Playing them in the middle of the week may well be the best for ratings. If it is, playing them in the middle of the week should not be ruled out, a priori.

Locking down NYD with the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls is the best net TV ratings grabs, everything else equal. But if the calendar doesn't make it workable, then swapping out the Orange bowl for another brand name bowl would be the first recourse, putting the Orange Bowl on the 2nd best spot in that schedule for attracting casual supports of the participating schools.

Lessee, I guess NYD was on Wednesday in 2019, so from fbschedules, if everything bumps up one week in the NFL, that puts the "New Week 18" Sunday at Jan 5th and the "New WC Weekend" at Saturday Jan 11 and Sunday Jan 12th, with the New Division Round Saturday Jan 18 and Sunday Jan 19th.

Now, one team playing in the SF with three more days rest than the other team is a lot more critical for the perceived legitimacy of the result than one semi-final winner having a single day's extra rest, so you flip one of the Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl to the Saturday after Christmas, flip one of the two exhibition bowls to the NYD time slot, and then working backwards:

NCG, SF winners - Thursday, Jan 16, +8/9 days
SF2 NYD winners - Wednesday, Jan 8, +7 days
SF1 pre-NYD winners - Tuesday, Jan 7, +10 days

Look man, that all works out in terms of the rest and perhaps TV won’t be badly impacted either. I simply think it is preposterous that most here think the travel and ticket sales is no big deal. This has literally been THE impediment to a 5-16 team playoff for decades. Presidents are not going to approve of something so demanding on their paying fans. While I think there is a path to incorporating the Bowls, it will be because most of the existing sites work from a logistical standpoint (Atlanta, NO, Dallas in particular). Besides that, SFs back on campus sites? If they can avoid a blizzard in B1G country perhaps. As far as TV, the exhibition (non-CFP) bowls will actually benefit by standing alone on NYD. Anyhow, I think I’ve added more than my two cents.

I think with on campus first round games and Quarterfinals NYD plus Saturday after Christmas or NYD, they've got the travel and ticket sales issues covered for the first two rounds, and think that because it is the 2020s rather than the 1990s, the travel and ticket sales aren't an issue for the Semi-finals and Championship game.

Over the last decade, the biggest impediment has been the impossibility of playing the quarterfinals in NYD bowls without the college playoffs extending so far into the NFL playoffs that they get swamped. They have successfully planted the NCG in the week in between the wild card weekend and divisional championship games, but (possibly with media partner advice) have not been willing to venture into the hype between the divisional championships and the conference championships.

Quote: Presidents are not going to approve of something so demanding on their paying fans.

What Presidents will focus on is complaints from the big boosters, and if the big boosters think that the 12 team playoff means a bigger chance their school will be in the championship playoff, I expect they will lean in favor.

There will of course be a range of views, but as long as there is a faction among the boosters who are loudly in favor of the 12 team playoff, then the President cannot be painted as ignoring the views of the boosters when they decide to not fight the move.

They will want to know the Semi-final locations in advance, since the big sponsors have to organize their events that are anchored by the tickets to the big game.

Yeah, I was talking about the media play that provides the largest net growth in audience ... some of the gross increase in audience in having the three biggest bowls be once again games with consequences for the national championship will be a transfer of audience from the lesser bowls ... but not all.
