RE: 7/1/21 - Texas4 Entry into WAC
SammyH -

The ASUN would’ve have a few things going against it

1) Ridiculous travel. At least in WAC, half the league is in our state and drivable by bus. Without the Texas schools, none of those are bus schools. Central Arkansas but whom else? I am not convinced they would have brought more than SFA and Sam

2) Money is made in hoops. WAC is a better hoops league. No questions there

3) Are those ASUN like minded institutions and in places Sam was recruiting? Unless the ASUN was instituting a Texas division with similar setup as WAC, it wouldn’t of flown. The WAC also has a bit more name recognition regardless of how far away it was from the good ole days

Honestly, your opinion is not forward thinking and not aligned with the vision for the place. Guessing you attended during the status quo days for the school before Gaertner and Hoyt dug the school out of just the same old. Times are changing and the school is not a 9k institution. We are going to be 30k strong before long if you include the Montgomery Co campus, which pays into student athletic fees. Get on the bus are you going to miss the ride. Same thing happened to those businesses, organizations that refused to change during COVID. Others adjusted and improved. The Southland was stuck in neutral with no ambitions for greater things. That Ok for you? Houston Baptist is calling

UCA is a consistent Top 10 team and has made the playoffs three times in the past five years. Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls have been good sustainably over the past 5 years. McNeese State is a historic program that holds high standing the subdivision. Incarnate Word has a conference title recently and is an up and coming program.

Instead of that we’re playing Big Lie flunkies and D2 move ups.

Better not see any complaining from Sam fans when the playoff committee won’t give us home games! Our schedule is going to stink.

Yes, it was such a GOOD Conference that the Texas 4 plus UCA was tired carrying all the weight of the dead beats. UCA is thrilled to be shed of the SLC. UIW and Houston Baptist football facilities wouldn’t even be considered GOOD for 4A High Schools. Neither program could draw flies with dead carcasses even in large metro areas. Neither program will be any different a decade from now. There is a reason the WAC snubbed UIW.

Oh yes D2 Flunkie trashed SFA in Nacogdoches.

And, Lousiana schools can’t even afford to repair main campus buildings much less enhance their Athletics. I knew a Nicholls Athlete and she told me that have to be pimped out a couple times a month for fundraising. She transferred. Football facilities are atrocious.

You are very short sighted if you believe this conference was going to be viable moving forward.
I never called Tarleton a “D2 Flunkie”. If you’re transitioning to D1, you’re not exactly a “D2 Flunkie”. I do have to ask though, is there something in the trophy case up at TSU commemorating that win over SFA? I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bunch brag about a win over SFA as I have from Tarleton fans. That program has won 14 conference games in the last five years. What’s next, an “Almost beat McNeese in 2021” plaque?

I get it, the LA schools don’t spend much. But maybe Nicholls isn’t the best example to use, considering they’re in the midst of building an $8 million end zone complex.

You can say whatever you want about the Louisiana schools. But you still won’t convince me and others in the SHSU fanbase that replacing longtime rivals and similar institutions for a hodgepodge group of Western schools is a good thing. And you definitely won’t convince me that the WAC is a better option than the ASUN, who had interest in the Texas 4. And don’t even start with the WAC/FBS talk, because that’s not happening any time soon.

Yeah, but under the currently FBS bylaws, it will NEVER happen being part of the ASUN. The only route into the FBS runs though the WAC or the other G5 conferences. A move to the ASUN from the Southland would be strictly a lateral football move.
It absolutely could happen. If the Sun Belt or CUSA needed to add a school, they could invite SHSU, or any WAC/ASUN program for that matter, to join the FBS. So the WAC isn’t the only way to FBS play, although they’re certainly trying to make it seem as if it’s the quickest way. The problem? None of these schools (Sam included) are even CLOSE to FBS ready and shouldn’t even be running these feasibility studies. I don’t exactly know how the “FBS Golden Ticket” works, but if I were the other G5 conferences I’d want no part of the WAC as a whole in the FBS.

SHSU is an FCS school with FCS facilities in an FCS town with an FCS level fanbase. There’s a good chance things will change within the next 10-15 years but right now we’re not ready to go FBS, and in all likelihood won’t be ready for another a decade plus. No offense, but I don’t want to be the next NMSU or Idaho or ULM, in an impossible arms race with subpar facilities and zero chance of winning anything.

The ASUN would’ve been a step up competition wise at the FCS level, so it wouldn’t be a “lateral move” from the Southland. It would’ve been a nice step up in the level that best suits SHSU (for right now). FBS is cool, makes more money for sure and brings in a bit more attention on the local level. But I’m of the opinion that we should cross that bridge when we get there, because the feasibility test will say the same thing it said in 2007: facilities need improvement and attendance isn’t quite good enough.

