Coaches, maybe not so much. They are mad because recruiting just got a whole lot more complicated. Administrators are mad because they are going to have to work much harder to find additional dollars for their new "employees." Life was much easier when the coaches could give $100 handshakes and the administrators could pretend like they knew nothing.

And, if I'm wrong (and Lord knows I'm wrong more often than not), I'd love to know why so many athletic admins and coaches are upset.

You know how much more difficult it is going to be to deal with college athletes when they have big money boosters giving them "endorsement" deals.

I don't have anything against anyone making good money, but if we truly wanted college athletics to be amateur you kinda have to tear down what we have and build anew, and in my opinion that includes coaching salaries.

I don't see how coaching or Admin salaries have anything to do with it.

Its like Mcdonalds employees complaining about what their manager makes.

I just hope Steve Ballard wants a few 5* big men from the ODU basketball team to endorse his construction company and lets recruits of that caliber know he his willing to pay handsomely for their services. IF they become Monarchs of course.

Why do we always have to tear things down. College sports worked for 100 years. The model works, they just have to adhere to it and also stand up to the kids. We don't need a new model at all. Just get back to basics and all will be well.

Why should the coaches and administrators be the only ones with any power over their own future?

The thing is college sports hasn't 'worked' for 100 years. The past few decades have seen this strain with big money and the 'student' part of student athlete. I think you're just wanting things to go back to the status quo, but the reason why we're here is that the status quo isn't tenable anymore and if we want a stable system going forward, it's going to have to be different than what it has been. I'm just saying if what we're really wanting going forward is the ideal of 'amateur' athletics, then we're gonna have to do a bit of a tear down.

Because the Athletes who brought this case to the courts said it was about $$. They thought it was unfair that coaches and schools and the NCAA got rich and benefited, while they couldn't sign autographs for 20 bucks apiece or sell a jersey on eBay.

College sports has not worked except for a few teams, conferences, and the NCAA for the last 30-40 years. The ODU's of the world have fought and clawed and are being left behind by a system that values an unfair, and inequitable system over true competition. Would it really be a bad thing if the playing field was leveled and Alabama didn't win the National Championship in football for a few year and perhaps App State did?

This will make the gap much worse, not better. Alabama can afford to pay their players hundreds of thousands if they want to. CUSA teams cant.

I 100% completely agree, we are going to get screwed in all of this. I am simply saying, if, college sports is interested in remaining an amateur sports organization the old system and the current solution is not going to work. They need to reinvent the wheel. In my opinion, the NFL just needs to suck it up and sponsor a minor league. Kids can sign out of HS or be drafted at the end of their college eligibility.

Why should the coaches and administrators be the only ones with any power over their own future?

I don't understand. The athletes totally have control over their future. They can make academics a priority and use the experience and education they gained for free to make a life for themselves, or they can leave one school and move to another, or they can opt out of the system altogether. Hell, they can even become coaches or admis if they want to. They are not being held hostage by anyone except maybe the pro leagues that prefer kids go to college. So college sports is the bad guy because pro sports put a system in place that makes it hard to skip college and still earn a living, all so that pro sports, and more importantly ESPN, can reap the benefits of brand building and training that are provided by college athletics. So who is really screwing these kids? Not the NCAA as long as the ensure that the promised education is provided, and certainly not the coaches and admins that are earning what the market commands.

But, just to play along with your argument that coaches and admins have some sort of privilege because they have the freedom to negotiate a contract and move onto another job whenever they want, let me ask you this. Would you be okay with student athletes signing a contract that commits them to 4 years at a school, and if they choose to leave then they are required to pay a buyout in order to play at another school or go to the NBA, because that is what the real world for coaches and admins is.

The status quo is tenable, the college presidents just lack the integrity to ensure great education and the balls to tell the kids they are wrong and can move along if they don't like the system.

I would be fine with that, assuming scholarships were also guaranteed for 4-years. As it is now, scholarships are renewable on an annual basis and the majority of transfers are leaving because they were told by the coaches their scholarships wouldn’t be renewed.

All because a FREE education isnt enough.

Welcome to Entitled America.

Are you going to college for Academics or Athletics? Scrap all college sports for ***** sake and make it about nothing more than higher education.

IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE, THEYRE GOING TO WANT A GLASS OF MILK.

**** all these so called "Student Athletes".

Mod Edit; don’t bypass the profanity filter.

I'm pretty firmly in the camp of "pay for play" would ruin college sports but NIL? I don't get the outrage. If you're a music student on scholarship you can give music lessons to make money. Athletes had to jump through hoops and notify the schools compliance office just to flip burgers. The NCAA's leash was too tight. Same with the SCOTUS' ruling on educational benefits. Neither of these effect the game or the amateurism of college sports. Will some college athletes be so famous that they are getting paid to be in commercials? Yep. Will it be abused by boosters? Yep. Was similar stuff happening before? Yep. At least now the one's that run afoul of the rules in minor ways won't have the book thrown at them while Reggie Bush is handed suitcases full of money.

Go watch Division 3. Virginia Wesleyan and CNU are right down the road. No athletic scholarships. But also no eight-to-nine figure stadiums with seatbacks and luxury suites, no coaches making more money than everyone else at the school, no media deals, almost no merchandising or televised games. Just you and your ass in a bleacher with maybe 1,000 of your closest friends.

If you're OK with that, good for you. But most of the complainers are unrepently in the "capitalism for me, amateurism for thee" camp.

I will say that the fact that you consider student-athletes mice and not integral parts of your college sports experience as a supporter speaks volumes.

Just in case anyone is confused about my stance, let me be clear: I'm totally ok with the recent developments. My beef is with the athletic administrators and coaches who are complaining. While I do think we have lost some of what was good about college sports, I don't blame the players one bit and I'm totally ok with them fighting for a cut.

Im OK with them legitimately getting a cut from honest work at market wages. But we all know this is going to turn into millionaire donors "hiring" players for huge money to do basically nothing. Even the pro's figured out they needed salary caps and drafts to keep things from getting out of control and too lopsided. I had much less of an issue with the COA salaries. At least that was somewhat even within a couple thousand dollars for every player on every team. Now, if you have enough rich alumni with disposable income, you can simply buy the services of the players you want. I see bidding wars at the recruiting phase coming up soon. There needs to be a legit minor league for all of these players to go and get paid if thats all they want to do. Stop all this mess in college right now. Then they can have a choice... go minor league pro, or go to college. Weigh the pros and cons of each. Similar to baseball.
