field. Seems sketchy, to me, for a coach like Saban, simply because he is blessed to have boosters that are willing to pump his players up with millions of dollars through endorsements, to be able to announce that to a group of coaches who will then funnel their players to UA. How is that different from the crap Adidas pulled with funneling monies to players to sign with agents and schools to play hoops? Saban is basically doing the same thing, send your players to Alabama and I can get them millions. Maybe no unethical given the current rules, but certainly shady in my mind.\ and it continues to make the recruiting landscape uneven. Now we will start losing players because Saban can legally have some booster give them an endorsement deal. This just all reeks like dead fish to me.

RE: Who will get first paycheck at odu???
Recruiting will never be a level playing field. Look at the facilities/etc that a school can offer. I don't really like that other schools can easily offer way more money than we can (or I should say boosters). But, I don't think its unethical. Its not that different than when I'm recruiting employees and saying how much money they can make.
