RE: Conference USA skips out on hosting a traditional conference media day
So, just being clear, playing a Thursday home game Labor Day weekend like UAB already tries to do, and finally having a contract that forces the conference not to schedule UAB home games against the Iron Bowl for God's sake but instead on Black Friday on national TV, is gonna cause you to cancel season tickets? Because that's probably what you'd be looking at for most of those games.

I could easily see Protective being mostly full for mid-week games on national TV. You're only talking about 1-2 games a season. I think UAB would draw 10-20 percent higher in these games than the typical Saturday. This isn't true for every C-USA school, but I think it is proven true in Birmingham, Ala.

Only two games a season. So 33% of the home games on a night a lot of season ticket holder’s can’t attend or can’t bring their family to. Look at the MAC schedule they have teams go weeks without playing a Saturday game. I would not buy season tickets if I knew every year I’m going to miss multiple mid week games. I’ll just by game day tickets and there is no way in hell I’m paying extra for a tailgate spot if I know I can’t use it for multiple games.

THursday Labor day -- already happens.
Black Friday so not competing with Auburn/Alabama, a HOLIDAY ... Already should have been happening every other year. Period, the end. Never should even be a discussion. UAB should play home game on Black Friday, a Birmingham tradition, and it should be pounded through the conference's thick skull or forced by the TV partner.

Geeze. Not hard. There's UAB's two games and it didn't change a thing except put more butts in the seats.

I’ve watched Troy vs South Alabama on a Wednesday night. The year before they they played on a Tuesday night. That should be the best attended game of the year and instead it’s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Do you really think CUSA is going to get better time slots? In 2018 Northern Illinois played their last four regular season games on Thursday Wednesday Wednesday and Tuesday. Buffalo you n Tuesday Tuesday Wednesday Friday. Toledo Tuesday Wednesday Wednesday Thursday Friday.
2019 Toledo finished the season with Tuesday Wednesday Wednesday Friday. NIU Wednesday Wednesday Tuesday.

That’s what you are asking for

Then no one can really complain about the lack of exposure and the terrible impact that lack of exposure has on the conference profile and performance.

Fun Belt midweeks are a huge part of how the Sun Belt has improved its perception and on-field performance.

In C-USA, last I looked, hardly any of the teams draw well on Saturdays. Midweeks aren’t going to hurt much of it all. In UAB’s case, it is demonstrably proven, over decades, that UAB will draw better in those slots than on Saturdays. This isn’t even debatable. The numbers show it.

I don’t think that anyone will complain about playing on Black Friday or any other day that is adjacent to an “off” day or non school night.

RE: Conference USA skips out on hosting a traditional conference media day
Is UAB going to be playing AAMU or Alabama State to help draw on a Thursday? Is UAB going to be playing a ranked team on a Friday in the south which is ruled by high school football? If it isn’t a postseason game, folks don’t want to use off-days to make it to a game, especially folks coming in from out of town. Take our upcoming game in Montgomery on a Wednesday. It’s going to look like a poorly attended bowl game.

Some are already annoyed that the circumstances surrounding asymptomatic players cost us half the games we paid for last season. Now we are still paying for 6 homes games but only get 5 and the neutral site game isn’t included in the season ticket package. It also looks like we’ll have games cancelled again due to asymptomatic players, this season too.

15 years ago. We quit buying season tickets in basketball. Not solely due to the product but because games being held on Wednesdays forced us to choose between ball games and church. This year is the first time we’ve gotten them since then. Product is expected to be too good to pass up and we see the effort being put in from the man in charge.

A Wednesday night game vs Rice on ESPN 2 is not the same as Thursday night on ESPN vs Baylor or the 40,000 who showed up to see the Ruben Studdard halftime show.

I agree with blazeinbham. I’m not going to try and spin this into a good thing. We are going to be the only fbs conference not having in person media days. It’s pathetic, and it’s bush league.

No we are not. AAC is also doing all of their media day stuff online just like conference USA. Guess they are bush league also.

I agree with a Black Friday game against Southern Miss should be a tradition. That would be great attendance.

But the non-hardcore fan doesn't care about the other CUSA teams we play. There's a reason why when we play someone like UTEP that it is a low attended game. I can't imagine how attendance would be for a Thursday UTEP game; however, if we were to play Troy, USA, or even Georgia State, just someone close by, it would be decently attended - not great but not bad.

Besides Buffalo, the MAC are very close geographical conference. So they can easily drive mostly within the state or neighboring state for a weekday game.

Perhaps we are forgetting about the 1 billion dollar TV contract the AAC signed with ESPN who will do the promoting for them?

CUSA has nobody but itself and we continue to take days off.

It’s not comparable

Well I wasn’t aware of this. I also can’t see where this is being promoted or talked about anywhere. The Twitter handle for the AAC is quite active, and I’m guessing this is lost in the shuffle somewhere. But yeah, it’s bush league if they are doing it too.

I already miss that first Thursday most years, and it’s a bit annoying, but it’s typically our weakest opponent, so whatever.

Black Friday is not a great day for me either, but I suppose that would be better than a random weeknight.

If I’m buying season tickets and driving 90 minutes each way, I do expect to be able to make most of the games. If it gets to the point that a third of the home schedule is tough for me to get to, then you are damn right I’d cancel my tickets and buy individual games instead.

If we think playing mid week games will improve attendance, then I’ll settle for that outcome. I’m still not sold mid week games will do any more than we otherwise would.

It's not bush league. It's how every conference without its own TV network should be doing this. It's a waste of money unless you are churning out content for ESPN-owned conference network and have more than 100 media members who wish to attend.

CUSA Media Days are hardly ever promoted or talked about.....especially here in Birmingham. Again, I'm not understanding why people are upset about this.

what the heck are you talking about? Not even the SEC has that size of a tv contract.
And no one for ESPN is promoting this for them. Heck if you go to their board most of their fans didn't even know when or that it was gonna be digital this year.
Everything for the AAC will be done on ESPN+ also.

Exactly....its not like we have thousands of reporters beating down the door to go to it. We cant even get our own "beat writer" to travel to away games so i doubt he would have even went.

You guys are right, nobody pays attention, so f it. Why do it at all? It costs money to connect to the internet and use a computer for zoom meetings too. This thinking is why we are where we are today. As much as Louisville and ecu fans sucked, at least they wanted something better for their programs.

Do UAB or any C-USA fans even pay attention to media days? Or get autographs and picture taken with the coaches and players, etc.?

Did the AAC not sign a tv deal with ESPN in 2019 that would pay that league $83 million per year over a 12 yr span?

I’d love for our school to have extra money to put on its own tv broadcasts.
