You are confused. Joe Blow booster has $10,000 year to spend on some form of Memphis athletics. Previously, he would donate $10,000 to the school. Now he will donate $5,000 to the school and will sponsor/pay athletes $5,000. The net benefit to the school is now $5,000 and not $10,000.

I don’t think you are understanding the fact that this is the only opportunity Memphis has ever had to offer recruits something extra and not get punished for it. As it was, before the NIL, we were being left in the dust financially. No matter how much money our school raised it mattered not. The Dukes and Kentucky’s of the world would continue to get by with cheating and paying players while Memphis continued to get hammered anytime they had success that made the big dogs unhappy.

This combined with the transfer rules makes it easier for them to retain players and attract new players from other schools who cannot pay as much.

So you get a unheralded 3* develop him through a redshirt year and he is successful as a freshman...Are we going to be willing to match the $s.

Let's say our players are being paid $5,000 and a P5 school's players get paid $20,000. Before this, it had to be under the table, discreet and it wasn't legal. You could maybe do it every now and then but you couldn't do it across the board. Now it is legal. We can't make exceptions. We have to settle on an amount and pay everyone the same.

There is no way we can afford to pay the $20,000 and there is no way you can blame the player for leaving.

Great post and probably what will happen. When the players couldn't benefit there really wasn't a good argument to restrict and penalize movement. Now that they can, it makes perfect sense to allow schools to have the opportunity to get a semblance of ROI.