You absolutely do the feasibility studies! The studies will tell each school where they need to be financially to be FBS. The answers become the formation of the instructional goals if they want to become FBS. They can also tell you FBS isn’t possible so the institutional goals can be modified to match.

Sammy, I will say this,

in 2002, Southwest Texas State was an FCS school in an FCS town. They had no division 1 success, they had 20k students, less than $10m budget and a 15k stadium that wasn't filled.

Three years later (2005), they had a new president and AD, a name change, and winning football team. It changed the culture and pushed the fanbase to call fo FBS. They made a stated goal and started getting their ducks in row. If not for the FBS moratorium, I think they would have moved up sooner.

By 2012 (only 10 years), they had 35k students, a freshly expanded 30k stadium, a healthy athletic fee (25m). They beat University of Houston and played host to a Big XII team in San Marcos. Media coverage improved. Everything is better except the performance on the field.

If you go to the SBC board you'll find similar stories from App, Coastal, and GA Southern except their teams are winning.

Sam Houston won't be Texas A&M. You won't have 100k in the stands, but you could be Coastal Carolina (hosting College Gameday) or Northern Illinois (NY6 bowl) Both teams with smaller stadiums under 20k and national recognition. With a stated goal of FBS, they can get new people to open the checkbook.

Naturally your fans would rather see a D2 school than a program with a fair amount of success at the FCS level considering their short time here! Nobody likes to see their team lose. This of course has nothing to do with the fact that Tarleton State is a closer and larger school with much more history against ACU.

UIW is what we were told ACU would become when The Bible 3 joined the Southland. Maybe if the Wildcats didn’t blow every year this new football conference would look a bit better.

And I’ve HONESTLY never trolled!

So, Boy Wonder what was so great about the Southland Conference that makes you so disheartened about the WAC?

You mentioned Tarleton and Dixie Tech or whatever their new name is. Hmmm both rapidly growing schools vs Nichols, UNO, UIW, HBU, NWern St SE La TAMUCC and Mcneese.

Please explain to me how this arrangement WAS SO GREAT!!!!
If you truly believe this was a better situation you need serious counseling for your state of mental health.

Nicholls doesn't even have 6000 undergrads today that had more students 15 years ago. Are you still not getting the picture here?

I'll save my wall space for a plaque when we take down the KitKats. Its coming.

My guess is THOSE PESKY HODGEPODGE SCHOOLS were just more attractive to those at your University who make the decisions other than someone like yourself who enjoys Louisiana venues. Could it be the Hodgepodge schools have something your Louisiana schools don't?

FBS is long term in my honest opinion and I do not think is beyond the grasp of the WAC. I thinking a decade at the earliest. So, I'm not hyping it up but I'm also not Debbie Downer for those who are a little tipsy on the idea at the present.

Our basketball team averaged 944 fans in the last non COVID year... everyone is going to miss the ride.

We have a national championship level football team that has been consistently good for a decade. Yet we can’t draw more than 10,000 fans once or twice a year. We might have 22k students now, but our athletic dept. acts like we’re still in 2005. And you want to talk FBS?

Wait... TexasTerror? The same TexasTerror that used to dump all over Texas State-SM on anygivensaturday when they were doing something very similar to this over a decade ago? The same TexasTerror that mocked their high student athletic fees? The same TexasTerror that laughed at them fudging up attendance numbers to meet requirements? The same TexasTerror that joked about all of those attempts to leave 1-AA when they clearly weren’t ready? The same TexasTerror that said the WAC was desperate? Nah... that’d be too ironic. Anyways, where is that $60 million east side Bowers renovation? Where’s the track removal? Where’s the track and field stadium in the north lot that was planned? Why isn’t our athletic department always thinking forward? Because CLEARLY this “forward thinking” only happened when making this isolated decision.

At the end of the day, we both want what’s best for Sam Houston State. But if your idea of forward thinking is joining a conference in hopes that they use an ancient “grandfather clause” to elevate our football program whilst we send our Olympic sports teams to Seattle and California Baptist, I’m sorry I’m just not on board. This is going to hinder us in the long run, you’ll see. This isn’t forward thinking, this is overthinking. We don’t need the WAC to go FBS.

Hoyt sucked by the way.

Big Lie Flunkie-Southern Utah. They flunked out of the Big Sky. This really isn’t hard. I wouldn’t have the word “AND” in between the two different entities otherwise.

None of these schools are FBS ready. I’m not a downer, I’m grounded in reality. Sam could’ve built up their program to an FBS level in the Southland or the ASUN, two conferences that are better at FCS football. This move is utterly pointless if the grandfather clause fails.

FBS is long term in my honest opinion and I do not think is beyond the grasp of the WAC. I thinking a decade at the earliest. So, I'm not hyping it up but I'm also not Debbie Downer for those who are a little tipsy on the idea at the present.

