You're going to be complaining until it starts benefiting Memphis. SMU already has plucked a 5* from p5 OU. The NIL will benefit all urban schools.

No, it wont, not anymore than any other schools. Boosters from land grant schools may not live in their small college towns but they still have very deep pockets and are willing to spend their money to support their schools. Just because someone moves from Oxford to Dallas does not mean they are going to start funding SMU instead of Ole Miss...

Isn't that right?

yeah I think it would be a clear improper inducement if you made it part of your recruiting pitch. But I'm sure there's no shortage of other ways to make sure a recruit understands what's available. Right now, since this is so new, the media are doing a good job.

Miami also isn't saying specifically that they won't pay star players and recruits more than the $6,000. This also doesn't include players doing individual deals. This also doesn't include deep pocketed boosters coming out of the woodwork and throwing boatloads of money at players.

Miami will draw from its $30 million payout from its tv contract and the $18 million or so in donations they receive every year. We make $8 million per year on our tv contract and do around $9 million per year in donations. Anyone who thinks this whole NIL thing is good for us is 01-wingedeagle

The way that I understand NIL, the University itself isn't allowed to pay the players that money. It has to come from an outside source. That's why the MMA company paid the players, not the University of Miami. That $30 + $18 million still goes to the school, unless boosters redirect their $18 million.

You’re 100% correct. The NIL money is not coming from the schools. People keep getting this confused. Also, the new NIL law allows schools like Memphis to have sponsorship of players…aka players that are paid. We all know the big P5 schools were already doing this and not being punished. See Duke and Zion Williamson. While G5 schools get scalded for any little infraction. See Memphis and James Wiseman. Now, the NCAA is no longer allowed to enforce its double standard, as Schools like Memphis and their sponsors can do exactly what the P5 schools have been allowed to do all along.

You are confused. Joe Blow booster has $10,000 year to spend on some form of Memphis athletics. Previously, he would donate $10,000 to the school. Now he will donate $5,000 to the school and will sponsor/pay athletes $5,000. The net benefit to the school is now $5,000 and not $10,000.

Quote:Schools like Memphis and their sponsors can do exactly what the P5 schools have been allowed to do all along.

40 schools have in excess of $100 million in revenues; and have boosters with tens of millions more money, who have only been held back by NCAA regulations from going crazy. Now they can spend as much money as they want.

We are at $55 million and squeezing every single dollar out of our fanbase to reach that amount. It's simple math and common sense, so don't worry about it.

But you said:
Stammer Wrote:Miami also isn't saying specifically that they won't pay star players and recruits more than the $6,000.
The University of Miami isn't paying its players. That money comes from outside. The companies/boosters may be withholding money that would have been a donation to the school, but that's not the same thing as the school directly paying them. If I decide to get gas at Exxon instead of BP, that doesn't mean that BP is paying Exxon for my gas.

Stammer Wrote:Miami will draw from its $30 million payout from its tv contract...
That $30 million TV contract goes to Miami, not the players. And we've already established that Miami is not directly paying the players.

Miami and every school is not getting all of the money anymore from boosters AND companies. Some of it is going directly to the players. Miami gets $30 million, we get $8 million. We are at a huge disadvantage.

It took 20 years for us to build a $10 million IPF. Our annual donations are in the $9 million range. There are at least 40 schools that have over $100 million in revenues. We are at $55 million. All of them can arrange to have each scholarship football and basketball player $50,000 per year and it won't even make a dent in their budgets.

Edit - unless Texas law prohibits it. Understand Texas passed a name image likeness law that went into effect July 1. Don't know what that says but I know Tennessee's does not go into effect until January 1 2022. That is, there's nothing to prohibit this in Tennessee at this time.

If SMU boosters still care about football and basketball there's certainly a lot of money there.

I think all those guys are dead. What was the main guys name? Sherwood Blount ?

SMU has a 2 billion dollar endowment. Surely SMU has some rich boosters who care about football. I mean they are located in Texas:-)

I just set up a marmalade company, a unicycle company and a fire hydrant company, all in the marketing/fund raising stages now. I think I would like to have student athletes from the University of Memphis represent our companies to help get our message out and build our brand. Any boosters who would like to invest in these start-ups are welcome. I would also like to help get new high profile athletes to Memphis so as to promote my companies even more. PM me with amounts and particular athletes you feel would best represent us and we'll do the rest.

Lime marmalade makes incredible margaritas and is not available in 95% of stores.

That will work perfectly fine. If the products are good, great; if not, nobody will care. 40 schools generate over $100 million of revenue; which is roughly twice the revenue that we generate. Miami is paying $6,000. For $5 million per year, the heavy hitters can arrange to have every scholarship football and basketball player paid $50,000 per year.

