Virginia Tech Draws Memphis in NIT Season Tip-Off in November
Virginia Tech fan here. Looks like we're going to have an old Metro match-up in the NIT season tip off this year.

I think this is great! If Tyresse Radford comes back, VT is looking at having their best team in history and we'll get to play Memphis, who is experiencing a resurgence with Penny Hardaway.

We also have old A10 conference rivals Dayton (home and home), Xavier if the NIT works out right, and St. Bonaventure and former ACC foe Maryland on the schedule. VT is doing a rare thing of putting together a quality OOC schedule. Which is great but you still need 20 wins to get in the NCAA tournament even if you have big wins.

VT once beat Memphis while y'all were #1 in the nation. That was a little before my time but I heard about it while I was there. VT didn't have a lot going for them athletically, other than the 1973 NIT championship, and a football team coming off a bowl win, a televised win vs. UVA and, probation; when I got there in 1991. So beating Memphis was still worth talking about years later.

I hope it's a game for the ages with Tech coming out on top of course.

Maybe we'll boo Landers Nolley for leaving us last year.

BTW, Happy Birthday to Penny since his 50th was a few hours ago.

Thanks for stopping by. Many of us youngsters remember that game quite well. We were #1 for maybe ten minutes. 04-chairshot

Metro. Nice! I loved that conference. Lot of good teams. Lot of good battles.

Glad to hear you're primed for a great season. We're anxious to see our guys hit the floor too. College basketball landscape is ever changing and we (like everyone else) have new pieces. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for stopping by. Good luck!

Both of those guys were tough, especially against the Tigers, IIRC.

Yea, yall beat us in 1983 when we were #1... and then again in 1986 when we were #2 and 20-0 and the #1 team had just lost the day before. If we had beaten yall that game we wouldve been #1 when the next poll came out.

Yep the game was at VaTech and Dana Kirk decided not to tell the team they were voted number one right before tip off. If they had known maybe Keith Lee, Derrick Philips, and Doom Haynes would have be inspired to compete a little more. Who know the Hokie's played very well at home that night. As I recall they were usually very competitive in the old Metro. Memphis, VaTech, Louisville, Florida State, Tulane South Carolina, Southern Miss, and Cincinnati: I always regret the breakup of that conference. Would be a P5 conference right now.

Still regarded as our 2 best players all time. Ace Custis, slightly post Metro, was an All American and had his Jersey retired but he went to play over seas. At least Dell and Bimbo played in the NBA for a while.

I'm not Big Jack but a :
Hokie - is part of our official cheer which goes something like

Hokie Hokie Hokie High
Tech Tech VPI
Solerex SolerI
Poly-tech Vir-gin-i-a

Not to be confused with a
Hokey - which is a castrated turkey

Which is not to be confused with
Hockey - which is a Canuckian sport with a puck.

OK. I started school in 1991 but definitely remember people still talking about beating y'all while you were #1.

Which reminds me... Do you ever bring back the 'Memphis State' Jersey's for your throw back uniforms? VT still uses the grey VPI uniforms occasionally.

If the 9 team ACC was a major conference with FSU then that certainly was too. I think you need a couple of more members from the Eastern independents. So 2 of: BC, Cuse, Penn State, WVU, Rutgers, Temple, Pittsburgh, or Miami.

They wear them from time to time. Wore them for the NIT tournament last year.
