It is my understanding the Coach Bragga is running the camps per a participant and some of the players helping with the camp. Seems a little odd but that is what I heard.

Probably his last deal at Rice. He did all of the lead up work, so probably gets to make the money off the camps.

Hopefully some, if not all, of the money goes to the Volunteer Coach which is his sole means of income due to asinine NCAA rules or lack of approved 3rd assistant!! I'll not go down that tangent here!!!!

That's the way these deals are set up.

I've heard we have 2 -3 big name transfers close to being locked up. Fingers crossed.

Any idea when we will get some word about this?

Your guess is as good as mine. All I've heard from a couple inside sources is that we're close.

BTW, virtually the entire Arizona team has entered the transfer portal after their coach, Jay Johnson, was hired by LSU....and several have already transferred to LSU.

actually a very good call. That and big time football in Baton Rouge are the 2 biggest differences I can identify.

I’d add the food in Baton Rouge will be a pleasant surprise for them, but they will miss the scenic beauty of Tucson.

what is the rule on transfers and sitting out a year? I know that doesn't apply for JUCO's, but have they done away with the sit a year if you transfer rule? I thought that just applied during the COVID year, but that appears to be wrong.

Looking at next year's roster, what do we need most (plenty of shopping required for a team that did not make their own conference championship). I feel like we had some freshman coming along as hitters at the end of the year.

I have never been partial to mosquitos; just not enough meat to make it worthwhile, although I am sure with the right Cajun seasoning, they would be quite a treat.

All sports are immediate transfers for 2021-22. I had a parent of a college swimmer tell me the other day (she's going into her senior year) that the rumors are already swirling that they may extend an extra year of eligibility to the 2022-23 school-year as well, but I hope not. First off, that would mean we're still dealing with a lot of crap in this country, but secondly I just think the NCAA can't let athletes compete forever. It's rather unfair to current high school athletes because some of them aren't being offered scholarships because existing college athletes are holding up roster spots while they come back for a 5th or 6th year of competition.

Transfers are now immediate across the board (all sports). We obviously need the most help on the pitching staff, though I'm anxious to see what effect our new pitching coach and his analytic approach have on our numerous young pitchers. We also have added the JUCO pitcher of the year (Burbank). Despite the losses of our three best hitters this past season (Comeaux, Edwards, Gneiting), I think the offense should be fine-- what with Jose has hitting coach and the return of a very solid core in Garibay, Becker, Walsh and Bulman (along with SS Hughes and Antonio Cruz, who I believe was underutilized under Bragga and who has historically killed left-handed pitching). I'm guessing the incoming Freshman catcher (from the Banditos traveling squad) will take over catching duties from Long.

Yes, that is a great point, with crops of HS players coming up from the bottom every year. I assume they aren't increasing the number of scholarships, so money is going to get tight for schools that do not cut bait with 4 year athletes.

BTW, does anyone know the status of Roel Garcia? He still has another year of eligibility, and with another year of conditioning and working with Bostick, it's conceivable he could regain his former stuff. (Last year his fastball was down 3-5 MPH in velocity from his pre-TJS level.)

does he have enough skill and potential to be MLB draft-able with a better fastball and training?

Pre-TJS definitely. Pre injury he had elite stuff, and simply had to work on his control. He did not appear to be fully healthy last year. Missed a couple starts with arm soreness. Never got his velocity up. Also, he would almost predictably hit the wall after 3 - 4 innings.

It would be a real boost to our selling points if our current pitching coach could turn him around(not to mention making the team better).

Probably depends on whether or not he wants to be at Rice for a 6th year vs. any kind of MLB draft status… 24 y/o’s aren’t going to get drafted high even if with a great season.

Scenic beauty - Tucson wins in as landslide ... unless you really like pine trees, bayous and swamps, and petrochemical plant skylines