Sammy, we get it. You think this is a bad move. It’s obvious no one here, Sam fans or not, will change your mind. Fortunately or unfortunately whether you like it or not, this is where we are, this is where our programs will be for the foreseeable future. But man, respectfully, if you have zero interest in engaging in meaningful discussion please go to the trash talk forums, where you will be free to egg on opposing fans to your hearts content. No good will come from crapping on new conference mates especially when we’ve only been in this conference for 5 minutes.

Many of us are optimistic about the future of both Bearkat Athletics and the WAC. It really is fine if you are not.

Instead of that we’re playing Big Lie flunkies and D2 move ups. Straight from your keyboard to our message board.

So, if Tarleton and Dixie (future name to come) are not your Flunkies then whom where you referring to?

Nicholls doesn't even have 6000 undergrads today that had more students 15 years ago. Are you still not getting the picture here?

This says “Texas4 Entry into WAC” I’m a Texas4 fan, so I’m going to keep voicing my opinion on this new conference. You guys keep replying to me. Is that not “meaningful conversation”?

You’re right, this is where we’ll be for the foreseeable future. And it’s damn unfortunate. You guys got to **** on and talk about leaving the Southland for all those years. Is trashing our conference not acceptable all of a sudden?

Meaningful? No. It’s a temper tantrum. Kind of like what happens when my two year old is told she can’t eat cake for dinner. She throws a fit. And still gets no cake. You can keep crapping on the WAC, and we will still be members. And trust me, there’s plenty of people in and out of this conference that are more than capable of doing so. I’m sure you can find a place to add to the echo chamber. Now if you want to discuss how we can improve the WAC’s FCS performance in coming seasons or discuss what the addition of the new members will mean for the upcoming season(s) or maybe even talk about the new WACxASUN challenge, sense you are pro ASUN, I’m sure that will be interesting.

(07-05-2021 09:37 PM)SammyH Wrote:  Our basketball team averaged 944 fans in the last non COVID year... everyone is going to miss the ride.

I have never said going FBS is absolute.

I am a proponent of doing the feasibility study as a conference and exploring what we can about getting better. I am also under the impression that the NCAA infrastructure is going to change in a way that will shake football as we know it and have always wanted Sam Houston to remain in whatever becomes the second tier.

Yes, I criticized the folks in San Marcos but our university is in much the same position they were in (our enrollment has doubled since then!) and the biggest issue we faced - staying in the Southland was not a good situation.

It took our institutions leaving for the Southland to even mandate that their schools do ESPN level broadcasts for sports offerings (all exiting schools were already there and only SeLA was doing similar of remaining schools). The quality of football had deteriorated and basketball reached all time lows. The league had outgrown itself and not for the best. SFA, Sam and ACU were carrying the league. While Sam has a to do list, the facilities around the league have not seen upgrades minus McNeese hoops.

You can beat the ASUN being a better spot but aren’t you complaining about Olympic sports to Seattle and Cal Baptist? Dude, that’s not even true. Only basketball is playing intradivisional schedules. The ASUN unless it created a similar Texas division would’ve needed our Olympic sports traveling on flights regularly. In the WAC, soccer only hits a plane once (pending tourney site), volleyball twice tops (pending crossover and tourney site) and softball/baseball once (pending tournament spot). Can you say the same about the ASUN? Gumbart is something else but can’t imagine a full out Texas division like we find ourselves in now.

Time to do something different.
Time to improve our worth.
Time to take a bit of a risk.
It was damn time to leave the Southland.

And PS… Hoyt was great. Enrollment went up. Investment in campus growth. The addition of a medical school, lots of improvements in the arts and yes, she even invested in athletics (KC Keeler hire and $$$ involved was not the same old Whitten era $$$)

App State had its fair share of Anti-FBS alumni. The last year of FCS, when the coaches red shirted the entire team, was an asskicking. That crowd was loud and daunting. The first half of thr first year of FBS was brutal. The anti-FBS crowd hit their peak and **** seemed to be going sideways. Then things started clicking. There are no more Anti-FBS App State fans. We've been FBS for 7 years now.

People will come around.

Will the feasibility studies be honest?

Of course, since Boise State (given I lived there when most of their moving happened) is kind of the ultimate social climbing model in this century to date, I know who they stepped on along the way. Just saying I wouldn’t be surprised to see that again. Eh, not much would surprise me with what the WAC has done, for better or worse, probably both.

Oh, I see the lecturers have moved on to you now. "Right think" is the only way anyone is allowed to think or you'll catch their toothless wrath03-puke Or even worse, their long boring replies03-lmfao

If the WAC is for better or for worse for your whatever school you're from, it will not be long enough of a long stay to matter much. Time is already tick tick ticking on this shotgun marriage. It was a joke from day one and has become more ridiculous the more time goes on. I've never seen an arrangement more destined to end in failure.