I get 100% the point that you are making. I don’t think you are understanding the fact that this is the only opportunity Memphis has ever had to offer recruits something extra and not get punished for it. As it was, before the NIL, we were being left in the dust financially. No matter how much money our school raised it mattered not. The Dukes and Kentucky’s of the world would continue to get by with cheating and paying players while Memphis continued to get hammered anytime they had success that made the big dogs unhappy.

The irony of YOU Captain Obviousing me is mind boggling. I can't lower it to a level you will understand, but I'll go as low as I can. Let's say your mother increases your allowance from $5/week to $10/week. In your head, in your tiny world where nobody else exists, you are thrilled because you have more money to spend. The only problem is that every other kid has their allowance increased from $25/week to $500/week. So you are happy that you can buy an extra rubber ducky every now and then, while the other kids can buy houses and cars. In your world, this is somehow good for us.

Can't do simple math or grasp simple concepts. Name calling and accusing me of name calling. Feelings hurted. So sad. At least you don't know the difference and you have an extra rubber ducky.

You keep bringing up these 40 schools like there’s about to be some big change in the balance of power. Those schools get the players they really want already in football. Now they can just funnel more money to the 5 stars and do it above board. The big boys, through their boosters’ business or shell companies, will go crazy trying to outbid one another for the blue chippers. They aren’t going to throw the same kind of bucks at the hundreds of 3 star guys that would be warming their benches, nor could they sign them all. Those are the players we’ll be able to pick up, just like today.

As for basketball, you’re talking about a smaller number of players so a school of Memphis’s resources can come up with the deals to pull in a few big names, especially if our boosters care more about basketball than your average “Power 40” school, which they do. How do you think we’ve been able to outfight those schools for top recruits up to now?

They signed a 5 star recruit and they are the conference poster child for renegade, lawless boosters, who are now all of a sudden...legal.

And SMU just got a commit from another highly-ranked recruit yesterday who was predicted to Oklahoma and TCU only. The second 95 + rated player to commit in the past 3 days.

SMU has a 2 billion dollar endowment. Surely SMU has some rich boosters who care about football. I mean they are located in Texas:-)

Another thread where we talk about SMU and football boosters? What's the obsession?

They signed a 5 star recruit and they are the conference poster child for renegade, lawless boosters, who are now all of a sudden...legal.

And SMU just got a commit from another highly-ranked recruit yesterday who was predicted to Oklahoma and TCU only. The second 95 + rated player to commit in the past 3 days.

Well, SMU has experience

If the products are good, great; if not, nobody will care. 40 schools generate over $100 million of revenue; which is roughly twice the revenue that we generate. Miami is paying $6,000. For $5 million per year, the heavy hitters can arrange to have every scholarship football and basketball player paid $50,000 per year.

While you are right...They can only sign so many.

This combined with the transfer rules makes it easier for them to retain players and attract new players from other schools who cannot pay as much.

So you get a unheralded 3* develop him through a redshirt year and he is successful as a freshman...Are we going to be willing to match the $s.

No $hit Sherlock captain obvious. Of course the P5 will still have more money. But at least we have a chance to play the money game now.

You think you say things and make points that are so genius. Most of the time I read what you have to say and think “captain obvious.” You disagree just to disagree. You build straw men arguments and tear them down with insults. You insult fellow Tiger fans, and great Tiger fans at that. You turn every thread you post in to a cesspool of insults and you are the most toxic person I have seen post on this board. Ever.

I mostly ignore you. And will continue to. Yet you still reply to my every post with your obsession.

Be careful, you may he banned again, Stammy. & I have a feeling the next time you get banned it’ll be for good. At least for this one of many profiles that you have. Loser.

We have miraculously been able to overcome the huge obstacles because the schools generating all of the revenue have to use a bit of discretion. So if the status quo is $100 million in revenue and $2 million in cheating, it is now going to probably be $5 million of perfectly legitimate payments to athletes. Boosters who were previously reigned in, can now legally pay players. Not only that, I would imagine that it will also be perfectly legal for boosters to throw parties for players and offer other inducements like trips and cars. The bottom line is that at least 40 schools have the revenue, and the booster network to do much more than they have shown up to now. We don't. The gap is wider now.

This is also very bad for us. In basketball, there are less players and you can presumably pay them more, but the imbalance between our basketball and football programs is a big problem. We undoubtedly have revenues and spend on a level of many P5 basketball programs, BUT it isn't a good look if you are paying basketball players $20,000 and football players $4,000. Perception and keeping up with the Joneses is important. Plus, there isn't any extra money, we don't have it.

The bottom line is beyond simple. Anything that allows more money to flow into NCAA athletics legally, is bad for us.

No. He's saying allowing more money to flow into the top programs will be bad for us. He's right about that part.
